We just got back LATE last night from Disney World and I had to take time to post about how GREAT the Disney Dining Plan turned out. :wizard: We were there 9 nights with me, dh, dd5 and dd2. The 2 yr old was free so it cost us $720 for the 9 night stay for our food. ($35 + $35 + $10).

Before we left I was worried about not having credits for the 2 year old. It turned out to be no problem at all. We usually ate 3 meals a day and easily had enough food. What we did was buy the biggest breastfast platter item usually. At our hotel (Carribean Beach, also great, btw!), that was the Isle Bounty platter - it had scrambled eggs, potatoes (yummy!), a piece of french toast, sausage patty and bacon and a biscuit. You got to get a "dessert" with that, we got either a fruit cup, a cinnamon roll or danish or zucchinni bread that was just like dh's mom makes. We also got a drink. Since dh and I purchased the mugs from the hotel we got our dd's drinks - Oj, Choc milk or juice boxes. Usually they split one choc milk and we saved the extra for later. Occassionally we got pancakes (w/side of sausage) or some other meal, but we were still able to get the "dessert" and drink. So, we were able to get 2 meals and easily have enough food for all 4 of us without feeling hungry at all.

For lunch we did the same, got the biggest counter service thing we could. At Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe (magic kingdom) you can get 1/2 slab of ribs, 1/2 rotessiere chicken, mashed potatoes and carrots as ONE meal! Add in dessert and a drink and you're set. Dh got a double cheeseburger w/fries. Again, 2 counter services fed us all easily. Lots of times dh was too full from the breakfast and skipped lunch or just had parts of one counter service.

We enjoyed having the variety, the flexibility and the chance to try new foods. I think that we would have spent about $700 either way, but without the plan we would have eaten the cheapest things, had plain old cereal in the hotel room all the time and really not have eaten at any fancy resturants.

Here is the best part - our food bills totalled $1226 at the end! We ate $500 worth of extra food basically! WOW!!! On our last day we "bought" 9 Mickey Mouse Rice Crispy Treats and took those homes as we still had that many snack credits left. We also twice gave extra tip.

One problem we had was actually poorer service twice. It was almost like the servers KNEW they were gettting 15% so why bother. This happened at Whispering Canyon Cafe and again at the Yacht Club Galley. :sad2:

We also had to watch our credits. Once we were double charged for counter services and another time the server (YCG time) rang it as 4 guests instead of 3 so it took one off. He assurred us the manager had fixed it but it wasn't. At Whispering Canyon the waitress wanted to charge us for my 2 year old having some milk shake and a cookie as if she had eaten a whole meal. These are easier taken care of at the lobby of the hotel instead of at the time we learned. It took 20 minutes for them to fix the WCC one.

I will make a seperate post later with the details of the meals we ate, right now, gotta entertain some kids.

I highly reccommend this plan to anyone - it was more than worth the money and made our vacation feel like a vacation!

I was curious though..if you didn't have the dining plan would you have ordered that much food and thus really spent that much money? Did you only get all that food because it was included and you already paid for it?

Wow what a savings! Did you use your TS credits for the children?

Yes, we used one children's dinner table service each table service meal we ate. We only ONCE got a counter service child's meal, that was near the end when we had 10 counter services left for 3 days though and partly cause I wanted the cute little Mickey plate they serve them in. :earsboy: At Shutters the waitress put in the order as an adult entree but that was not our choice and was way too much food.

You are right, we would NOT have ordered desserts, appetizers, fancy drinks. And we would not have had 2 table services at MGM either. But it allowed the flexibility to do so. I am positive that eating frugally we still would have spent about $700 totally, but this way we got to eat like we were on vacation and enjoy it. We took more risks, ordering pork chops in a rasberry glaze (Grand Floridian Cafe) or a salad or appetizer that we normally wouldn't waste money on as we weren't 100% sure we would like it.

So, we would not have spent much more, but we also would have been eating a lot more fast food or not as good for us food.

Nora

Thats my thought "Would we really eat that much food if we weren't on th eplann?" I use voucher last year and found yes you can save money but many times I was ordering stuff I normally would not.

I think you CAN save a great deal but you would REALLY have to plan well.

Thanks Nora. My DDs are 5 and 2 also. i'll be sure to watch next month when we go to see that they don't charge for DD2. I too think we'll be ordering more food than we would normally, but hey, we're on vacation.

That's what I think will be so great about this plan. We very seldom order appetizers and even more rarely order dessert. Even though, we are essentially paying for it, it will be nice to try new things and really eat out like you're on vacation!!! I can't wait!!!

