Dining Reviews Sep 2008 & Feb 2009 Update 8/13 - Complete!

Wow, that is a really great way to go about things! I think too many of us try to do and see ALL aspects of the World, and just end up going crazy. I did this on my latest trip and ended up spending like four hours in the middle of my second to last day, knocked out on my bed sleeping! I think I am going to follow your lead and take inspiration from your plans on my next trip, so thank you!
Yup, there is no way to do everything in one trip. This was my seventh trip, (and my fourth one solo,) and I still haven't even seen every attraction, much less done everything in the World. There is still so much I want to do that I haven't done yet, like the backstage tours, and see Crique de Solei.

On the morning of day three I had a breakfast reservation for Cape May Cafe.

When I originally planned out my intinerary and ADRs I hadn't included Cape May Cafe on my list, and instead had planned on Beaches and Cream for an early lunch. But, after reading some positive reviews here, and figuring out that Cape May Cafe was the only character meal I wouldn't have ever been to by the end of the trip, I decided to book it instead.

That was a mistake.

I had an 10:55 breakfast ADR, so it was really more of a brunch / lunch for me, as by the time I got to the Beach Club I had already been up for hours, getting to MGM and rope drop, and having a couple rides on Toy Story Mania, which is an awesome ride.

I arrived at the restaurant at 10:35 for my 10:55 ADR, and was given a pager. At 11:00, I still had not been seated. A family who had checked in before me, was also still waiting, and it turns out that the lady who was checking people in, had not been activating some of the pagers correctly, so some of us who were waiting, were not being seated when we should have.

Okay, mistakes happen. It was only five minutes after my ADR time, and I wasn't even that hungry, so it was no big deal. I was given a working pager, which went off a few minutes later.

I was led to my table, which the table next to, had dumped all of their stuff on. They told the CM who was trying to seat me, that they needed the space. The CM said she'd find me a different table, so I had to go back to the lobby, and wait. Again.

Now this was starting to annoy me. Those people had no right to take up an extra table for their purses and bags, while there were people waiting to be seated and have their breakfast. I was also annoyed at the CM for letting them do it, since she kind of blew me off with just a, "sorry, you're going to have to wait a little longer."

I considered walking out, and going to Beaches and Cream like I had originally planned, since it was open by then, but I decided to stay, since the buffet did look good, and I wanted to see the characters. Granted, I was seated a few minutes later, but with all the confusion it took to get seated, it had left me moody.

Anyway, once I did get seated, I was greeted by my server, Sui Chun. She was nice enough, but not very attentive, didn't clear my first plate for awhile, and it took awhile to get a soda refill. She wasn't the worst server I've ever had in my life, but probably was the worst this trip, that combined with the seating issues, was probably the most negative experience my whole trip.

I then went up to the buffet;

I had some omelet, breakfast potatoes, breakfast pizza, bacon, and bread pudding. The omelet was good, it was full of filler, which I liked, since I don't really like eggs all that much, and I like a lot of stuff added in. This had, ham, cheese, peppers, onions, peas, and there may have been some other stuff. I thought the peas were sort of odd in an omelet, but they weren't bad. The breakfast potatoes were good as well, and nicely seasoned. Both the potatoes and the omelet were a little on the greasy side though, I didn't mind much, but they were both a little greasy. The breakfast pizza I did not like, I thought it was very dry and unflavorful. The bread pudding was my favorite of everything I tried, it was not overly sweet, and tasted more like a warm cinnamon bun then bread pudding. The bacon was good, but not as crispy as I like, but it was decent.

I then went up to the buffet again;

I had some more of the omelet, potatoes, and bread pudding, as well as a chocolate crossiant, and my first ever Mickey waffle.

023.jpg

I found the crossiant to be all right, but nothing special, and the Mickey waffle was dried out and cold on the inside.

The character interaction here was weak as well. First of all there were only three characters, which is the lowest number of characters I've ever seen at a character meal. The characters were; Minnie, Goofy, and Dale. I found it extremely odd that Dale would be there, but Chip wasn't. The characters were nice and all, but I guess they just were tired since I was one of the last tables, and they wanted a break, because they didn't interact much. Not only that, but they took forever to come around, and I didn't see any of them until after I had finished eating.

Would I return to Cape May Cafe? Probably not. I think there are a lot of other better breakfast buffets, but maybe mine was an isolated negative experience, as I have read a lot of good reviews of it on the DIS.

I'm loving your report, even though I'm now having Disney cravings, both for food and Disney in general. I can't wait for your next installment!

I'm sorry Cape May did not work out for you. I wonder if it was because of the late dining time. I can understand how the characters may be tired at the end of the meal time and that would play into the interactions.

I would like to try this buffet, but would only do it if I was staying at one of the EPCOT resorts. It's just too far to go for breakfast.

CP is my favorite breakfast!

I think it's terrible that they didn't make the people take their bags off of your table and then for it not to be that nice either :headache:

There are many reasons on your report which would explain why I decided to dump this breakfast, and go to the Grand Floridian instead. What a bummer that you had to deal with the wait, and the food not being decent. Thanks for the review.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience I've gone a few times at almost closing and the food has still been good and the characters very willing for photos and autographs.

I'm having cravings too. Just today I was wishing I could go to Yachtsman Steakhouse tonight. I don't think I've had any red meat since I've been home, and I am seriously craving a steak right now.

Crystal Palace is one of my favorites too.

That definatly left me in a sour mood for the rest of the meal.

The Grand Floridian is such a nice resort. Where are you eating breakfast there?

I'm gald it's been good for you, I must've just been there on an off day. The only thing that I really liked that was memorable, was the bread pudding, everything else was just average or less. And the characters just seemed to want to get out of there, it was like a picture, and then they were gone.

Great review, can't wait for more.
Glad you're enjoying them.

