DirecTV Customer Service Nonsense (UPDATE post #28)

Well, we are giving Hulu a try.

We bought a Roku stick yesterday and got a 7-day free trial with Hulu so started that last night.

We are getting the channels we watch most on DirecTV plus locals. If we continue the service it will be $44.99/month. Way less expensive than $151 each month that we are paying for DirecTV.

DH finally got a bit of a refund from DirecTV, or rather AT&T, of $25 off our next bill and another $10 off the next one. Probably won’t wait around for that second one as I imagine we will be cutting the cord with DirecTV within a few days.

So far the internet seems to be handling the streaming and both of us on our iPads at the same time. DH works from home a lot on the computer so he is anxious to see how it goes with him working, the Hulu and me on my iPad at the same time. Time will tell.
will you let us know how it goes after a couple of weeks? i am also curious if our internet can handle so much. also if you are pleased with channel selection

Ok dumb question for sure for some of you but if I was to "stream" TV shows, channels or whatever can I still watch shows on my TV set while I'm comfortably snuggled up under a blanket on my loveseat or would I have to got sit at my computer desk and watch shows there?
Kitty, we have wireless internet and stream TV and movies just fine on our TV in the family room.

I read this thread with a great deal of interest as we have been kicking around the idea of switching from DirecTV. Got no problem with their service, love my channel line up , have been a customer for about 19 years HOWEVER, the outfit we have our internet provided thru can give up faster internet (from 100 to 250, although truth be told we have no issues with the speed we have now and don't need anything different) and give up exactly the channel lineup we have now plus sports channels and HBO & Showtime for $88 cheaper per month.
Honestly when I took a moment to add up my internet & DirecTV bills I was shocked - I now it sounds dumb, but I lost track over the past few years with everything else.
So I called DirecTV and got their spiel on what they could do with customer service person #1, they couldn't/wouldn't meet the new price which I was fine with - just asked to talk to someone to start the cancel process & find out about what to do with the equipment & that kinda thing. So they transferred me to someone who "might be able to offer me a better option to stay than they could".:rolleyes2
I was then transferred to the wrong department. That person offered to transfer me to the correct department to see if there were any more "loyalty offers" and chat me up about my husbands favorite football team.
Like I care....so I'm now engaged in a fake laugh - off.

In the end the only thing they could offer was $20 off and free NHL ticket this year.

Once I got thru that and made it clear that that wouldn't cut it, I did finally get the info I really wanted- what to do with my current DirecTV equipment. They (happily I might add) instructed me on what would happen and how it works and even told me the best two days of the month to call to cancel (in terms of my billing cycle) when I had scheduled the new service and called back to formally cancel DirecTV.

Just thought I'd post this in case it's helpful to anyone else.

Do you get ESPN2 and can you pause, rewind and record? Those are musts.

I think it depends on who answers the phone when you call. When my mom lost CBS over the summer she called and ended up speaking to a really sweet representative who gave her a one time credit of $75, $25 off per month for one year and new equipment. When she was inadvertently billed for the new equipment she called and they waived her entire bill for the month. The flip side of that was her friend who called the same day and only got a one time bill credit of $10. The next month some of the credits he was getting expired and his bill went way up. When he called to discuss his options the representative actually yelled at him, telling him that he got all the discounts he was going to get. He switched to Spectrum. Now in our area there is a dispute with ABC which may soon stop airing on Direct. I personally have Dish and have a great rate. Only issue I have had was when the CW was off air for a couple of months.

When they offered me the one time $10 credit I said just send me the boxes to return equipment. Then I got the loyalty dept. They offered me NFL Sunday ticket and $20 off for 12 months. You have to tell them you want to cancel to get any deal

What did you have to do with your DirecTV equipment when you cancelled the service?

They will send me a ups label and some boxes to send everything back.

DH just called to cancel our DirecTV this morning. They said he will get an e-mail telling us where to take the equipment. That place will box it up and mail it back to them.
