Good day,
I have been reading the forum off and on for a while now and daily for the past month or so. Doing research for our 1st trip to the Fort, in September. I haven't been to disney since the mid '80's, and my wife has never been. We'll be bringing our DS who's 8 and our DD who's 6.
We will be staying for 9 nights over Labour Day and have a 4 day pass to the parks.
We will want to do lunch at the Castle, Hoop De Doo, and possibly Mickey's backyard BBQ.

I have a question about dining reservations. I know I will have to book the lunch with Cinderella as soon as my reservation window opens, but what about the other two options? Can I book those when we arrive or should I do them sooner?

We also want to head over to Cape Canavral for a day trip and want to be flexible.

What do you experts think?

I would go ahead and make the reservations as soon as you can and then change or cancel them if your plans change and if the new day or time is available.

I would book them too...HDDR can get booked up fast and if you want your choice of times, it's best to do it as soon as possible.

I agree with the others, book as soon as your 180 day window opens, if you leave it to chance you may be disappointed.

FYI: There's a Guest Services window at the Settlement. You can walk up on the day you'd like to go (without reservations) and they will attempt to seat you. We've done that the last several times we went to HDDR and the Backyard BBQ and have been able to get in every time. (It's good to know if you don't like to be locked into a tight schedule completely based on dinner reservations).

Since you'll be there on a holiday weekend I would advise making your reservations as soon as possible for HDDR. It's a popular show and your kids will love (and understand) the corny humor.

Mickey's Backyard BBQ is popular but I don't know how often it's a hard sell-out.

BTW, we've been to the Cape for the tour and they often sell out for their bus tours. Since you'll be there on a holiday weekend again, you may want to get things reserved while you still can. It was son neat - I'm sorry the shuttle program is finished but I understand why.

The fact that you'll be there over a holiday weekend changes things in my answers. I'd much rather tell you to be free and easy, unscheduled and relaxed. But since it's Labor Day, well, .....

as others have said - Holiday Weekend = book as soon as your reservation window opens up.

As of this afternoon the Shuttle program was not finished. In fact in the post launch news conference one of the panel members said there would be two more launches. I had thought there would be only one. Of course he could have made a slip of the tongue when he said two...or he could have disclosed a confidence that was not for the public.
