digital film dev. at resorts

I will be going to the Poly in 5 weeks. My camera of choice is my digital, however I hate buying all those memory cards (I use my computer and online photo service to hold my photos-my preference) any way, being that my memory for photos will be limited, I noticed there is film developing at the poly and parks, however is it digital film developing or just regular roll film? Thanks

They have removed (or are in the process of removing) all of their film developing and going to be doing digital only. I think you insert your memory card, and save the images to a disc or something along those lines. I'm not sure if this is available now, or in the near future. There's a thread about it in the Theme Park forum.

The Wdis. line said the resorts might get the digital machines in but did not know when and he said the parks "should" have them. I need to know definate.....I would hate to get there and have to limit my picture taking because I don't have enough memory. I don't think I could afford that many cards for enough memory! LOL The machines are the same ones all the CVS,Genovese, Walmart, and Walgreens have, I can't imagine Disney not having this convenience. thanks

Help does anyone know this answer? does anyone use a digital camera and what do you do? We are staying 7 days and will be taking lots of pictures and will not have anywhere enough memory for that many pics. I will need to find something to do. Any suggestions?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I can tell you what we did on our last WDW trip.

We took our memory stick, which is 128 MB. We took pictures all day (it holds a couple hundred very high resolution). We came back to the hotel and downloaded them to our laptop - our memory stick plugs right into the laptop. Formatted the memory stick and we were ready for the next day.

So, if you have a laptop and bring it you could do the same. We were a little concerned about it not fitting into the safe, so we locked it in our luggage (used luggage locks). Not one single problem- it's not like anyone knew we had it in our luggage anyway!

In the post that I referred you to on another thread all the parks are getting the machines to download your photos. They aren't all installed yet. They will be in the camera center in the park. The parks will get them first then the resorts.

If I were you I would get another memory card anyway in case something happens to the first one while shooting or you lose it. Also if you need to leave the card you don't have one to take more pictures.

The cost off site will still be cheaper so you may want to consider Walgreens, Wal Mart, etc.

When are you going to WDW?

You can buy a 512 MB card on ebay for about 50-60 dollars. That should resolve any issues with number of photos you are able to store. For a few more dollars you can grab a gigobyte card. Well over a thousand hi-res images to store.

Depending on what kind you need, they are even cheaper than that on Amazon.com!

It's nice to have at least one really large memory card if you don't travel with a computer.

Hi. I just got my first 5.1 dig camera for christmas. I have similar concerns. I think I will do a combination of what everyone is advising. I will buy a large capasity stick (I have the small one the camera came with); bring my laptop and download at night. Ithink I am also going to take a regular camera and film and give my girls both disposable cameras. I like scrapbooking and it would break my heart to lose pics.

Folks, let me give you a very important peice of advice: Don't put all your eggs in one basket!

Don't buy a big memory card. Buy several smaller memory cards.

What happens if you lose your camera? What happens if the memory card gets zapped by static, or you drop it into the tub, or one of the kids drops it in the park and steps on it? The more pics you have on a memory card, the more pics you would lose if anything happened to it.

So spread your pics out onto multipe cards, especially if you don't plan on downloading them until you get home. It might just save your precious vacation pics from total disaster!

Thanks webmaster Regina, I guess the cd will be helpful. I would feel more comfortable and safe to get actual pics though, but the cd is better than nothing. I do plan to get a few more memory sticks. I like the small idea, I too am afraid of some weird catastrophe occuring (I have 3 kids weird stuff always happens! ) Now another question....is there a list or any way of finding where these machines will be exactly? Where and which parks (probably all but I would like to know where! can you tell I am a planner!) Even if I can find an offsite place. I am so afraid after I have them put on cd and clear the stick the cd will crack or something if my kids get anywhere near it!! lol

They are going to be in the camera center in each one of the parks. I checked for one the other day at MK and it wasn't installed yet. She referred me to the Contemporary or Epcot. Eventually all the parks will have them but this is something new for WDW. It was just announced the other day. The CD will be $11.99. If you do get the images burned to a CD you should also make a back up copy. That way if anything ever happens to the original you will have a copy. Think of the images as if they were your negatives.

I wish my laptop had online capabilities. I used to use it just for my old business which I didn't use online and it is also a pc. My iMac at home has my whole pic. program and I use shutterfly website for everything. If I could upload the pics to shutterfly that would be the most perfect thing!! I only have the connection for my camera for my mac not a pc. So I have myself in a bit of a bind!! LOL I will call Dis. directly closer to our stay and see if the machines are set up in all the parks I guess! thanks again!!

Do you have a pcmcia slot on your laptop. You could buy a pcmcia reader for your memory card and save the images to your laptop.

Glencoe, safetymom has hit the nail on the head. If your PC laptop has a slot for PCMCIA cards in it, or a USB port, then you can buy a card reader at CompUSA ro Circuit City or Best Buy or even WalMart that will allow you to download your pics to the laptop each day. That's what I do. Those card readers tend to transfer the pics much faster than the cables that plug into the cameras, anyway.

When you get home, you can transfer the pics off your laptop, either by uploading them to Shutterfly, or copying them to your iMac. If your laptop has a CD burner in it, you can also burn your pics to a CD.

It's not impossible to get online, either. All you need for your laptop is a modem; there are plugs on the phones in every WDW resort room that you can use to dial out to a local internet service provider. Finding local ISPs isn't too difficult; you can use any of the national providers like AOL, MSN, or NetZero. I use one called ArcZip.

Thanks for all of the alternatives using my laptop, but frankly it is old and I don't trust it!! At this point I am arming myself w/ two smaller memory cards (plus the one in the camera already), I will use what ever photo centers I find at the parks and get the pics on CDs and if I come across film developing at any regular store I will take advantage of that. I am trying to cover all of my bases! LOL
