Might of missed a posting on the subject, but can Digital Cameras and Video Cameras be put into main luggage on planes? or do you have to take them on as Hand luggage?

Theres no rule either way but I would reccomend taking them on as hand luggage to make sure they dont get knocked and bumped around.

...and especially as they recommend not to lock your cases coming home I'd suggest putting just the camera in your hand luggage. All the cables, charges will be OK in your suitcase.

Thanks for the replies! Will certainly put Video Camera in my hand luggage on the way back. Dont fancy losing all the memories, it may carry.

I've never actually taken my digital camera on a plane. Well for that matter I just bought my first one 2 days ago. The question I have is should I take my memory cards out and put them all with my keys or should I let them be scanned? Will the scanner hurt them or erase them? And will the scanner damage my wifes 35mm film? I heard somewhere that the xray scanners damage film and memory cards.

The xray scanners at the airports wil not harm camera memeory cards or electronic equipment. You only have to be careful with standard photographic film - especially high sensitivity film (>400 ASA).

I always have my cameras in my hand luggage - have you seen how the baggage handlers treat cases!!!!

DW plans on having about 10 rolls of film. Maybe more. How should she handle them? Hand them to the security officer with her keys and such?

I travel with my digital cameras quite often. No need to them out. Your film should be scanned by hand. Your keys can go through in the little bowl they provide.

If the film is exposed after your trip you might want to get mailers from someplace and send them off to be developed before you return home. That way you won't have to take them through security again. The effects of the scanner are cumulative.
