this will probably sound like a stupid question to all of you experienced cruisers but what is meant by dining rotation?

Disney ships have 3 main dining restaurants. Each evening of your cruise you will be assigned to dine in one of them, with your serving team being the same at each dinner.

This dining rotation will be revealed to you on the first day.

There are 3 main dining rooms onboard. You will be assigned to dine in each of them by a certain pattern. The general rotation for most cruises is 1231231 and so on. In the order (on the Dream class ships) Enchanted Garden followed by Royal Palace, followed by Animator's Palate, followed by Enchanted Garden, etc.

1/3 of the passenger complement is assigned to Enchanted Garden first (their #1), 1/3 to Royal Palace (their #1) and the remaining 1/3 to Animator's Palate (their #1) on the first night. Each night you go to the next dining room in order. That's the rotation.

Your servers also follow the same rotation, so you will always have the same serving team.

So a typical rotation on the Fantasy could be ERAERAE; RAERAER; AERAERA.

Some cruises double up on the rotation, the 4 night Dream is typically 1223. ERRA; RAAE;AEER.

If you have a favorite restaurant can you request the rotation that gives you that one 3 times on a 7-night cruise?

Certainly, just call DCL and ask for the request to be placed on your reservation. They will point out "it's just a request, yada yada yada". Just agree and ask for it to be placed there anyway.

Most of the time such requests are honored. Sometimes not.

Otherwise..... you'll know your dining rotation when you get to the pier.

BTW.... have you thought about 1st or 2nd feeding? I like the 2nd feeding where you get to sleep in an extra hour before your debarkation breakfast. I like being able to sit and relax in the dining room waiting for my debarkation time slot.

No one has mentioned this yet, but each restaurant has it's own menu that you will get to try once, your second time in that restaurant will have a different menu--a theme menu that every restaurant has that evening--like the 'Pirate Menu', or 'Captain's Gala' menu. You will not repeat a menu during your cruise.
