We discovered out 4 year old son is severly allergic to pistachios when he an anaphylactic reaction last Fall after eating 3 nuts. As a result we avoid all tree nuts/peanuts and carry a double dose of epinephrin. So this means NO baked goods at all.

We went last Fall and I had emailed Brenda (I think that was her name) and she had been MOST helpful. I will dig her up again...

But I was wondering if anyone found places helpful in desserts for these kids? At Mama Melroses the chef was a doll, gloved up and opened a brand new vanilla icecream to be sure there was no cross/contamination. Served it to my son himself. I LOVED that.

This time we are trying Kona Cafe and Concourse which both have cookies listed for the kids desserts. Do you think they will help out?

TIA!

Oh, I know I will be calling the places once we arrive in September, just thinking ahead...

Your best bet is to, when you make dining reservations, make sure they include in the notes the comment "food allergies". It does not hurt to call the resturant about a day before. When you check in at the podium, remind them of this. Also be sure your server is aware. Usually you don't even have to ask, but a Chef will coime out and discuss the allergies with you. You wioll be told what is and is not safe. Also, dishes can be prepared to conform with the dietary restricitons and often a special dish will be prepared.

we were able to get a sub dessert *EVERYWHERE* we went w/a peanut/tree nut allergic child... we had itzakadoozie ice pops (that the server at garden grill ran out and got from a vendor supposedly!) and fresh made safe ice cream sundaes w/hidden mickey whipped cream and rice dream w/candy (opened just for us by the chef) on top and just the marshmallow on a stick portion of the kids' s'mores dessert at lecellier (ds LOVED this!) and so many other good fun safe desserts!

you should be fine :)

We went this past Feb with my DS (6) who has a severe allergy to tree nuts. We found that there was always a dessert for him, though he often did not have much of a choice. IE: at the Concourse Steakhouse (which is terrific btw), he had ice cream (the cookies etc were all too much of a risk). Ice cream was always around though, so he did get something.

Definately make sure that its noted on any of your ADR's that he has a severe allergy. And prep him so he knows that he needs to talk to you before eating any dessert, make sure you carry something he likes just in case and let him know that he can have that OR whatever he is offered by the restaurant (we always carry emergency oreos).

After dealing with this crappy allergy for nearly 5yrs (DS is 6 and his first reaction was from placing 1 cashew in his mouth and then spitting it out- and still went into anaphalxis), Disney is the only place where we felt that DS was treated wonderfully.

At Kona DD was given a cloud of cotton candy as a substitute dessert because of a milk protein intolerance.

We've had mostly good luck in getting a different dessert for my son William who is 4 yrs old. Besides the peanut/tree nut allergy he is diabetic but we are usually fine with regular desserts for him. Cotton candy wouldn't work so well though - I'd be afraid to try that with the diabetes!

Our least favorable experience was Chef Mickey's - the only thing they had was plain ice cream. They said ALL of the sprinkles were "may contains" and no they could not get any that were not. He generally does not eat ice cream so this was a bust for him. The only places we usually look for a dessert in the restaurant is a buffet. He usually has preferred eating dessert a bit later and getting an Itskadoozie bar from an ice cream cart.

Biergarten, Le Cellier (made him a really cool from scratch dessert), Crystal Palace and LTT were all fine for him dessert-wise. Do be sure to raise any concerns with Brenda Bennett when you call about dining - she is very helpful. :thumbsup2

I was just wondering about this too and hoped someone had done the DDP and had no problems with it. I even posted a ? about it on the DDP forum.

I'm mostly wondering about desserts, I usually forgo them because of my allergies (eggs, tree/peanuts, bananas, & now-pineapple, mango, coconut, guava & passionfruit) and the lack of any good choices.

Because the plan includes dessert do you think that I should be making a call to each TS restaurant to be sure that they'll have something for me ahead of time? I always not the info on my PS info and do let them know at the check-in desk so that the chef comes over to speak w/me, but wondering if they'd need more specific info and I should be telephoning?

My trip this past Jan included them calling me a few days before we left for every ADR I had!

Disney is pretty good about most allergies...

but I have some strange ones - pepper, rye, oats.... that are not on their tracking system...

so most of my trips have included a kitchen or kitchennett....

if I fix it I know what is in it..... ;)

although all the chefs I have talked too have been just GREAT....

I am tree nut/peanut allergic, and Boma, Kona, and Cape May were the three places I felt uncomfortable ordering dessert--The first two are nut nightmares.

At Boma we felt the service from both the server and chef were terrible as far as dealing with my allergies. Instead of offering to make me a chicken breast, they pointed out the things I couldn't eat on the buffet--everything but pap, and then told me "No dessert for you!" like it was a big joke.

As far as Cape May, they seemed to not care about allergies and don't get it as far as cross contamination--when I asked to have desserts brought fresh from the kitchen they seemed VERY put out.

Anne-yeah I think I remembered a report where you mentioned the poor response at Boma & Kona.

I have to say that I had a terrific response at Cape May for dinner at the clambake. I'm also allergic to mussels and oysters but can have every other shellfish. They called me once at home before I left and again at my resort on the day of our ADR to confirm that we were coming. When we arrived the chef walked me thru the buffet but also told me that they were making me a separate serving of the shrimp & clams because the others (on the buffet) were not safe. The chef then came out repeatedly to make sure if I wanted more so he could prepare them separately.

However, for dessert, I had to ask the server, who then brought the chef back (after a long wait because he had to stop/show about 4-5 other parties with food allergies what they could have) and he ended up bringing me some plain vanilla ice cream with fresh berries. Nice, but just ok.

I guess I'm not hoping for anything outstanding, but would really like to enjoy a dessert or 2 during the 9 day trip. Even Rice Dream would be better than nothing!
