Dining Plan Sucks!

Title might be harsh but it is frustrating. My wife was in tears last night. I am paying some serious cash for this vacation. I tried character breakfasts and they are all booked too!!! How do I make reservation at resort restaurants?

Everyone there is paying serious cash for their vacations too. The amount of money you spend doesn't make you special. You should have planned a little more ahead.

If you go back to disney I would suggest you and your wife do a lot more research into ADR's. Before my 90 days out I make a list of the restaurants I want to eat at, the day and the time i prefer. THis makes it very simple when I call to make my ADR's.
Also, I agree with the last post. We ALL pay a LOT for our disney vacations. If you are paying $1000 or $10000+ Disney does not care. THey do not give an advantage to the people who are spending the most $. But I do feel like good preperation, research and a friendly personality is helpful everytime i call Disney.
I also agree to try the resort hotels, we have enjoyed many, many delicious meals at Resort restaurants.

Hi Fire, I do agree with your post (but I think it sucks for other reasons, and there is no need to go OT now:lmao:)....I will give you some advice that I hope will be helpful. First, if you are staying on-site, speak to the concierge at your hotel and see if they can look for cancellations for you and book things as they come up, we did that last year and got into a couple of things that we didn't think we could get. Also, usually, the Cape May Cafe will get you in if you go early enough for breakfast (we have often gone without a reservation and then they took us without waiting too much). Lastly, try to get in early to the restaurants, especially at Epcot, and you have a chance. Generally, I have found certain places very accomodating, even without reservations, it just depends on how you approach them. If you are resourceful you will get in to something. Just keep your cool, don't panic, and whatever happens, don't let it ruin your trip. After all, you will not starve!!! ;) I know that it is a different experience and you were both looking forward to it, but don't give up. The Mexican Restaurant is usually good about getting you in also without reservations....there are places....just be prepared to walk around and find one that will take you and go early! (Next time, plan to make reservations 90 days out, I just read another thread where the poster was going to be setting up at 3 am to make reservations at 6 am!). Good luck.
Have a great trip!

I just searched quickly and found a dinner and a breakfast time at Cape May. We really enjoyed breakfast there. I agree with others to keep checking on your preferences in case someone cancels, but first you should just book SOMETHING for your ADRs. It may not be your first choice, but you may be pleasantly surprised, too. If something opens up you can change, but best to have somewhere to go. Cape May is nice because you can walk there or take a boat from Epcot.

I was up and on the phone dialing at 6:59:55 a.m. on my 90 day call in. I got every single restaurant that I wanted, not every time but close. Then I went on the online system for the next 89 days and changed everything except 2 meals out of 9. So yes, people do cancel-I did! Oh yeah, one more thing... The next time also keep in mind that if you book your ADRS online, they will start up at 6:00 a.m., so you can get a jump on folks calling in at 7:00.

Just wanted to add that a lot of people who were online at 6am on their 90 days out couldn't get the popular restaurants...

OP, there are restaurants available during your trip. :) Every restaurant is not booked solid...like the rest of us, you need to be flexible with your times & days, and pick from the restaurants that are available. You will have a wonderful time no matter where you end up eating.

I agree w/ everyone else, too, to keep trying online for the next week until you go & then call every morning to see if anything you really wanted opened up. People do make last minute cancellations. You might get lucky and call at just the right time!

Good luck & have FUN!!

I'm sure there are a lot of openings if you play with the online reservation system.
Go to Disney's website and go to Dining reservations under the BOOK tab.
If something you request isn't available, it will give you alternative options to choose from.

Commonly open things are Rose & Crown and Tokyo Dining at EPCOT, Kona Cafe at the Polynesian resort (an easy monorail ride from MK), Olivia's at Old Key West.

There are also some really good CS meals available...Captain Cookes at the Poly and most of the countries in Epcot have great and unique choices.

You might be hard pressed to get a character meal this late, but you can keep trying. Some of the Downtown Disney resorts that are not owned by Disney host Character meals. They will not be included on the dining plan. I believe there is also a character meal at the Swan.
For a list of complete menus and prices and options to chose from, check out this menu list...
http://allears.net/menu/menus.htm

You will get some good meals. Tell your wife it will be ok.
There's a lot to do at Disney besides eat.

The Wave at the Contemporary is almost always available as well.
It is on the monorail line so it is also easily accessible from MK and EPCOT.
You can even easily walk to it from MK.

It's unfortunate you weren't able to call sooner for your reservations. I don't know if you booked your trip late or you didn't know about advance reservations, but it's tough less than a month away to be booking park restaurants at this time especially character meals. The popular restaurants go very quickly.

Like the other posters have mentioned you will have to keep trying and hope for cancellations for your prime choices. I'm still hoping for one booking to open up for me; so, I look almost everyday on the website for Disney on-line dining and check it religiously and I choose different times, too to see if that will help.

Be flexible with your times. Late dinners I believe can be had at some popular restaurants. Try other choices and book what you can get right now; don't wait. It will only get worse. You can change dinner reservations if a better one comes along later. There are like 100 places to choose from and you'll get some nice places to eat at, even if, they are not your number one choice.

If you are not having a car, it will take some manuevering to go to resort restaurants using Disney transportation. It's doable, but in most instances it will take some time away from the parks going back and forth.

