My husband started a new job this summer. We have been invited to a small dinner party over the holidays by one of the bosses.

I had bought a festive holiday wine carrier and was going to purchase some nice wine to bring. He comes home yesterday with an email, saying the person giving the party doesn't drink, but please feel free to bring your own bottle if you choose. We are not drinkers, so that is not the problem, the problem is

NOW What do I Bring!!!(dinner and dessert not an option)

Flowers? Candy?

Flowers, a poinsettia (sp?), a pretty plate with cookies, chocolates. If you have a Harry and Davids near you, try them. They have neat little gift things that would work for anyone that eats!

I've gotten holiday plates - decorative serving plates -on occasion and really enjoyed them. I think they were Fitz & Floyd. I also like it when people bring flowers in an arrangement/vase. Then I don't have to take care of flowers when I'm entertaining.

I notice you're from IL - Fannie May has some cute holiday stuff now.

Beeswax candles, they are virtually scentless. I wrap a lovely wired ribbon around them & place them in a gift box

some sort of regional small gift box. We live in New Hampshire & DH works in Massachusetts, I will line a small basket with a folksy napkin & put in a small jug of grade B (more difficult to find retail & we all cook with this), a small locally made honey hand cream & a local goat cheese or, if time is a factor, a small beeswax or bayberry votive & small, fancy box of matches.

A nice potted plant would be good. What about non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice...you could put that in the wine carrier thing.

I'm just curious as to what you finally decided on. I'm never quite sure what to do in these situations myself.

I like to bring a nice bottle of olive oil and dipping herbs - maybe some small plates. Put all in a cellophane bag and tie with pretty ribbons. Many restaurants use this for bread dipping (in place of butter) and this gift has always been well received.

For a twist on the flower thing, instead of showing up with them , you could have an arrangement sent over the day before the party with a little note saying something like "we look forward to seeing you tomorrow- thanks for having us!" That way the hostess would know she has flowers to use for the party and doesn't go out and purchase more.

Thats what I like to do.
