Hi all. We just returned from our fabulous 7 days in the world and since I found so much great info on these boards, I felt like I wanted to pay it forward with some dining reviews.
A few words of caution, however, before you get started.

1 - You will see a recurring theme - my 3.5 year old son will almost exclusively be having chicken strips, chicken nuggets, pizza or a peanut butter sandwich made in the room and packed in a cooler. He is picky. Always has been. I do not expect to cure this during our seven days at Disney, so will not even attempt it. Too much time and money was spent on this trip to have a meltdown at meal time over vegetables. ;)
2 - I have very realistic expectations. I do not expect every meal to be the most fabulous morsel of food I have ever eaten just because it was prepared in Disney. We live in NY and go to some really good restaurants here at home. This trip was about being in the parks and having fun. Also, I am not nit-picky. My meal will not be ruined because they changed the type of butter, or my green beans were too crunchy, or my table was facing the wrong direction.
3 - We decided against the DDP. We may have saved a few dollars if we had done it, but we were more concerned about being able to be flexible with our reservations and scheduling. That being said, some people will still feel the need to add up what I spent OOP and then show me how I could have eaten the same thing on DDP and gotten an extra mickey ice cream bar or counter service meal. Or how if I was on DDP I would have gotten so much more food if I had maximized the plan. Please don't. I'm fine with our decision.

OK - So, here we go...

Arrival day Sun: Quick lunch at Mara before we went swimming. Hubby and son both had chicken strips and fries (I know - great way to start the review - they're so adventurous!). I had the chicken pita w/cous cous on the side, which was delicious... usually grilled chicken is pretty dry but this was not. We also all shared a salad and a fruit bowl and got our refillable mugs.

Sunday dinner: 6:15 reservation at Chef Mickey's. Arrived at 6:00, seated right around 6:15. This place gets a lot of mixed reviews, but frankly, I thought it was really good. The menu is online, so I won't go thru everything, but I will say the mushroom ravioli triangles were probably my favorite. Hubby had several helpings of prime rib (that's what you get for having kid food for lunch!), the ham was good, the shrimp were good, overall I have no complaints. My FAVORITE dessert of the whole trip was the warm banana bread pudding. Yum!
My son was more tired than hungry (this was our arrival day and we had been up since around 5:00 am and he only slept for a short time in the car) so I was not going to fight with him about dinner - He ate a little mac and cheese, and a few bites of chicken strips (again). He had lots of fun with the characters, and was THRILLED to see "his girl" Minnie got to give her a kiss on the nose...the highlight of his day! We were happy to see that Donald was there instead of Chip and Dale, since they're pretty much everywhere you turn around. Characters came to visit more than once and spent a decent amount of time. Overall, I would recommend it.

Monday: We grabbed some muffins and yogurt for breakfast at Mara and headed to MGM. Had lunch with the gang at Play and Dine at Hollywood and Vine. My son had soooo much fun dancing with the singers and characters. We had an 11:45 reservation, (first seating) and were seated relatively on time. One side of the buffet still had breakfast items out, and the other side was lunch. The breakfast side was changed over within 20 minutes of our arrival. The menu is a LITTLE DIFFERENT than what is on the allears website - flank steak instead of pot roast, and 2 pasta dishes. Standouts: The flank steak and seafood pasta alfredo were both delicious. My husband agreed, and additionally he really liked the chicken that was in a red wine sauce which I did not try. Desserts were good, nothing WOW, but good. My son had his usual chicken nuggets (12 of them if you can believe it!) and ice cream for dessert. I would recommend this one also, especially if your kids are into the playhouse disney characters. It's loud, but that is something I would expect at a character meal geared for the younger crowd that is named "Play and Dine".

Monday Dinner: We left MGM right after the parade and went back to AKL to go swimming. Cleaned up and hopped over to MK for Spectro and Wishes. No one was really that hungry since we had a big lunch, so we grabbed a parade spot and sent hubby to get some hot dogs at Casey's. They really were good hot dogs. My son ate a few fries and a leftover applesauce I had thrown in my bag. (Keep in mind, the kid ate 12 chicken nuggets for lunch earlier that day). I kinda wished I had gone to get the food because for some reason, my husband put NOTHING on these hotdogs - not a drop of mustard or anything. Not sure what happened there, yet they were still good.

BTW - That was my first time seeing Spectro - it was amazing. Somehow in all my research I had completely missed the fact that it STARTS on Main Street, :confused3 so our spot in front of the train station was PERFECT. We ended up skipping wishes and heading out after the parade.

