Dining Plan - worth EVERY PENNY!! Saved $$, ate better

Oh, one other thing I wanted to say. I been reading differant threads and wondering how some are saving so much money! The person who posted above gave some scenerio's and I figured it out. Everybody calculates differantly how they saved money. I have been going bottom line. Running the figures.

For example, I would do a cost anylisis for no discounts, AP and free dining.

When I did AP I was figuring room only, calculated costs of dining-I had most of the kids and my husband pick were they wanted to eat in the differant parks and then what they wanted to eat.(from the downloaded menus off www.allearsnet.com) This was to take a survey of what where my family wanted to eat. We had enough simularities of what restaurants we would pick on the plan! I did my itinarary up figured up where we would be when and eating at which restaurants. I had some of the kids who wanted to participate more pick there choices again.(some didn't have to because it ended up being their origional-the girls and me where having fun!) So, I was able to get a fairly accurate cost of the food. Just for your info, I found a pattern to the counter service meals all costing about the same money for the most part. The sit downs were more varied, but had a ball park. And finally the tickets we were going to mail order through ticket mania for the best deal.

Now I would do this for each: no discounts- using the same amount for food out of pocket. Rack rate for rooms, actually I couldn't do that!! I would never pay rack rates! There is always a deal somewhere!! Thats what got me to the boards in the first place!! So I take that back. My base was from a AAA discount on rooms.(but it is always nice to have the other figure to know what I could have paid retail.-scary!!- We would never go on vacation!)
and the cheapest way I could get my tickets(either AAA or through the mail. I found AAA in Orlando had the tickets I wanted for the same price, but they said I had to pick them up. For those wondering. AAA in Maine had differant tickets they offered for less. I found that differant AAA offices in differant states carry differant tickets from Disney.

So anyways I had a base of comparison from AAA discounts seprately and I just remembered AAA package deal.(for those that don't know, before the free dining special on the plan- you could book the MYW package with dining included cheaper through AAA, then through Disney. AAA applied another small discount to the whole package deal. I also found out that AAA works very closely with Disney, so it was just something us bargain hunters had to find out on our own.) So much I've learned and still have to learn I keep going on bunny trails to explain, because I wanted to understand all this when I read your posts. Let's see if I can sum this up.

I had two differant AAA prices. One completely seperate-room only, food and cheapest tickets. The other a package deal through Disney with AAA discount. The Disney package quote and Disney seperately with us buying our own food. And the AP way. Whew, what alot of figuring. I had it down to AP being the best way to go. -booking all your own componants seperately. The dining was close- being realistic to what you would eat and having fun still, but not feeling like you could do anything you wanted.(that's the treat of the dining plan for those of us that don't get to do stuff like that)

So I put on 14 day hold w/Disney my lodging through AAA discounts on May 31st. After much discussion, I get the feeling I should be calling every morning at 7:00a.m. to get the AP rates. The second day I call they are in!
I change AAA rates to AP. I go back on Mousesavers and Allearsnet and don't find any AP rates. I email them to let them know. I got an email back from Mousesavers, she said thank you, this was totally unexpected, I am on it.(from me tracking the previous days when codes have come out it is usually later) I keep checking there sites for the updates. Finally Mousesavers posts the AP and posts something about dining you'll want to come back for details tomorrow. I get back on the phone with Disney and ask the dining dept. about this. They say they don't know, but they seem a little curious. I read exactly what I saw on the site, she says, yes there is a buzz going on here about some dining deal, but it doesn't start till tomorrow, you'll have to call back tomorrow. I call at 7:00 am and get someone who doesn't know anything, I call back get someone who can help, but I need to consult my parents. The frenzied day goes on..... and some days that follow trying to figure the best plan of attack. The figures all start rolling all over again trying to figure from every angle. We finally have a "new and improved plan!" It was definately cheaper to go with free dining for us and we could stay longer because of it. We were looking for more days, but couldn't afford it. The less days you save the less the savings.

So anyways, I have realized everyone calculates their savings differantly!
I go with the bottom line of comparing apples to apples. I do not go on how much I saved for free dining. And technically its hard to compare apples to apples when what we would have ate doesn't compare to what we can now do on the free dining!!!!!!!!! So, yes to you that are asking, but you wouldn't have spent that on food really.

Wouldn't it save you money, staying 9 plus nights, by using AP discount rate for hotel and your ticket and then buying the meals that you want? It just works out for us that the room discount is considerably more than any savings we may get from the dining plan.

This was our ONLY trip we will EVER make to Disney World. Paying $$$ for a discount plan that is basically for life made no sense in that scenario.

