The main purpose of our trip was to enjoy the Christmas decorations, special holiday events and do mostly ADR dining
yes, enjoying food was a priority. We wanted a more leisurely experience, and it had been a long time since just the two of us took a trip. So on with the food:
12/10 Dinner - California Grill I got nervous with so many negative reviews, but did not cancel. We were so glad! They were aware that we were celebrating our anniversary. When we arrived at our table, it was sprinkled with Mickey confetti and we were seated at a window table. We liked the new décor. The service from Rob was outstanding, greeting us warmly and wishing us a happy anniversary. His recommendations regarding our wine/beer and food selections were very helpful. We enjoyed talking to him as the courses came. DH enjoyed a couple of the imported beers while I had a nice glass of a Spanish red wine. We started with splitting the Dried Tomato Flatbread. It was hot crisp very good. All you could ask for in a flatbread. DH had the Duck In All Its Glory, and I had the Rock Shrimp Salad with pear and Wasabi cream. DH really enjoyed the duck, however with the size, he thought we should have split it. The rock shrimp salad was divine with just a little kick but not too much. The bread was a sour dough and a lavender focaccia. The sour dough was very warm, and the lavender focaccia just a little warm. Both were yummy! For entrees, DH had the Pork Two Ways. He was impressed and loved it! I had the Filet of Beef. My steak was very good and done to a perfect medium rare, however I wasnt crazy about the tomato risotto. For dessert we split a crème brulee yummy! Other than the disappointing tomato risotto, the food was delicious! We enjoyed going out onto one of the terraces after our meal. The views are spectacular! We will return.
12/11 Lunch Yak & Yeti We had great food and service by Brian. We started by splitting the Seared Ahi Tuna with ginger sauce and the pan-seared Pork Pot Stickers with a soy-lime dipping sauce. Awesome! We both had the Seared Miso Salmon with a baby bok choy/****ake mushroom stir fry and jasmine rice. This was one of the best salmon dishes I have ever had .done to perfection (meaning not overcooked still moist) and the glaze was to die for. We finished with DH having the mango, lemon and raspberry sorbet, and I had to have the Fried Pineapple/Cream Cheese Wontons with vanilla ice cream and a honey drizzle that I had read so much about on the Dis Boards. Wow...I was not disappointed!
12/11 Dinner Monsieur Paul We love the quiet, not-so-crowded atmosphere of this restaurant. We started the evening with selecting a bottle of red Italian wine. The service from Remy was outstanding, and his suggestions were very helpful regarding a wine selection and food. DH started with the escargot ravioli with a creamed parsley sauce. I had the Roquefort salad with pears and caramelized pecans. Both were winners. For entrée DH had the duck breast ala orange and I had the scallops with black truffle pasta. Both were delicious! The black truffle flavor really came through in the pasta. DH had a flight of cognac (3 cognacs of different ages) and I had the bar of chocolate to complete the meal. The bar of chocolate was a layered bar with a flourless chocolate cake, praline crunch, chocolate passion fruit ganache and chocolate mousse. It was very good and DH really enjoyed his cognac flight. No disappointments here!
12/12 Lunch Via Napoli We love Italy and traveled there as recently as October 2012. So our expectations for the food were high. Valeria was our server and we were very pleased with her service. We started with splitting the fried calamari rings with spicy tomato sauce and Arancini (fried risotto balls filled with mozzarella and meat with a tomato dipping sauce). We enjoyed both immensely! Now to the pizza. We split a small Margherita pizza (tomato, mozzarella and basil). Having had appetizers, a small was plenty big. It took us back to Italy. The crust was perfect and the toppings were just as expected. No dessert here. I had plans to get a caramel crunch bar at Germany (and it was out-of-this-world good) . Via Napoli met our high expectations and we will return.
12/12 Dinner The Plaza Restaurant This was the most lackluster meal that we had. Deborah, our server, did her job, but with no warmth or enthusiasm. It was very crowded and noisy. DH had the turkey sandwich on multi-grain bread and I had the club sandwich on the same bread toasted. The sandwiches were very good, but nothing special. This worked well since we were attending MVMCP in MK that evening so we werent sorry we went. We were looking for a lighter meal for our dinner that day and the location was right.
12/13 Lunch Be Our Guest I really wanted to have lunch at this restaurant, but knew there was no way DH was going to wait in line for very long. I was lucky to be able to get a FastPass for our BOG lunch! We pre-ordered two French soups, a turkey sandwich on a baguette, a triple-chocolate cupcake, a Masters cupcake and our beverages. We checked in outside and were immediately sent inside to a very short line. At the head of the line, we were sent directly to an open cashier. DH scanned his Magic Band, our pre-order popped up, and it was paid for. Wow how cool! We looked at the rooms (what great theming) and selected the quieter Rose Room. I picked a table not too close to the rose so we werent bothered by people coming in to take photos of the rose (I picked up this tip from a Dis Board posting). We also enjoyed the painting of the prince that would turn to the beast now and then. We enjoyed the French onion soup; I appreciated that it was not too salty. We split the turkey sandwich. The highlight was the two cupcakes moist decadent. The Masters cupcake was not on the menu originally. It is the chocolate cupcake with the grey stuff (cookies & cream panna cotta on top with a small square of dark chocolate).
Really good!
12/13 Dinner Victoria & Albert Meal of a lifetime. See my separate posting for this meal under Restaurant Reviews.
12/14 Lunch Hollywood Brown Derby We love the décor at this restaurant and Tark provided us great service. Did not rush us at all. We started with sharing an Artisanal Cheese platter with brie, goat cheese and blue cheese and several accompaniments. Delicious! For entrées, we both ordered Wayugu cheeseburgers. They arrived cooked perfectly rare and medium. The flavor was fabulous probably the best burger Ive ever had. No dessert here. Really enjoyed the venue and food!
12/14 Dinner Chefs de France This was the restaurant that we selected for the Candlelight Procession package. It was packed! I forgot how close the tables are placed, and the noise was so loud it was almost impossible to talk. Putting that aside, Victor gave us great service attentive without being overly so. With the place so crowded, I wondered how the service was going to be, but no problems. DH started with baked escargot with parsley and garlic butter (so good for soaking up with a fresh baguette). I had a salad with warm goat cheese, grapes, walnuts, etc .very good. We both had the salmon. It was good and not overcooked, but after having the Miso Glazed salmon at Yak & Yeti, it just didnt compare. DH finished with the sorbet with a Madeline cookie, and I had the crème brulee. The meal and service were very good, however Im not sure it will be on our list to return to on our next trip.
It was a wonderful trip with the holiday decorations, Osborne Lights, Candlelight Procession and MVMCP. We enjoyed leisurely lunches and dinners. With only a couple of exceptions, the food and service met and many times exceeded our expectations! Cant wait to return. Thanks to everyone who posted information that helped me plan our trip!
