We just got back on Saturday. We did a split stay 5 nights at POR MYW package with dining and then switched to 4 nights at AKL paying for food ourselves:

The cast was two adults and two kids 6 and 9

Table Service Locations (all dinner except Chef Mickey’s):

11/25 Chef Mickey’s (breakfast) – 4 credits
11/26 Whispering Canyon – 4 credits
11/27 Spoodles – 4 credits
11/28 Le Cellier – CP package 4 credits
11/29 California Grill – 4 credits OOP for kids meals
12/1 50’s Prime Time Café – OOP no longer on DP
12/2 Boma – OOP no longer on DP

Counter Service

11/24 Riverside Mill (POR food court) – 3 Credits
11/25 Peco Bill’s – 3 Credits
11/26 Wolfgang Puck Express – 3 Credits
11/27 Mainstreet Bakery – 2 Credits
11/28 Electric Umbrella – 4 Credits
11/29 Riverside Mill – 2 Credits
11/29 Tusker House – 3 Credits
11/30 The Mara (AKL food court) – OOP no longer on DP
12/1 Starring Rolls Bakery – OOP no longer on DP
12/2 Sunshine Seasons – OOP no longer on DP
12/3 ABC Commissary – OOP no longer on DP

Overall we did very well with food and the dining plan and really did not have a bad meal but we had some really great ones, too.

TS reviews - I highly recommend all of the table service places we ate at with the exception of 50’s prime time which was just average. It is a cute place with a great theme and our server was good but the food was blah. Boma, Spoodles, Le Cellier and the Cali Grill were simply outstanding. The food at Chef Mickey’s and Whispering Canyon was better than expected but the setting and entertainment made these two huge hits; Chef Mickey’s obviously for the characters and Whispering Canyon for our server, BJ aka Bobby the Kid. He was hysterical and had my daughters in stitches from start to finish. It was one of the highlights of the whole trip.

CS reviews – Mostly run of the mill food court stuff with the following exceptions: The Thanksgiving meal at Riverside Mill was very good. The sandwiches at Tusker House and especially Sunshine Seasons were worth noting. Wolfgang Puck express was also different and very good.

Snacks – Ice Cream, Popcorn and Water. We had 7 credits left when checked in at AKL and bought 7 waters to drink the rest of the week.

DDP review: The Dining Plan is WAAAAAY worth it. The plan cost us $90 a day. Even if you eat a "normal" table service meal, each TS meal is going to cost you about $90. So you can look at it as your are paying for your table service and getting your counter service meals and snacks for free. However, our bills were usually about $120-$150. Our meal at the Califonia grill was over $230 (We paid some out of pocket). And since each CS meal can cost between $20-$50, it is very much worth it. When we were off the plan we spent about the same amount but did not get nearly as much food.

There were a few pitfalls/pains with the plan: First, trying to"maximize" credits. There is so much food, we usually only got 3 CS meals at a time and we shared them. For breakfast we usually only got 2 and shared them. It was a pain trying to figure out when to order two, three of four meals at a time. For TS we had planned to try paying for some of the non buffet kids' meals out of pocket and then save the credits to use later for the adults which we never did except at the California Grill and that was only because we only had 4 credits left (no way I was using 4 credits for two bowls of Kraft mac 'n cheese anyway).

The second pitfall, is that the TS meals can put a crimp in your planning for the day. It never works out that you done at a park at the exact time you planned to eat, so you have to work around the ADRs and getting to a restaurant can be a pain depending on where you are and where you are going. If you are not on the plan, it is easy to just bag the TS meal and grab a burger. One of the ways we got around this is we made a few backup ADRs at different times/places and just canceled the ones we decided to bag. But make those reservations!!! You don't want to be stuck with credits and have no place to eat.

Finally, It was very confusing as to what was included and what was not and we got a different answer at each restaurant we went to. My wife and I found it amusing how each time we sat down at a table service place we got a different spiel about what was included and what was not. Some places the kids got appetizers some not. Some places they could get milk. Some not. Some places they could get refills on milk. Some not. At Whispering Canyon the server said "order anything you want I don't care." So we got milkshakes as our drinks (yum!) and other places like Le Cellier would not bring us milk for the kids because "they get audited regularly." It was inconsistent and kind of a pain. We had similar experiences at the Counter Service locations.

