We were unable to get our satelite to connect to Directv at FW last weekend. Has anyone stayed in a site that had a clear view of the southern sky so their satelite would connect? If so, what site?

Thanks.

I got a signal in the 1900 loop last year. I carry two 50' cables and a signal strength meter to help in setup. You just need to find that little opening in the trees....

I have had very little problems at any site getting it to work. We have our dish on the top of the coach and a portable one as well. If one doesn't work, the other one does.

We tried to set ours up yesterday with no luck. Now this is the first time we have tried to use the portable dish (don't have one on RV) and we couldn't get it to work at all. Not sure if we are doing something wrong, too many trees or there is a problem with our equipment. Any suggestions??

We don't have a separate signal meter so we were just going by what was on the screen for signal strength. We finally just gave up and put it away. Since we are here for an extended stay, it would have been nice to use our DirecTV. Maybe I'll call DirecTV and see if they will suspend our service - kinda hate to keep paying for it while we are here if we can't use it. Not sure if they will do this since we just starting using DirecTV a few months ago.

We are planning a trip in March. Only openings currently are premium sites and full hook up. We booked the premium ($215 more) just to have cable. Husband was just asking this morning if Direct TV can be used. Seems if we switch to full hook up it will be a hit or miss depending on location.
Are the sites in premium that much better or is it just about the distance to walk and such?

We use a compass, works every time. (Although once we did have to borrow Stacktester's signal tester, but only once)

215 dollars is a lot to pay for the convenience of a premium site. I would rather put that money somewhere else in my trip, but that is just me.

Thanks Jen. We used a compass but still had no luck getting a signal.

Yeah, I would never pay the additional money for a premium site either. Of course when I called to get reservations for next winter I was able to get a premium site with a AAA discount for the same price as a full hookup. However, it was only available for half of the trip so we stuck with full hookup.

In the end the answer is.......It will pick up in some sites, and will NOT in others. Been there, done that.

Ditto!

We started out in the 90's with Dish Network, but could never get a signal at FtW, and had trouble at home with no trees anywhere near the dish. We switched to Direct and have had no trouble picking up a signal anywhere.

Oh yeah...we also use a signal tester & compass. We've been in many sites at FtW and have never had a problem. Are you using the correct zip code? You have to program it in with the zip. That may be where you're going wrong. The zip for FtW is 32830.

Deb - That's the zip code we entered. Next time we head into town we are going to get a signal tester. Guess the best place to purchase one would be Camper World??

Double and triple check your connections. I once couldn't get a signal....come to find out the center wire on the coax cable was broken.

I would use a vcr or dvd player and try to send the signal all the way down the line from where it connects to the sat dish to the sat receiver.

Also, I would make sure that you have the sat in/sat out/ ant connections are correct on the receiver. It would be the first time I did that one:sad2:

Same here, but way back when the Fort was really wooded on overgrown it could be a chore and if windy and the tall pines were moving it would cut in and out since the window to site the satellite was so small.

Hey check your PMs and watch out the calvery might run you down.:lmao:

Larry

That would be cavalry.

Jim,
Doesn't matter how you spell it, Larry was great. He came to our site and helped us out with our DirecTV. Guess he symbolizes what a true camper is - willing to help out a fellow camper.

Larry, thanks again. We really appreciate the help.

Well the calvery showed up and the cable is good, but the horse died so never got it sighted:lmao: . I can see how not having a signal strength meter could make it near impossible. My dish head has an LED that blinks faster the stronger the signal that makes it a snap it at least find the satellite.

P.S. I can't spell worth a hoot, but now don't care. I even got the red lines, but am too lazy to look it up or even to use spell check and it appears everyone knew what I meant and that's what's really important.
