Dinner time, where do you fill your plate?

We are always watching our weight and find that serving from the stove is easier for portion control... we serve up the correct portions and immediately put the rest away. When we go to my parents house, someone over there is always dieting too so my dad just serves up portions from the stove. At my inlaws, they serve from the table (which is 2 steps from the stove anyway!) We always eat more at my inlaws than at my parents.

During dinner, do you fix your families plates from the stove, or do you have serving dishes on the table and everyone takes what they want? We do it both ways, but I think I want to change that. How do you do dinner?

we only serve from the stove if it is a late dinner and we are really hungry. Usually at the dinner table tho

I usually put out the serving dishes, but on occasions if I'm really tired & just want to get dinner going, I'll put the pot of mashed potatos on the table & everyone helps themselves.

Last night I made Bratwurst, homemade french fries & fresh spinach sauteed in olive oil & garlic. I put the potatos & spinach in a serving dish, but the sausage, I re-heated it in a pie tin & I just put the tin on the table!

I have a dishwasher also & that's why I pull out serving dishes. Also, my DH helps me clear the table after dinner (I've given up getting my DS8 to help me do that!)

Same here. I think part of it might be the way you were brought up. My mother would never serve from the stove, it just wasn't her way. That's the way I grew up so now I do the same.

My dh actually prefers me to dish his plate (?) and I do the kids too - so from the stove. If we have company it's definately from the table. I do plan on switching in a year or so because the kids are getting older.

My mom served from dishes on the table. Even if we ate ice cream, we all dished our own. My Dad would hate having Mom dish his plate. It was a shocker to me when I married dh and he prefered me to portion out his food - it seems really odd to me that I get to decide how much he eats. I have to admit it is easier at times!

most often from the pots on the stove, if not and it is just family at home we put the pots right on the table and serve from there.

If we have company we always us serving plates and bowls.

I try to get the family to sit at the table as often as possible. Most of the time we put the pots on the table and everyone serves themselves.

I was brought up with serving bowls on the table...I always did that, until a year or so ago. On the rare occasions I do cook, we've been helping ourselves from the pots on the stove.

We always serve from the stove unless we have company. I have always felt a little guilty about it, since I was so sure that everyone else served everything in serving dishes. Now I don't feel so bad!

I do it from the stove as well...

When I was growing up my mom would would line everyones plate up on the counter and my dad woud do the meat on each plate, usually because he cut it and my mom would portion out everything else onto the plates! As we got older she started using serving dishes.... we would stare at our plates being empty until she put the food in on our plates... ! :)

More time than not its from serving bowls or pans direct on the table. Very rarely from the stove. Got this from my mom. And I almost always try to sit at the dinner table and not in front of the TV even though its just the 2 of us.

usually serve yourself from the table
sometimes its a combo of both
like when we have something easy like baked potato and steak put those on plates and let everyone help themselves to salad at the table etc.

hot casserole dishes I tend to serve from the stove top
two kids and a dish from the oven on the table don't mix

from the stove. Me and Mom is not home at the same time. Usually you eat dinner from the TV because no one is home to eat with.

When there is no company, i tend to put the pots on hotpans on the table and serve directly from them. With guests, I do the serving bowl stuff. for me the main reason is it keeps the food warmer if we want seconds.