Thanks for the comprehensive reviews!! Great tips on the dining plan, I also think its worth it, looking at how much we ate last time...

Enjoyed reading your review ~ Thanx for posting.

Huskies, why didn't you get the dining plan for your entire stay?
The main reason is because of the split stay. In order to get the plan for the entire trip we would need to buy a whole new package including theme park tix when we checked in to AKL. And even if we got a one day ticket, it is not cost effective. It can be done, though, you can get a one day ticket and save it for a future trip but it makes more sense to extend and use your first set of tickets because of the agressive sliding scale...

The second reason was we wanted to do it both ways. With the plan and without. We knew that the first part of the trip durnig T'giving week would be the crowded time so we had a more rigid plan and spent less time in the theme parks. We did DTD and ate at some great restaurants on the plan. The second part of our trip it was less crowded in the parks so we did less planning and winged it more which is better suited for counter service meals.

12/1 50’s Prime Time Café – OOP no longer on DP
12/2 Boma – OOP no longer on DP

OOP- Out of Pocket? No longer on dining Plan?
On Disney's site they are listing both as options on the dining plan for 2006. Boma is a must every trip and my kids enjoy 50's. Did they tell you this when you arrived? When you made your ADR's or whatever they are called? It concerns me to pay for this option/plan and then arrive in June and not have half of the choices we want available.

I am pretty certain the OP just meant this was the part of their stay where they didn't have the Dining Plan - not that the actual resturants aren't part of the plan.

Whewwww!!! Thanks, because I was so excited about DVC members finally being able to use the plan. I was going to be terribly dissappointed if they weren't allowing those.

Yes...Sorry about that. I paid out of pocket because I switched resorts and was no longer on the plan.

You scared the h#$% out of me too with that line, no longer on DP. DON'T DO THAT!

I can't understand why milk would not be covered. It is the same price as a soft drink on the menu. And the brochure states non-alcoholic beverage not soft drink only. I can understand not including smoothies or milkshakes as a dink but not milk.

That is incorrect. You can absolutely get the dining plan for your entire stay when you are staying at two seperate resorts without buying two seperate packages. The problem is that the CRO computers don't know how to do this, so you have to speak with Guest Relations. One of the members of this board has done this already.

Well, it is a little late for me now but this would be a good tip for someone else who wants to do a split stay with the plan. I was OK with paying for meals myself the last 4 days so no big deal. What is the number for Guest Relations??

Is milk really not included??? That seems absurd to me! I mean, that's what kids drink isn't it? Please say it isn't so! I thought all non-alcoholic beverages were included - pop, juice, coffee, tea, milk. Seems some include smoothies/shakes, others don't. That doesn't bother me cause those are more expensive, but MILK? We really want to do the plan, but my kids drink only milk, chocolate milk and water. Water throughout the day, and milk with meals - so that's what they'd be ordering. I really hope this is wrong, cause it would be a pain to be paying for milk at each meal!

I don't know. There was a post by the member who did the split stay with dining the whole time, and she posted the number. You'll have to do a search(or hopefully someone with the info can post it here).

You couldn't get milk because they didn't serve it, or because of the dining plan?
On the plan. You can get it but you would have to pay for it OOP.

When we were there in August we were on the Dining Plan and I only drink milk with my meals as I have diabetes and can't drink regular pop and the diet soda that WDW restaurants serve has aspartame in it which gives me severe migraines. I had to explain this to several servers as to why I couldn't have soda and had to have milk, but never had a problem getting milk on the plan. Le Cellier gave me the hardest time, but once they understood it was a "medical" reason and not just a preference they gave in and allowed me to have it. I normally don't need refills, but if I did need one they gave me one without me even asking at all of our table service meals. We had varying success in getting milk at counter services though. This is just my experience though, things have gotten stricter since we've been there I've heard!

First, thank you for this thread! They're offering the DP to DVCers soon as I am excited as I KNOW we will save $$!! Our plans will not be tied to packages or tickets though since we already have accomodations. Anyway, that would really be bad if they don't allow milk at most places..and getting stricter? OK..that's just not right. WHat about the smaller children (ages 3-6 or higher) who have to pay and need that milk? There's no way I am giving soda or juice to my 3 yo DD all day and they shouldn't expect anyone to! Hopefully, there won't be a problem by the time we go, but I'll get my DD milk one way or the other.