I just booked a couple more ADR's last night - for our trip the week after yours. Picked up 50s primetime for lunch(11:15) & Whispering Canyon (7:10) for dinner -last week added Rainforest Cafe (6pm) & 1900 Park Fare.(10:45A)

Added them all online & 2 of the ressies are for 8 people & 2 are for 6 people.

We added 50s @ last minute & though I couldn't get supper on the day we were there we figuerd we'd eat a light b'fast & have a good lunch & then have either CS or snacks for supper that night...no biggie - same experience.

Of course its frustrating if you wanted CRT - that's about immpossible to get - and that's even when you call 90 days out -

I was also later than I would have like making my reservations because my hubby just came in one day and had decided it was time for Disney! I was able to get ADRs at all of our choices except one! I just became more flexible on my times and kept trying! I wasn't trying to wait until the last minute, we just decided to go a few weeks out. It will take some time and effort, but I know that you will be able to find some great places! I was just able to change one of my ADRs today so that we can have dinner with some friends (we will have a party of 9) at Cape May, so I know that there are still some spots open out there! Good Luck and have a great time at Disney!:)

Try online. You might also try again, ask the CM to check for a meal at any restaurant in Epcot, Mk, etc. Also check when you get there. Keep the number handy and keep trying.

I would not depend on walk-up. Many restaurants have signs that say "reservation only".

I sympathicize - I just booked last week for the week after yours and have found the main recommended restaurants - Le Cellier, CRT, Coral Reef, and Tutto Italia - all booked. We're late to this. Our trip was a last minute idea. Which restaurants are you looking for?

So now, I'm looking for other restaurants that may be overlooked and have interesting menus. Fortunately, my kids are too young to care about character dining too much. I was able to book The Wave at the Contemporary and Kona Cafe at Poly. There was a lot of availability for those. BTW, if anyone has other recommendations I'm all ears

Just want to reiterated that flexibility is key! We will be at WDW at the same time as you and started planning last month, so initially all the "good" places were gone. I went ahead and booked something for everyday (don't want any of those TS credits to go to waste!!:rotfl2:) and then kept searching. Now I have made and cancelled dozens of ADRs and come up with almost everything my family of 6 wanted but not at the absolute perfect time :scared1::hippie: in some instances. At this point, I plan to sit back and relax and enjoy being in the WORLD!! Good luck!!

To the OP:

Very sorry for your frustration with ADRs. I tend to agree with you. Free dining changes all the dynamics.

Just a few thoughts you may want to consider for dinner. These are a bit harder to get to, since they are at the resorts rather than the parks, but worth a try anyway.

1. Turf Club at Saratoga Springs Resort. We had a lovely lunch here, and I would think dinner is nice, too. Tasty food, and a bit more civilized atmosphere than most places.

2. Grand Floridian Cafe. Very nice atmosphere and tasty food. Easy to reach by monorail from MK.

3. Olivia's Cafe at Old Key West.

4. Marakesh at the Morocco Pavilion in Epcot. For some reason this restaurant often doesn't fill up. Perhaps because the food is a bit exotic. There is live music and a belly dancer. We enjoy it.

5. Wolfgang Puck Cafe at Down Town Disney.

6. Maya Grill at Coronado Springs Resort.

7. Captain's Grill at Yacht Club.

8. Garden Grill Restaurant at the Land Pavilion at Epcot. This is a character meal. It can be less crowded than some as you have to be in Epcot to do it. Most people prefer character meals at the resorts.

9. Lilo & Stitch Breakfast at Ohana. This is a very fun character breakfast. Sometimes you can get in if you book late morning, such as 11:00 a.m. We like it better then as it's less crowded with better character interaction.

10. Try for Cinderella's Royal Table at 3 days and then 2 days before you'd like to dine there. Reservations have to be cancelled 48 hours before or the party incurs a penalty, so sometimes you can nab an ADR due to a cancellation. Try for lunch, which is less popular than breakfast. Dinner is less popular than lunch because you don't have the princesses. It does take 2TS credits.

11. Yachtsman Steakhouse. Takes 2TS credits, but steaks are great. You'll have a really nice meal here.

Just my thought for some possibilities. Good luck.

And I suggest Sanna at AKL Villas. Good food and very relaxing to watch the animals while dining. :cutie:
Just over a week ago DH and I had a very good lunch at Olivia's. I have never had a bad meal there. But their special was very yummy that day. Better than I expected. :thumbsup2

ElizabethB - Thanks for the great list!

Have you dined at your #5 below (the Wolfgang Puck Cafe)? It's available for one of my dates - trying to figure out if the food would be good. Thanks!

I totally understand your frustration and I'd like to help! Let us know what you want (restaurant, date, time, party size). You may not get exactly what you first requested but this board is an intelligent, resourceful board and can really help!

I don't have a lot of other advice. I am curioius to know what dining plan you are on. Was it free promotion? If it was then I would try to book more 2 TS meals. Hey if it is free you may as well dine in style, right? If you aren't on any dining plan, although it sounds as if you are, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I would look at non dining plan restaurants like Rain Forest Cafe and restaurants at the Swan and Dolphin.

Please post what happens and if you were able to work out a solution.

Wishing you the best. :goodvibes I know planning meals 90 days out throws some people for a loop. I couldn't believe it either when I started planning my first trip.

If the OP would tell us which restaurants they couldn't get, maybe we can suggest some specific alternatives.

All the suggestions here have been great, by the way; and I noticed the OP asked how they'd go about making dining reservations at the resort (on page 1, maybe?). Exactly the same way you did the first time - call 1-407-393-9469.
