I'm looking to upgrade my pocket digital and get something heavy-duty and crisp. I also have a film Rebel SLR and like the brand so I researched and found the Canon Rebel XT 8mp. It seems to get good reviews. Anyone have or know anything about it?

Tell me you have and if you recommend it. I don't think I want to spend more than $1,000, but I will go up to $1,500 if it's worthwhile.

One last thing, if you have any examples of pictures shot with your camera, I would love to see them!!

TIA!

Hiya,

My DFi upgraded from a Canon G5 to a Nikon D70 SLR only a few weeks ago. He is loving it and planning to do a course in digital photography to get the most out of it.

I will try to get him to post some pictures this evening, in work right now :)

Good luck with your decision :)

Can I piggy back with some questions too? i'm leaning towards the Rebel XT too. Is it hard to use. Is there an automatic mode or several auto mode (like the sports mode) I do a lot of recreational shooting and don't want to spend ages setting up each shot. I had a 35mm Rebel years ago and the manual focus drove me batty when using the camera for shooting snapshots.

thanks

I have the Canon 10D (now it is the 20D) and I love it!!! Compared it with the Nikon and the Canon Rebel, and none could compare! Nikon is great, but it still cannot beat Canon in the DSLR category... they make a slightly better lens (I think) but the camera itself, I love Canon by far! The lack of noise at higher ISO is outstanding compared to Nikon.

I have a bunch of pics I have taken over time... actually all I use now is my DSLR and I sold my past digital cameras.

I would pick the 20D over the Rebel if you can, just a better camera (options & abilities) as well as the processor is better on the 20D if you are willing to go that high.

Here's a link to some WDW pics I just took. You can get an idea of the quality from that. I didn't do any night time shots in this one, but look especially at the last part with the flowers http://www.imagestation.com/album/index.html?id=2125927569
and be sure to look at the original shots for the true quality ;)
And from a cruise I went on http://www.imagestation.com/album/index.html?id=2131112938
that has some cool sunset/sunrise pics to look at... some might be a wee bit crooked, but a boat makes it hard to get a level horizon :p

If you have any questions, let me know (feel free to PM me). I've "grown up" with my digital cameras and put a lot of thought into it before I went to my DSLR!

I bought a Nikon D70 last week. It was a huge splurge for me but I really had and urge to buy. We are having a great time learning how to use it.

In the end I narrowed it down to the Canon Rebel XT and the Nikon. They both are getting fabulous reviews and the prices are very similar. I finally chose the Nikon because my oldest son just bought a Nikon N80 and we can share lenses. I gave my older Olympus Camedia (4MP) to my middle son. I hate to say it but he is taking far better pictures with it than I ever did. :rotfl: We all went to the zoo last week and had a blast. I'll see if I can get a couple of photos uploaded to a Snapfish album later. :)

This is one of my favorite websites. You can see some shots taken with many different cameras here from photographers of all skill levels.

I've been researching digital cameras and have been leaning toward the Nikon D70s. However they're coming out with the Nikon D50 later this month which so far has excellent reviews. Hopefully I'll be able to make a decision soon, because our current digital is kapoot.

I highly recommend the XT. I personally use the older version of it (Rebel non-XT, 6 MP) and to me, the selection of lens for my needs, the availability of vertical grip (VERY useful when taking pictures vertically), relatively low high-ISO noise really tipped the scale.

Nikon lens tend to be on the more expensive side and there is no vertical grip available for both the D50 and D70.

BOTH Nikon and Canon have something called "The Green Zone" which allow you to use the dSLR as if it's a point-and-shoot camera. They both have semi-creative modes such as "Portrait", "Landscape", "Sports", "Night/Slow-sync", "Close-up".

I have the rebel xt and I LOVE it. I have gotten lots of shots of my son playing soccer with the sports mode.

I have the Canon 20d. I looooooooove it! I just got it in June. The only thing I wish is that I had a smaller camera to carry around (it's a little bulky). I am looking at the Canon G3 as I want the lower f2.0 setting (for low light).
It really depends on what you will use the camera for. Go to DpReview.com you will get amazing help in choosing a camera.

I am going to a Los Lonely Boys concert (second row, dead center) next month and I am so jazzed to try it out in the dark but with a lot of action! I have a 80-300mm lens. :D I wanna see nose hairs... OK ok not that bad :rotfl: but I want to see how it is in low light situations. Which is part of the reason I bought this camera. For sunset photos.

I went with the Canon because of the ability to take fast, sharp photos. It takes action shots amazingly. I was looking at Fuji's S3 but it really didn't fit my needs.

Good luck in what ever you choose! Oh check Costcos. I got mine for $1400 (with a lens) and $150 rebate at the time...

You'll love this camera's low-light capability. Use ISO1600, make sure sharpness is set to 0, contrast -1, saturation to 0.

We just got the XT a few weeks ago. So far it's great.

I just wanted to mention that if you already have a Rebel, you can save yourself some $s and only buy the body. I think with shipping we paid around $750 for a body.