I just wanted to add that Cape May Cafe was the worst meal I had all week. Which was due to a combination of a lot of things, rushed characters, average-at-best food and service, the confusion when being seated, and other rude patrons, whose bags are apparently more important then me.

So the rest of my reviews will be more positive. I had some more really amazing meals to share, and the next one up is Yachtsman Steakhouse, which may have been the best meal overall the whole trip, and definatly made up for my below average breakfast.

That really stinks about CMC. I actually have always had the opposite there. I think they should have made them move the bags....people are so selfish. and management? hello?

I thought it was so selfish too. I really should of walked out then, since apparently bags are more important then an actual guest.

I really hate the attitude some people have that they are better then everyone else, and are entitled to things, like an extra table for their bags. It really makes me sick sometimes how much some people get away with, and managment lets them.

While I would have moved my stuff off of an area that I was not "assigned" to you cannot fault the people when the staffing did not ask them to move it and allowed them the extra table at their request. Maybe (and it's just a thought) they were afraid that "causing trouble" would impact their tip??? Not that it makes it right but thinking from their POV - solo person vs. large party = your gonna get the short end of the stick because they are thinking in money terms not what is the right thing to do. In this instance I think it was the restaurants issue, not the other patrons and it should have been mentioned to the management at the time. Alot of the restaurants are set up for maximum capacity not the comfort or spacing to have much elbow room so I can see why needing the extra area might be needed with a large party.

While I agree that there was probably ways Mgmt could have handled the situation differently I have to agree with OP that alot of it was selfishness. We've all seen it at Disney, those so concerned about their own good time they are more than prepared to have it at the expense of other guests. We have been a part of large groups at Disney many times and NEVER considered using the next table to "store" our stuff. My Mom always told me that's what the space on the floor under our table was for!!

But...From the perspective of the server, a tip from a solo diner is better than NO tip from that table that is being taken up by bags for a whole meal. It is not fair to other restaurant patrons or the servers. I hate eating with a bag on my lap, but have done it many times, and would never think of taking up another table with my stuff. If the restaurant is empty, I can see it, but at WDW, when things are at capacity, it's just wrong.

No way would I have let those bags remain on the table. I would have said to the family, "Either you can move your stuff or I can move your stuff, but If I have to do it I'm probably not going to be as nice about it as you. You've got ten seconds." They would've moved it. Then I would've asked to speak with the manager and had my meal comped for the inconvenience of having to do the host's job and being made to wait unnecessarily, twice.

Disney is cutting back on everything: food, service, quality, all the while raising their prices. If you don't speak up for your rights and stand up for what's right, guests like that, and hosts like them, and restaurants like this will continue to walk all over people like us. And... scene.

While I see what you're saying, I still think it was inconsiderate of the guests, when it was an obviously full restaurant, and people were waiting to be seated.

I would also never consider putting my bag on another table. I always keep my bags either on the other end of my table, or on the floor by my feet.

Good point. $3 or $4 from me, is better then nothing from a table full of bags. Cape May Cafe is one of only two restaurants where I tipped slightly lower then the 18 - 20% range, because of poor service. And it wasn't the server herself who was so horrible, though she was very slow, and took forever to clear and refill, so the 15% or so tip I left her, I felt was more then adequate, but overall, worst service of the week, hands down.

I would be way too timid to say something like that to the guests, but I should have complained to managment. I wouldn't have even cared if my meal had been comped or not, but I should have complained just so they were aware of the problem. Maybe I should send an e-mail to Disney. Does anyone know how I could contact the restaurant directly?

I know I haven't posted anything for a few days, but I've been so busy, and I just found out that next week is going to be even crazier, at work and at home, so I do not know when I'm going to have any time to work on my reviews. But I did want to post something, and I do have half of my Yachtsman Steakhouse review complete, so here you go;

Yachtsman Steakhouse - Part One

Putting my disapointing meal at Cape May Cafe behind me, let's move on to Yachtsman Steakhouse. Cape May Cafe was the worst meal of the whole trip, Yachtsman Steakhouse was completely on the other side of the board, being one of, if not the best, meal I had all week.

Going into my trip there were only two signature restaurants I had never been to before, Yachtsman Steakhouse, and Narcoossees, (where I ate on the last night of my trip.) I had always put off eating at Yachtsman Steakhouse, thinking it's just a steakhouse. It's not that I don't like steak, I do, I love it as a matter of fact, but I had just never bothered to eat there before.

I had a 5:45 ADR for dinner, but arrived at the Yacht Club at around 5:15, after spending the day at MGM. I checked-in right away, and was seated as soon as the restaurant opened at 5:30. On the way to the table I was shown the dessert selections, which looked delicious.

181.jpg

I was then greeted by my server, Eric, and he was the best server I had all week. He had some close competition of being the best, but he was the best. He was very personable, and we talked about where I was from, how Pop Century, in both of our opinions, is the best value resort, and the upcoming Food and Wine Festival.

I was given a wine list in addition to the regular menu, (I have to say, at some restaurants I was not given a wine or drink menu, I don't know if this is because I look underage or what, (though when I did have a drink, I rarely got carded,) but a few times I didn't get a wine menu, when I saw them being presented at other tables.) Anyway, I was given one here, and I looked at it breifly, thinking I might want a nice glass of wine with my dinner. I saw they had one of my favorite dessert wines, so I decided to wait until dessert to drink, but told Eric I would be having a glass of wine then, in case I forgot to order it then.

I was then served bread.

183.jpg

The bread was nice flaky layered peel-apart rolls, and another one, that was just a plain dinner roll, and came with butter and roasted garlic. I loved the pull-apart rolls, and used a lot of the garlic on them. Seriously, I used about half of that cup of garlic between the two pull-apart rolls I was given.