Tuesday: Hubby surprised me with a 9:00 am pedicure at Coronado Springs, so I grabbed some coffee and off I went. They got breakfast from Mara (I can't recall exactly, but if I had to guess I'd say a kids Mickey waffle platter and an egg and cheese croissant), did some swimming, then off to MK mid-afternoon. Funny - I have absolutely no recollection of eating lunch that day. Maybe we didn't? I'm really not sure. I'd like to think I fed my family, but I really can't swear to it.
Anyway, we had dinner reservations at 7:00 for Tony's Town Square. I only made these because this was planned as our MK day, and other than the Plaza (which had zero that my son would eat) it's the only non-character TS restaurant there and I figured after 2 character meals in a row, we would need a break. I also knew my son would eat pasta w/tomato sauce as long as I removed the offending meatball from his plate.
What I expected food-wise was Olive Garden or Macaroni Grill, (remember what I said about realistic expectations) and I was just about right. It was OK. We split the calamari appetizer (good but a little chewy), my husband had the Seafood Diavoli, which he said was OK, but kind of a small portion. I had the canneloni which was also OK. I wasn't sure why there was basil cream sauce AND tomato sauce on it, but whatever. They were very good about making my son penne with tomato sauce instead of spaghetti (he gags on spaghetti sometimes). I was a little confused, however, because I thought I could get his dinner with a salad and ice cream (since it was the a la carte list) but the server told me it came with 2 sides and bought out yogurt w/granola and fruit. Whatever. I found it pretty funny that we live in Staten Island, (probably the Italian Food capital of the country) yet here we were eating Italian Food in MK. So, I'll chalk it up as a life experiance and move on. It was OK, nothing to be scared of, but we probably won't be back. I think I'd just as soon do CS instead next time.

Coming soon...(probably not until tomorrow)

Counter Service: Flame Tree BBQ, Pinocchio Village Haus, Backlot Express and more Mara food.
Table Service: Mickey's Backyard BBQ, Garden Grill, Rainforest Cafe

Great reviews! My 3 year old only eats the same items that your son does! I think his vacation dining options will be about the same. I agree that it's not worth the fight to get them to try something new.

Thanks everyone...

Great reviews! My 3 year old only eats the same items that your son does! I think his vacation dining options will be about the same. I agree that it's not worth the fight to get them to try something new.

Especially not on vacation. I do what I can at home...

Anyway...on to Wednesday. It was our AK day and it was HOT! I had previously checked the menus and figured this was probably a good pack-a-sandwich day for my son. Lunchtime we found ourselves near Flame Tree BBQ. Husband had grabbed a turkey leg on the way (said it was great as usual), son ate his sandwich, and I had the smoked turkey sandwich w/cole slaw and got an order of fries for all of us to share. The turkey sandwich was OK, pretty dry, and the roll itself was pretty dry to the point that it was falling apart making the sandwich pretty tough to eat. Like I said, it was HOT that day, and the thought of eating a ribs or anything hot - ugh! They looked really good though...
Our intention was to go to Rainforest for dinner that night - it's a family favorite - we have one not too far from home too, and joined their safari club (do this if you plan to go there - priority seating and 10% off!) but it was hot and we were kind of wiped out so we went back to AKL mid-afternoon and jumped in the pool. Dinner (unintentionally) was at Mara - after swimming - the thought of the 3 of us cleaning up, changing, and going anywhere was not appealing. Boma was booked until pretty late (too late to eat w/a little one), so back to Mara. I had the African stew that came in a bread bowl. It was REALLY good - kind of sweet and very mildly spicy at the same time. Big chunks of beef, pork and veg's. If you're going there, TRY IT. Hubby had a bacon double cheeseburger (BORING - but he said it was good) and my son... come on... you know what's coming... chicken strips! We also shared a salad.
Thursday we were up bright and early for a.m. EMH at MK. Skipped breakfast and went straight there. Stopped at Main St Bakery where I had a coffee and a cinnamon roll. YUM! Sooo good, and still warm with the icing ooozing everywhere. Husband had an apple turnover which was gone in about 12 seconds, so I can only assume his was good as well. Grabbed my son a container of fruit loops (not with milk, heaven forbid) and we were on our way to Fantasyland.
Lunchtime came quickly and we decided on Pinocchio Village Haus since it was close and my son's all time favorite ride is Small World. We were lucky enough (after a bit of hovering and lurking) to get a table at the windows that overlook Small World, and he had a ball waving to the people in the boats as they went by. I had a pizza combo (comes w/salad), my son had about 1/2 of his pizza and a bit of my salad (although I think I could have fed him almost anything as distracted as he was), and my husband had a turkey Panini which he said was VERY good and the remainder of my son's pizza. We also shared Figaro Fries - fries topped w/bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and (I think) ranch dressing. They were good - kind of tasted like a "loaded" baked potato. I could almost hear my arteries screaming for help, but worth it. We went back to AKL mid-afternoon and I forced my son to take a nap, because that night we had reservations for Mickey's Backyard BBQ. Now, I know this is not a board favorite, especially for those on DDP because it's 2 credits. You're really not going there for the food though - its more about the characters and entertainment. Unfortunately the Disney Transportation Gods did not cooperate with us on the way there and after a nearly 2 hour trip to get there (yup, you read that right - almost 2 hours), we just dropped our stuff and headed out to the dance floor. Dancing with the characters was lots of fun, and contrary to the "official" description, they do come around to all tables for pics and autographs. We had gone in Oct, so knew what to expect food-wise. The food is OK - it's a BBQ. The burgers looked a little gross, so we skipped them. The hot dogs, BBQ chicken, ribs, salad, mac and cheese were fine...also included beer/wine, iced tea, lemonade, watermelon, mickey ice cream bars, and itsakadoozies. So we had lots of fun doing the macarena with Minnie and a locomotion conga line with Mickey, and BONUS, the boat got us back in time for the beginning of Spectro. Stayed for Wishes this time, saw Tink fly and made lots of new memories. We like the BBQ - it's not for everyone - it's loud, crowded, full of dancing kids strung out on Mickey ice cream bars. But it really is a lot of fun, especially for families. If you go, get there early for a good seat...they are long picnic tables that are shared, and you want to be kind of near the dance floor.