:cheer2: :cheer2: Thank you for your exciting reviews....I also used the plan in January and thought it was the best thing Disney every came up with. I also enjoyed being able to eat whatever I wanted and not worrying about watching my spending.

I recently purchase an AP but decided to keep my PS arrangements as is. I will basically eat 1 counter service, 1 table service, and 1 snack a day just like I would if I hadn't switched my MYW plus dining to an AP room only reservation. I haven't purchased the DDE card yet but plan to do so once I active my "green cards" tommorrow.

I leave tomorrow and will defintely post a comparison on value savings from January 05' MYW plus dining versus May 05 AP rate with DDE.

I think (just my opinion) those who are still reluctant to use the plan and stuggling we the "upfront" cost of the plan. Some budgets just do not allow for that extra cash upfront...but the bonus of it is you don't have to worry about spending or being hungry. You don't have to worry about the extra bill when you return home because its prepaid.

Thanks again for sharing your reviews! 17 hours until we leave :cheer2:

Here is the breakdown for those interested... Long, complicated and unless you've been there, maybe totally meaningless, LOL.

April 22 - arrive, ate McD's before check in - cash of $26.75 (the reason I say it would have cost us close to $700 w/o the plan!)

April 23 - bought 2 suvie mugs $25.54 cash
*Bfast at Old Port Royale $26.34
2 Isle of Bounty Platters, 2 Choc milks, 1 strawberry bowl, 1 mixed fruit bowl
*Lunch @ Lottawatta Lodge (Blizzard Beach) - $10.53
chicken strip basket, choc chip cookie, juice box
*Dinner @ Shutters (Carribean Beach) $144 (excellent waitress and food, she kinda fudged the system)
there was so much food here!! We ended up having 4 appetizers - the Trio of dips with bread, Crab Cake, Island Wings and I had a salad that had a yummy dressing. My dh had a shake, I had an Ocean Potion (non alcoholic red, white and blue drink) and the girls split a milkshake. For main course we had Prime Rib, the girls got to split an adult version cause the waitress was so cool, the Salmon and dh had the Prime Rib too. Dessert was a brownie sundae, a chocolate banana Napolean flourless cake, and the Banana bread pudding. Wow, lots of food and so good.
April 24th
*Breakfast (similar to day before but cinnamon roll and zucchini bread as desserts) $24.22
*snack cart at Animal kingdom, strawberry popsicle $2.50
*snack at Old Port Royale - OJ $1.80
*snack cart at Animal Kingdom - 2 Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bars $5
*Dinner - Whispering Canyon Cafe - $107.02, was billed for 2 yr old's milk shake (they are suppossed to be refillable, although I finished mine I was never offered a refill at all and used that as an argument for hers to be free.) I got the skillet and shared it with the 5 yr old, 2 yr old dd got a kid's meal hot dog, dh got the ribs, service was slow, and it did not live up to the hype at all. Our dd's were so tired and the service so bad we asked for desserts to go. Took them 15 min to bring out the check, which was wrong, than another 20 minutes to get it fixed. :sad2:

April 25th
*Chef Mickey's for Breakfast $55.86, at first my dh was not happy. He didn't expect a buffet, thought the food was average, not table service quality. I disagreed, loved the chicken spinach egg dish. But then the napkin waving, singing and characters came out and that was worth every penny. Our 2 year old almost didn't make it to the potty on time cause a character came by the table and she would not leave until she got to see him. Luckily someone let her hop in front!
*Cosmic Ray's Starllight Cafe in Magic Kingdom - $12.65 and $19.78 (2 seperate lines)
I got the 1/2 chicken and ribs platter, dh got the double cheeseburger. Got milk for the girls, and we split a Large coke. ONLY time they let a large coke get rung up on the plan... We also got choc cake and carrot cake which were ok but we were glad they were "free".
*Snack Carts - water, water, root beer, coke, ice cream, ice cream $13.25

no dinner, we were full. Paid cash for some frozen cokes and frozen lemonades at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom the days we were there.

