Digital camera question

We're thinking about purchasing a digital camera for taking pictures of our granddaughter and for use on a trip. What features should be looking for and what price is reasonable?

"reasonable" price can't really be determined unless you really know what you want. From what I want to do, a $1,000 camera body (minus the lens) is reasonable. For my husband's needs, a $200 camera kit (point-and-shoot) is reasonable.
