We were wondering if anybody has found any good buys on digital cameras at any of the ports of call while on a cruise. If so, what island, and what business did you find it? Thanks for your help!

I absolutely agree with the above poster.

One thing all the websites for digital cameras put is there is no warranty on units bought outside the US. They do this to discourage black market items.

I worked in a photo lab and we sold the "grey market" film all the time.

The "warranty" you get with film and disposable cameras is simple... you get another one free.

Big deal.... more than enough is saved using "grey market" film than could ever be replaced by a defective roll.

In more than 2 decades, I have NEVER had a problem with film that is boxed for another country.

Buying something like a digital camera is another matter. I would be willing to pay a little extra for the "USA warranty".

The question was about buying a digital camera abroad, not about film??? The warantee is what I'm concerned about too.

I have no idea if the prices are better any place else that Disney cruises to. I'd worry the camera didn't work once I got back to the ship, them I'm stuck. Also, the camera could be stolen, or a counterfeit. I'd bet there are Pirates in the Caribbean!

We were just on Dec 13 Eastern and had heard about the "Great Deals" on electronics at St. Martin and St. Thomas.

We checked prices on a number of different electronic devices that we were interested in purchasing (PDAs, Cordless Phones, Digital Cameras etc.)

In every single case, the prices were higher than the everyday price at our local Best Buy. We found no bargains on electronics.

We bought a digital camera a couple of years ago in St Thomas at one of the recommeded shops on the Shopping in Paradise list and the only real bargain we got was no sales tax, 4 rechargeable batteries w/recharging cradle, a card reader, and a carrying case which all would have cost about an additional $75-$100 if bought here in the U.S......according to the Shopping in Paradise disclosure, you're supposed to be 100% covered for defective items for 30 days as long as you buy at one of the recommended shops.....Andy
