LOL, Hypermommy! Good plan!
Briar, love the colors in your LO. I think the circle kind of overwhelms the pic. Maybe cluster a bunch of elements under/around the pic to pull you back into the pic. Right now the circle is the 1st thing you see, then the pic. KWIM?

You are right! Sometimes I follow a template a little too much to the letter. Your layouts are among some of my favs here, so what do you think . . . should I do flowers or swirls or something else in place of the circle? This is an important picture to me since its the only one I have of me and my mom when I was a baby.

Briar, I was thinking since the kit you used was so grungy, and the journal mat/box is so bright, that they kinda contrast a bit... maybe use a paler but grungy paper for your journal box. It does look great as is, however!

Suzi - For text around a shape, I just usually use smaller blocks of text and place each section by itself. Like for the Pooh song, I did the first part, centered it and then typed the next part of the song on a separate line and centered that, and so forth. If you meant something else, let me know what LO you are referring to. :)

Another way to brighten a dark pic, similar to Wenrob, but a bit different. Here's what I do and it makes your pics softer too.

Place your picture where you want it.
Use the magic wand and select the whole picture.
Add a new layer, so it is on top of the picture.
Fill in the marching ants with white (colorfill).
Remove marching ants.
Play around with the blending and opacity on the white layer to get a look you like. I usually use the soft light option and the opacity will depend on the LO.

I used this technique on this layout:

And the original pic looked like this:

I only wanted a little brightening, not a lot, so I didn't use 100% opacity. :)

Aw, thanks! Looking at it, I would add some swirls on the left side and along the bottom so that some are slightly above the pic and maybe curling over the pic.(you can put your swirl underneath, duplicate it and bring the duplicate to the top and erase what should be underneath, does that make sense?) Then layer some flowers in different sizes, kind of peeking out. Hope this helps!

edited to add: I wouldn't replace the circle, just layer some elements between it and the pic.

Awesome difference Fran! I'm going to have to try that. I have a pic of my eldest that no matter what I do, my backround is too dark. It never occurred to me to use a white layer. Question, when you say your using your magic wand, are you selecting only part of the pic to fill with white or the whole thing?

I've only done the whole pic, but I imagine you could do certain areas with the wand instead.

If you lasso'd certain areas, but it might be easier to do that on separate layers. IE lasso a person out and then just brighten up the whole pic, so you would have 3 layers, the original pic, the white layer on the whole pic and the extraction on top. I said this very poorly, sigh. Hope you get what I mean!

Thanks, Fran. Good idea. I knew you all would help me out!

Thanks, Wen. I'll work on finding doodads that will work.

What can I do to improve it before I put it in my heritage album?

Thanks!

These are the things I would try, I usually end up messing around with my layouts a lot before I'm happy with them!

I'd try making the picture less centered on the page, either by tilting it or just moving it off center a bit. I would also add some embellishments tucked around and under the picture to obscure the circle a little and soften it. As for the journaling box, I'd try lowering the opacity to make it look like green vellum. I think the edges of it are a little harsh the way it is now. Or maybe tearing the edges somehow, but since I don't know how to do that, I'm suggesting the vellum idea!

I don't know how these will look for sure, but if it was my layout, those are the things I'd be messing around with until it all came together for me!

ETA, I added a little link to my digi-scrapping pages on SmugMug to my siggy. in case anyone is interested!

I just realized I had some LO's on my smugmug page that I don't think I shared here yet! Here you go!

This one is made with all Creative Memories stuff:

so is this one:

This one uses a picture I took for the background and the embellishments are all by Britt-ish Designs (of course!).

and this one uses some papers from Sweet Shoppe Designs Desirable Disasters pack for the clouds and raindrops. I'm pretty sure the background paper is Creative Memories. This one is kind of an old-school scrapping throwback with the cut out shapes and cheesy title, but I like it!

Got another one done. This one in response to the SM Walk Down Memory Lane challenge for this week.

I was looking at this thread again and realized that this LO can work for this week's DIS challenge. "so this is love" is a disney song lyric. I think it is from Snow White (?) There you go!

Please don't think I'm hopeless or helpless, I just have embellishment issues! I am usually not one to put a bunch of stuff on my page. I have taken all of the advice so far to heart and made the changes above. Is it better, worse or about the same?

ETA credits:

Bright blue paper: Microferk It’s Showtime kit
Blue paisley and green background paper by Lauren Bavin’s Boldly Blooming Kit
Green paper used for big circle from Kim Liddiard’s Viva Las Vegas kit
Yellow paper for ribbon strips from Lauren Bavin’s Tropical Heat kit
Flowers from Lilach Oren’s The Natural Look kit
Fonts are Cambria and DSP Lemon Meringue
Swirlies by Amanda Thorderson in her Bordeaux kit

I believe that the song "So this is love..." is from Cinderella. My daughter has one of those Princess sing-a-long videos and this is one of the songs on there. Not sure if it really matters... but just in case.

oooh, I totally like it better now. I think I might still make the picture a little bigger and/or slide it a tiny bit to the left. And add a couple of embellies to the right of the picture and tucked under. I love the swirly/dot thing you put on there. It looks great!

Briar, much improved! The only thing I'd do different is make that center flower smaller and/or tuck it under the frame. All the changes you made really make it pop now.

Oh, cool! It was hard to use that as the title of the LO becuase that song absolutely is my feelings towards my DH. But there was no other song that properly expressed my feelings towards my first child.

Cool!!! So I can use it for this challenge? Too excellent! But wait... I thought the pictures had to have something to do with Disney? I'm so confused :confused3 :confused3 :rotfl2:

If I am understanding correctly... I think the Disney part of this challenge is the lyric... so it would be okay not to have Disney pics. She only had the two criteria listed
1. Disney lyric
2. Use something you learned from another Dis'er.

Please, someone correct me if I am wrong. I would have to change my LO idea as well.

I'm thinking the Disney lyric and inspiration from another DIS-er is the disney part this time. I think it might be OK for them not to be Disney pics, but I'd check with Suzi, since she's the hostess this week!

Thanks for all the help ladies! I edited my last post that contained the picture to include the credits. I have made the changes suggested and it looks even better! Thanks again! I replaced the one above with the latest edited version.