April 26
*Breakfast $25.49
Isle Bounty, pancakes w/ sausage and 2 sausage on the side, 2 pineapple cups, 2 juice boxes. Again, lots depends on the cashier w/counter service it seems, later we tried to do the sausage side thing and they argued w/us but eventually did it.
*Lunch - Tuskers at Animal Kingdom $21.15, rare occassion that we got the kid's meal, but dh wasn't hungry for the food there and *I* was so he lost. Got me the Salmon and omg it was so good! It came with rice and fresh green beans. Got the kids a Mac and Cheese kid's meal, 2 fruit cups, choc milk and choc chip cookies (I think!). Also got a coke.
*Dinner - counter service at Old Port Royale. $12.54 We stayed for extra magic hours at Animal Kingdom and since they didn't have a Table service there, we just did a counter service in the hotel. DH got a pizza w/salad and breadsticks on the side and zucchini bread as dessert. We got the kids choc milk and used our refillable mugs.
*Snacks - 2 Rice Crispie Mickey's, M&M cookie $4.88 and $2.87

April 27
*Breakfast $13, girls had granola bars and left over fruit cups and milks in the room, dh had Isle Bounty at the hotel

*Lunch at hotel again, $24.54 Philly Cheesesteak, Chicken Strip basket, cake, muffin and choc milks

*dinner Grand Floridian Cafe. $103.42 We had reservations at Narcossee's since we had skipped a table service the day before. But when we got there and read over the menu, there was NOTHING on it we would have eaten. So, we left. We decided to check the Cafe and see if they could seat us, and we got a table instantly. We were SO PLEASED with the food and service!! The girls split a kid's appetizer of grapes and cheese (cut into Mickey shapes). They also split an apple juice and the Kid's Triple Header, which was a mini hamburger, mini hotdog and mac and cheese. I had the House Salad - it had pears, pecans and cranberries on it, and was fabulous. Came in an edible bowl too. DH got chicken noodle soup, which did not impress him as it hardly had any chicken. For dinner I had the Pork Tenderloin in a cranberry glaze and it was SO GREAT. Yum. DD5 ended up eating lots of it. DH had the NY Strip. For dessert he had the chocolate mousse, I split the Chocolate Fondue with dds and the other dd had choc icecream. We were prepared to pay for the Fondue, but it went through fine. This is a must do place imo! It was weird though when he gave us the dessert menu, Fondue was not on it. I had seen it on the front posted menu so asked for it.

April 28th
*Breakfast at Cinderella's Royal Table. $68.01. Wonderfully intimate and superb food. The setting was magical and I totally see why it is a must do and sells out so quick! My younger dd was sure for the rest of the trip that the characters there KNEW her personally. I loved the little cheese and blueberry pastry they had. It was hard to eat though with all the autographs and pictures.
*snack cart - lemonade $2.12

for lunch we tried to use a counter service at the Main Street Bakery, but decided it was really throwing it away as it was limited menu. So we paid cash for an apple dessert and a HUGE cinnamon bun. That was one of hte best buns I have ever had. In fact all the pastries throughout DW seemed to be superior to any I have had. Very yeasty and flavorful.

*dinner - Yacht Club Galley $111.03. Again it was like the guy knew his tip was guarrenteed so didn't give good service. Asked for water 3 times and never got it. (same thing had happened at our bad Whispering Canyon night). We got the chips w/cheese as an appetizer and he said it was "small - get 2 if that is all you are getting". It was NOT small. We didn't even touch the second one and still had 1/2 the first left. I got a Ceaser Salad too. I had the Pork Chops (yummy!), dh got the Rotisseire Chicken and dd2 ate the hot dog kid's meal. (other dd ate some of my meal). We tried the Hoist the Flag drink and the Blue Rasberry Fizz drink. Another time of a dessert being up front but not offered - the dessert sampler. I got it only cause we saw it up front and I asked. Dh got ice cream (would never have spent $5 for a bowl of ice cream!) and dd5 got the Mickey Painting Puzzle desset (white chocolate puzzle you paint w/frosting and a cup cake). This was the meal where he rang the guest count as 4 cause we had 4 people even though we only ordered 3 meals.... Irritating way to end a bad service but good food meal.

We had reached $730 by this point, so anything after this point was all "bonus".

