digital camera

for you experienced travelers can you tell me if I have to worry about having my digital camera in my back pack at the airport. Will the scanning machines at the security check points hurt my camera or the memory card. Do I have to have it hand checked

any thoughts?

I bring my digital every year and have never had a problem with the airport scanners doing anything to it. I don't think you have to worry.

We just went through the airports a few weeks ago and had no problems... however the salt water our digital camera fell into at Waikiki beach was not as kind...

I haven't had a problem. A little off topic, before our DL trip last month I got a great Eddie Bauer camera bag at Target. It has room for the digital camera, extra card and a disposable we took for DD to use plus a front zipper pocket. I ended up using it as a pocket book during our trip and didn't bother with a backpack. We just put the stuff for DD in ziploc bags and left them in the stroller. It was so much lighter and easier to carry this bag .

You must understand that digital cameras and film cameras work entirely differently. Digital stores the image digitally on a memory card, while film cameras expose light sensitive medium to, well, light which captures the image. That being said, film is sensitive to the radiation used in the xray imaging equipment and there is a chance the film will be fogged when it passes through the xray. Digital images on a memory card are unaffected.
