I was just wondering what size dinner plates is everyone using? 8.5 inches, 10.75 inches or other.

It depends on what plateware you have, and when it was produced. I found this interesting:

The modern dinner plate measures between 10 and 11 inches in diameter. The dinner plate is used more frequently than any other plate, holding the main course for each meal, no matter how formal.

The modern dinner plate reflects an increase in size by approximately 23 percent since 1900, when the average dinner plate measured a little over 9 inches in diameter. The increased size in dinner plates has led to larger portion sizes, which is a contributing factor to the obesity epidemic affecting many in the West. Even a plate size from the 1950s, when the average diameter was just under 10 inches, would reflect a healthy change over the larger plates of today.

and this:

bread & butter plate: 4-5”

salad plate: 7-7.5”

luncheon plate: 8-8.5”

european dinner plate: 9.5”

us dinner plate: 10.5”

charger (underplate and/or place-setting “show” plate): 12”

I use my lunch plates mostly for eating. Except for Christmas and Thanksgiving, then I bring out the bigger dinner plates.

Totally depends on what we are eating, but for a full dinner (like roast beef with the fixins) my wife and I use 9 inch plates and my boys use 11.5 inch plates. We bought bigger plates for my boys. They are much larger human beings than my wife and I.

Just measured my plates (bought from Ikea last year). They are 11 inches in diameter. Part of that is an elevated rim that you would not put food up on anyway, but the plate as a whole, does seem big. If I'm eating a meat with two sides, I'll use those. If I'm having something like a stir fry, a casserole, etc, then I use the matching shallow bowls instead.

Everyday dinner plates are 12".....bigger than any others I have had. Had to put them in a lower cabinet because the upper doors didn't close.
Salad plate is 9"
Fine china from the '40s is 10"

Back in the day one of our son's literally did eat his cereal out of a mixer bowl!! :teeth:

US luncheon plates for dinner in general and bread plates for lunch and breakfast. Snack plates are tapas bowls that hold about 2 or 3 ozs. Our lifestyle has become more sedentary since the shut down started so this suits this household's current need.

Had to measure mine, they are 11 inches. Standard Target dinner plates, or so I thought. When we remodeled our kitchen they barely fit in the new cabinets. The designed looked at our plates and said they were big, but we pointed out that our new custom cabinets were actually shallower by about 1/2 inch that the cheap contractor grade particle board cabinets they replaced.

Mine are 10 inches. The salad plates are 8.5 and it would feel weird to just set the table with those. We do use those for breakfast, lunch, or whenever we're not eating at the table though.

I often use the salad plate, but my family uses the lunch plates. I have noticed that our current set of dinner plates seems slightly smaller than the previous set we use to have (circa 2003).

I haven't the foggiest idea??? I guess maybe 10"?
I use a salad plate often as others mentioned -

We use salad plates for every day, dinner plates for holidays or big dinners, when we have larger amounts of food and it doesn't all fit on the salad plates.

Of course, if I’m having an indulging rack of ribs kinda day a 16” oblong platter is a must do....

If I’m using a plate it’s always the medium size one (I guess what people are calling a salad plate ). My favourite dish to use though is a shallow bowl. I Much prefer them to plates for some reason.

I don’t know why the pic turned sideways but they look like this and are from costco

A recent update, for some reason, causes photos taken with phones to always post in landscape orientation, regardless of how you took it.

A quick fix is to edit the photo (I just remove one row of pixels) and it'll post in the correct orientation.