Friday April 29
*Breakfast - hotel again $22.15 Isle Bounty Platter, Mickey Waffle (kid's meal) w/sausage, coffee cake, cheese Danish, choc milk, OJ
*Snack cart - $2.12 (hmm, what was this?? Oh, a cinnamon bun I think, they didn't want to do it, ended up ringing it up as a banana instead so we could get it)
*snack cart at MGM - coke, pop corn $5
*snack cart - rice crispy treat $2.50
*Lunch at 50s Prime Time Cafe - $79.84 Boursin Cheese appetizer, coke and root beer floats, shakes for the girls. Fried Chicken, Pot Roast, kid's chicken nuggets. Dad's Sundae, Banana Split and Kid's Build a Sundae. Fabulous food, wonderful service and atmosphere! We only got one appetizer as we were not that hungry.
*Dinner at Sci Fi Drive in Theatre $64.26 We got both kid's meal appetizers - the fruit and cheese one and the veggie and dip one. Plus we got a spinach/artichoke dip w/chips appetizer. 2 cokes, and apple juice to split between the girls. Main course was 2 Ribs and a kid's hot dog meal. Service was beyond slow. So, in order not to miss Fantasmic we got our desserts (cookies) to go. Would have like different desserts, but not possible with transporting them.

April 30th
*Breakfast at hotel again $8.07 and $23.45 zucchini bread, kid's meal pancakes w/sausage, apple juice. Isle of Bounty Platter, French Toast w/sausage, pineapple, (2), choc milk and apple juice.
*Lunch @ Typhoon Tyllies at Typhoon Lagoon $12.02 and $11.05, chicken strips basket, cookie, coke, BBQ sandwich, cookie, coke.

*Dinner @ Concourse Steakhouse - $101.46. Our older dd slept through dinner :cloud9: , too worn out. We had gotten priority seating that morning, and when we went in we were 15 min late for our time. The person in front of us was told 1.5 hour wait. We were seated in less than 10 minutes!! We are not seafood lovers, so this could have been lots more money. We got the Sesame Wings Appetizer (GREAT!), and a Ceaser Salad. (could have gotten one more, but nothing else interested us). Dinner was Ribs, Prime Sirloin, and a Kid's Meal Chicken Breast. Dessert, omg, yum. DH had ice cream, I had the Cappacino Cheesecake which came with a beautiful chocolate sculpture. Dd2 got a Mickey Brownie w/ice cream that had mickey sprinkles on it.

Last Day May 1
*Breakfast @ hotel again. $23.26 and
*snack - 4 Rice Crispy Treats to take home $11.46

*lunch Pop Century Food Court (we had already checked out and decided to try it out) -$36.81 Parmesan Chicken w/noodles and breadstick, Double Cheeseburger, Chicken Basket. Watermelon Bowl, Tye Die Cheesecake, pudding, lemonade, 2 cokes. Saved 1/2 the chicken and fries and pudding for the plane ride home which worked perfectly.
*snack- 5 more rice crispy Mickey's to use up the last of them.

Wow, that took a long time to write out.

Fantastic Report, thanks so much for taking the time! Sounds like you had some incredible meals!

I love dining plan reports! Thanks for sharing your experience! :)

For those who are wondering if the plan encourages you to eat/buy more than you would otherwise, I offer this:

We went to WDW for the first time in January. We were there for four days. The dining plan had JUST been introduced and we would have had to fool around too much with our ressies to add it in.

When we came home I sat down with our receipts and made a chart of what our credits WOULD have been with the dining plan. Eating exactly what we ate ANYWAY we would have come out over $150 ahead if we had the plan. And that was just over the course of four days!

We are going in October for eight days, and this time we do have the dining plan. I can't wait!!

It is good to read how everyone is using the plan since I've purchased it for our June trip. Great report! :goodvibes

So did you use the Childs CS meals as adult meals? I'm still confused about the MYW dinning plan, although our resies includes the plan :confused3 . I just wanted to clarify that one point. I can see that it is an awsome deal, though, and I'm glad I had it included! If you could just explain how you used your childs meals, it might help me to understand better. We are going to be DH (coming in from Iraq just for WDW!!! ), Me, DS 4, DD 18 mo. Thanks for the help! :flower:

Wonderful review!

You mentioned two things that I cannot find on the menus at allearsnet.com You said your kids had a vegetable and dip appetizer (kid size?) at Sci-Fi, and a make your own sundae at 50's prime time. Are there other restaurants that are now offering kids appetizers? Also, was the sundae at 50s where they bring out a bunch of little cups with toppings, and the kids make their own, or do they actually walk up to a sundae bar somewhere in the restaurant?

Betty

"So did you use the Childs CS meals as adult meals? "

answer - yes. At counter service they don't care what type of credit it is, it is just a credit. So, for breakfast we would bet 2 adult meals and with the dessert item (danish, cinnamon roll, muffin, fruit, banana or zucchinni bread) and the drink it was easily enough to split with both kids. They didn't care whose counter service credit it was, just counted it as a credit used.
