Digital Camera Question

This thread is great!

I'm purchasing my first digital camera this week. I've decided to go with the Kodak CX7300. It seems to be very basic and simple to use. It comes with a free Lexar 64MB SD card. I have no idea how many pictures that will hold.

I plan to buy an extra card when I get the camera, but I don't know which is best. How do I find out which card will hold the most pictures before I purchase the camera?

If you haven't bought it yet, I would highly recommend you check out the models with an optical zoom. According to the specs, the 7300 is only digital zoom. Digital zoom degrades the picture quality from a little to a lot depending how much you zoom.

If you have your heart set on a Kodak. Check out this place

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Kodak/

for specs, reviews and prices.

The site is a great resource for digital cameras.

Also, I've looked at some sample pictures here

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/cx7300_samples.html

and don't think they are all that great. Granted, this is only $100 or so camera but if I were buying an entry level camera, I would move up the line a little. If you spend a little more now, or maybe even a different brand, you'll be happier in the long run.

What's nice about Steve's site is he makes comparing cameras easier because he takes pictures of the same objects.

Ditto what EB said above, and those two review sites are great, invaluable.

As for picture capacity, a 64 card will hold twice as much as a 32, a 512 will hold 8 times as much as a 64, and so on. It is just math multiples. Generally, today, the best priced sizes are the 256 and 512 sizes, assuming your camera can take those. The above sites, ecost and buy (links above) are great in their pricing. www.Amazon.com is good at times also. Give them a look, check the available rebates. Just make sure the camera you buy can handle the card. Also, generally, the compact flash, being the most commonly used media today, is generally the best priced. Generally is the operative. Good luck.