Only 2 more days to go, including my least favorite character meal ever...
Stay tuned...

Friday we went back to MGM to see a few things we had skipped earlier in the week. Lunch ended up being at Backlot Express. Lot of seating in the air conditioning was partly the deciding factor. I had a Grilled Turkey & Cheese with arugula and red peppers which was very good. husband had a hot dog, son had....I can't even type it again. You can guess.
Our week was almost gone and we had not stepped foot in Epcot. We decided to take the boat over, which was a nice rest and I enjoyed seeing those resorts as I had never been to that area before. (Coming from NJ originally, I could appreciate their attempt at a "Cape May" vibe.) Anyway, we saw the few things that were "must do" for us (except Soarin since there were no FP's left and we did not want to wait - good reason for another trip!)
So we were on our way out when my husband got in his head that he wanted to "Leave a Legacy". We got involved doing that (my son's little face will be there in 6-8 weeks :) ) and the lady there asks if we will be there for a little while...We had 6:00 ADR's for Garden Grill, but had decided to skip them and go to DTD for some shopping and hit RFC. She tell us she has a "magical moment" for us if we were staying, because it would be ready in about an hour at package pick up. So we change our minds and go to GG since it was around 5:40 and we were starting to get hungry.
The Garden Grill restaurant is basically a revolviong platform that slowly rotates past "The Land". It's family style character dinner w/Mickey, Pluto, Chip and Dale. My first issue (keep in mind I am not a complainer) is that every time someone moved a chair in/out from a table, the horrendous sound of the metal chair on the floor was enough to make you jump out of your skin. Plus it was just overall loud because it had started raining outside and a lot of people had ducked into "the land" to get out of the rain. We were seated on the upper part (1-2 steps above the lower level) and you really can't see much of "the land" as you rotate by. Mostly "the sky" and "the tree tops", but nothing atmosphere-wise that would have me running back. The characters came by a few times for quick visits (much more rushed than Chef Mickey's I thought). The salad was good - spring-mix with a raspberry vinagrette. Our platter had flank steak (OK, but the one at Play and Dine in MGM was much better) Mashed potatoes (OK), Turkey w/cranberry sauce (turkey was very dry and the cranberries were gross) Green beans and carrots (which were actually my favorite part of the meal - they were very crispy and not overcooked) and on the side was a bowl of fried catfish, which was pretty good, but seemed kind of random out there all by itself not on the platter of the other food. The included dessert was a puff pastry that had been filled with some kind of vanilla custard or pudding, topped with mixed berries. The berries were good, the pastry was rubbery and the custard made the bottom of the pastry very soggy. My son's platter was the same chicken strips, mac and cheese and fries he had eaten all week, and it was practically untouched. He liked decorating a cupcake for dessert, but then thought it was someone's birthday (because of the cupcake) and spent the next 20 mins insisting I find him a candle. Gotta love toddlers. Anyway, This is one we won't return to. Live and learn in the Land.
I'm just glad they had wine. ;)
Incindently, our "magical moment" ended up being a 5x7 photo of what his leaving a legacy photo will be. It turned out nice. Another excuse for another trip - we have to see it in person!
Saturday was our last day :sad1: and after checking out and sending our bags on their way (I LOVE THAT) we asked my son which park he wanted to go to and although I would have bet a million dollars he would say MK, we were off to AK. Had an early lunch at RFC. Split quesedillas for an appetizer, hubby and I each had burgers, my son had pasta w/tomato sauce This is one of my son's favorite restautants because of the fish tanks and thunderstorms, and it's a "must do" on every trip even though we have one not far from home.
We went thru AK, rode the safari one last time to say goodbye to our animal friends, followed the parade out of Africa, and started our journey home.

So, thanks for reading. I got very long winded and this basically turned into a trip report so mods, feel free to send it over there if you see fit.

Is it wrong that I've only been home 4 days and I'm dreaming of my next trip already??:rolleyes1
