dining with allergies confusing.

Our previous trips the information was detailed for DDs allergies. Brenda was fantastic. Now for an example: popcorn is on the non dairy list and non peanut list but contains coconut oil which is a tree nut. If I missed that my DD would have gone into anaphylaxis shock. Its just a lot of paperwork. I will always ask at restaurants and carts but she is old enough to realize (7) if I ask and its not safe she gets upset. Its nice to know what I'm up against when I get there and direct her toward safe snacks.

You may want to check with your DD's allergist on the coconut. Technically, coconut isn't a tree nit but the FDA, for some strange reason, lists coconut with tree nuts. Many people with tree nut allergies hae no reaction to coconut.

My DD was tested and is indeed highly allergic to coconut. Stinks because she can't have Baby cakes either. Thanks

Babycakes does have several items that do not contain coconut or can be made without coconut. The only coconut on the cupcakes is in the icing. If you contact them ahead of time, you can special order items and they will take extra care to keep them away from your allergens and avoid cross-contamination as much as possible. It's not guaranteed of course, but they do an amazing job. It depends on your comfort level.

I'm deathly allergic to tapioca, so bad that I have to wear a mask in the restaurant because of the yucca fries served at Pollo Campero, and I have never had an allergic reaction to anything I've eaten from Babycakes.

I was under the impression that all of the cupcakes contain coconut oil. I was told in downtown Disney they are all made with it. I just checked their site too and it states it is an essential in their products. If they do it differently than that's great news for us.

That's my understanding too. I believe they use coconut oil as their shortening. It certainly wouldn't hurt to call to get definite answers. You never know unless you check.

They have a section in the back of their ingredient's binder listing what people with certain allergens CAN have. It certainly can't hurt to send an email asking what might be safe for a coconut allergy. The managers are really good about getting back to people. I remember several emails and phone calls going back and forth when I realized they were at DTD.

For dairy and nut allergies at table service it is totally not a problem to get a safe meal. They all seem to stock tofutti and rice dream ice cream if there is nothing else safe. At quick service even if they sent you info you still need to read the binder because things change frequently. So many people have allergies now we had issues where they ran out of products which was irritating when we went out of our way to go somewhere I thought I could have a regular meal and ended up with pasta and olive oil ;)

Sorry to hi-jack this thread --- but where do we get this "binder" to check for CS meals? I've listed ds's allergies on the ADR's we have and when I spoke w/ someone while changing one ADR she told me that was all I needed to do. But, now I'm a little nervous about the CS meals and any chances of cross-contamination.

Not to highjack your thread but I am curious as to why you (and so many others) post food allergy threads in the disABILITIES forum as opposed to the Disney Restaurants forum? I might have missed the memo and if so, I apologize for my question.

I posted a n allergy question a few days ago on both boards, but only got responceson this board. Usually if you post something medical you get referred to this board. I had asked a questions about my husbands weight, my low sodium diet, dogs at Ft. Wilderness (I have sever Cynophobia, or fear of dogs) and every time I have been referred here. People here will answer and other on other boards they won't most of the time.

You tell the cashier that you have allergies and they'll call a manager over to you. Either the cashier or the manager will pull out the binder. The manager will go over what they can make that will be safe for you. If you have any questions about cross-contamination, the manager is the one to ask.

They are starting to have allergy menus like the ones passed out to people waiting in line. They only have recommendations for common allergies but they make a great dtarting point for many food allergy guests.

Thank you! I thought perhaps it was something I needed to order ahead of time. Food can be tricky for youngest bec in addition to the allergies/asthma he has SPD/ADHD/LD's which have all together led to him being a "problem eater."

They are very good at handling cross contam issues ESP if you let them know the seriousness of that allergy. With a picky eater it may get more complicated because there sometimes aren't many choices. A burger or hot dog with no bun sometimes works. Nearly everywhere stocks allergy free foods brand chicken strips you can google for ingredients but when my kids have tasted mine they don't like them and say they taste too peppery.
