dining plan JUST to have it already paid for?

I use to be in the same boat of buying it just for the ease of knowing it was already paid for until after this last trip. Went for thanksgiving and had 11 unused quick service meals our last day... Down graded to snacks just to use them but I realized we don't eat enough to make this worth it. One ts a day then a few snacks and we are good... I like the for the ts to be lunch or late breakfast and it holds us all day...

So for my next trip I have a new idea I got here (I love DIS)... I figured out how much it would be to buy the dining plan and I am buying that much worth of disney gift cards.... Now if by the end of the trip I haven used all the money I can buy cool things like mugs and t-shirts and not just chips and fruit :cool1:

With the ability to charge all of my meals on my band, there's no need for the dining plan for us this trip. I normally love the dining plans for the ease, but we're doing too many TS meals for the DDP and not enough to justify the DxDP. This time, I'm saving $100/person by not doing it. Plus, my DMom is now a diabetic and I'd prefer not to tempt her with a dessert that she will feel obligated to order and eat.

We did the DDP our last two trips. It worked for us at the time because we did tons of character meals with two kids.

Now it won't work for us. We don't eat dessert at every meal. Sometimes we like to do mostly appetizers for our meal. DD is going to be 9 but she gets sick of kid offerings. We don't do as many character meals. We don't want to fill up our schedule with ADR's this trip so we plan on making some day of ADR's. I wouldn't want to take the risk of not eating TS that day and losing out on a credit. I don't want to play catch up with credits during my trip.

I have no issue paying for convenience. At all. I do it in real life often as a full time working mom. But I'm not going to pay for the convenience of the DDP when it has so many restrictions. There's not enough ease. Maybe if we could switch the dessert for an app or choose an app as our entree I wouldn't mind it.

Now I will have the ease of charging my meal to my Magic Band and paying off my balance every 2-3 days at the front desk.

I think like a lot of things it depends if you're able to stomach the costs up front. I'm hoping at some point we travel during free dinning and get to experience it but unless that happens I doubt we'll do a dinning plan. We go into our trips looking to save as much money as possible while still having a wonderful time. Last trip we packed one meal, had one in the hotel and only purchased one meal a day. Knowing that we were only spending money on one meal per day made me feel all right ordering whatever but we also didn't feel forced into ordering anything we didn't want at a restaurant.

I do think if we go back when the kids are teenagers then the dinning plan might be a must since we'd probably do a lot of buffets. At four and two they eat quite a bit compared to other kids their ages so I'm nervous how much they're going eat when they get bigger.

I am going to WDW for the first time in May 2015 and I am getting the dining plan. We are NOT big eaters and probably won't break even but I do love the all inclusive feel to it. Also, if I don't get the dining plan I know that I will be looking over the menu and I will opt for the cheaper choice and I won't get a drink etc.. with the dining plan I can just order what I want, even if it is the most expensive option and it won't matter.

I feel exactly the same way! I just want to order and not worry about the prices.

Honestly, it depends on the person/family using it. It's good for some and not good for others.

As I look through the responses given thus far, I noticed something curious. It seems as though a lot of the people in favor of the DDP have been more recent visitors to WDW. I am basing this observation on the signatures listing trip dates.

However, as someone who visited more than 10 years ago when the DDP really was a deal, I find it hard to justify the cost now. As recently as 2004, the DDP included your appetizer, entrée, dessert, non-alcoholic beverages, and gratuity and only cost $35-$40 per adult per day. Yes, I did say it included the gratuity! It was so convenient that you didn't even have to think about leaving a tip. And there was no charge for a missed ADR.

Then they began taking things away, while at the same time increasing the price. For example, gratuity was no longer included (accept for dinner shows), then appetizers were no longer included, then some restaurant locations began opting out of the program or limiting entrée choices available to those on the DDP. Then, after all that, Disney decided to charge more for the DDP during certain times of the year (holidays, summer, etc.). Now it can cost more than $60 per adult per day, plus you have to pay gratuity, and that can add up (especially if your whole party orders the most expensive entrée on the menu).

Nowadays you really need to take into account the way you like to eat. Are you a dessert person? Do you sometimes prefer to eat an appetizer instead of an entrée? Do you drink alcoholic beverages?

I know some people have mentioned that they like to have dessert on vacation, even if they don't usually have it at home, or they would be reluctant to get the most expensive entrée due to price if they were paying OOP. I completely understand that thought process, and I have been there.

But I dare to say for every person who says that, there is someone else who says they don't like feeling like they have to order the most expensive entrée to feel as though they got their monies worth, when they really would have preferred something else, but didn't get it because they thought about how much they already paid OOP for the DDP.

I really think it might be helpful for you to take a look at the menus for the restaurants you plan to eat at and honestly consider what you would order, add up the cost, and see what works best for you. But when making the comparison, don't forget to add the cost of gratuity to both the DDP and OOP options.

And if you have children, don't forget to consider what they like to eat. Are they the type of kids that would be happy eating chicken tenders, burgers, and mac and cheese for every table service meal? If so, great. But if your child enjoys eating the same type of food you do, the DDP may not be for you (unless you are going to all buffet meals). Just some food for thought.

If you still aren't sure, ask yourself this question: Is the DDP flexible enough for my family to be considered convenient?

If you believe the DDP is not for you, and you are either a FL resident, Annual Passholder, or DVC Member, I would highly recommend TIW. The cost is about $125 for FL residents and $100 for AP/DVC. It can be used to cover up to 8-10 people in your party, but the card holder must pay the bill. It is 20% discount on entire bill (including alcoholic beverages). It can be used at most TS restaurants, but the only QS locations it can be used at are usually the resort food courts. It cannot be used at QS locations in the parks. TIW card holders also get complimentary valet parking at resorts when dining at resort restaurant and free parking at theme park when dining at park restaurant.

Hope this info helps! Have a great vacation!!!

We are doing the QS dining plan. I am guessing we will break even. I am the kind of person (everyday) that if I go to a restaurant and KNOW that we have spent money on other stuff I will order something cheaper instead of what I truly want. I find that I do this in WDW. A burger is 1.00+ cheaper then grilled chicken so I get the burger instead. Do that 16+ meals and that is me. I like the guilt free ordering because it is paid for...and it makes MORE sense to order the expensive stuff to get the value of the plan. :goodvibes