Hi, love all the info on these boards but I still have not found an answer to a question I need help with. Does my 2 yr old eat free "off" my plate or does she eat a meal of her own? Anyone been there and what have you done?

if you look at my break down and my original entry on this thread I explain this. They do not get their own food unless it's a buffet or character meal (like at Cinderella Table, Chef Mickey, she got to eat her own food). At most sit down places we actually ordered for the 2 yr old and had the 5 yr old share our food. So, NO they don't get their own dinner at most places. But as I explained, it was not a problem.

My family and a another family are going camping in AUg. We were discussing places to go and things to eat. She was then planning on cooking at least one meal at the campsite. The biggest problem we ran into was we only have one stove between us (she's flying and we are driving) and then we have to feed at least 4 teenage boys, 1 father 3 daughters and two mothers. This would take a great deal of time and effort. She then said "Someone told me about the dinning plan" We had always planned on eating at one restaurant a day so when we ball parked a figure she was only a couple of hundred dollars from the meal plan. This did not include the food we would have to buy to feed the kids and snacks. SO I am now checking into the meal plan and may not have to cook at all.   I am on vacation.

I just booked a 10 night MYW package w/ free dinning. We could have taken a military discount on our room and bought our tickets at Shades of Green, but this would have cost us at least $400 more just by paying out of pocket for food. We also had the option of taking a special Operation Iraqi Freedom vacation package offered through Shades of Green, but that would still have cost us about $200 more. I love the free dining deal!!!!! This should be our best vacation yet. I just wish we could afford to stay at a deluxe. Oh well, maybe another year after we win the lottery! :rotfl2:

I have one question for NORA94, I think you wrote that you used TS credit for Fantasmic DP, I was told that I could not do that. Did you do that at the park or on the dining line? Should I just keep trying until some one lets me?
Thanks!

We went to Fantasmic, but didn't tie it into a meal. Actually we probably had much better seats than if we did.

We ate at Sci Fi and literally the waiter was SO slow, I swear he forgot about us more than once. It came down to the point where we told flagged him down and told him we had to go. We took cookies to go cause we wanted to be able to get good seats at Fantasmic and not risk getting bad ones. We got there about 45 minutes early. On the far right side as you are walking in the whole section was blocked off for people with the fantasmic dining passes. We sat on the far left side, front row. By about 30 minutes before the Fantasmic section was more than 1/2 way full. So, don't think the extra pass did people any better than getting there the same amount ahead.

I think I read the answer to this already but because my memory is not always so good and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with our Dining choices (11 days on-site!! :cool1:  ) I'm going to ask again.

One night we are going to eat at Shutter's at CBR. Being that there are no appetizers listed on the kids menu (checked Deb's site) they (my 2 boys - age 10 yrs and 5 years) will each be able to order an appetizer off the adult menu?

If the answer is yes I think it would be better to order one only 1 child's meal and 1 adult meal and everybody just share.

Thanks in advance for your help! :wave2:

Has anyone who has gone recently noticed whether restaurant menus have changed to accommodate the choices on the dining plan? More appetizers/kids appetizers offered, for example? I'm also thinking snack carts may start offering more things in the plan's snack range (under $2.50). Just curious if any regular park goers have noticed differences in what's offered.

shellynn24-- we used the dining package for FDP three weeks ago. i just made my FDP PS for mama melrose like you would normally. then when it came time to pay i told our waitress that we were on the plan. that was it- no questions, nothing. got our passes and were off!

Belle0101 -- yes, if there aren't any apps on the kids menu then they can order an app off the adult menu. we were told this at Coral Reef. fyi- our lunch there would have costs us $189.00! i love the dining plan!

We are going Sept 12-22. When are you Sept people going?
We're going Sept 24-Oct-1. We staying at ASMo, had to give up SOG for free dining. I'm glad I wasn't the only one going crazy over whether or not I would be saving money!

shutters has no kids appetizers, but don't cheat yourself! That was one of our best meals there, the food was great, the service delightful. Our waitress (Marsail or something like that) gave us extra food - we used 3 credits but got 4 appetizers, a grown up meal for the kids to share instead of a kid's meal, and extra desserts too.

Hi Nora, did you happen to ask if the 16inch pizza at Old Port Royale cost 1 CS or 2 CS? Thanks. :flower:

Oh my, I have no idea what size pizza we even got. It was a pizza, salad and breadsticks and dessert for one counter service. The pizza was plate size. Don't think it was the big one. So, you would have to order 2 pizzas to feed a whole family. BUT warning - dh said the pizza was nasty. He added crushed red pepper and that helped, but not a recommended meal item.

I just want to say thanks Nora :goodvibes :cheer2: :goodvibes . For our upcoming trip we got an AP rate at the Pop and planned on buying the DDE card. I was already happy with that deal but then thanks to this thread we now have free dining for all but 2 of our nights which worked out to 20 dollars each per day for our food!! :mickeybar :jumping1: :mickeybar I have been having a blast planning all our meals and am looking forward to our trip I think even more now, which I didn't think was possible!

Brilliant! Thanks again!
