kevin needs a digital camera for work. ok, not really a need but he wants one. he doesnt have too many specifications. actually, only one. he wants a digital camera that you use a floppy disk for instead of memory disks. i cannot find one! i searched for over 2 hrs earlier and have just given up! so can you help me? know of any company that sells these?
thank you!

I think the Sony Mavica would be the one you are looking for. There are many styles to choose from (The only thing with storing on a floppy is that you can't hold many images on one disk, which means carrying boxes of diskettes if you are travelling.)

The above link has reviews to many of the different versions of the Sony Mavica. Just use the camera reviews page and scroll down to Sony.

why does he insist that it use floppies? if a computer has usb you can buy a card reader for a very reasonable price, (i got mine for $10, but i would figure 20-50 depending on the type of memory) or you can buy floppy adapters so you can stick the memory card in his computer, floppies are not a good way of storing pictures, and if you get a camera with a decent resolution the picture won't fit on the floppy.

I have an hp315, which is a 2megapixel camera and uses compact flash, and i love it. I wish it had optical zoom, digital zoom is useless because all it does it crop the picture (yes by using digital zoom you can reduce the size of the picture your saving, but thats all it does).

If he's planning on using it for the web 480X600 ie 1megapixel is good enough, for printing 4X6 get a 2megapixel camera. If you want good quality bigger, get a bigger resolution, but 2 megapixels is a really good price vs quality point (imho)

btw, if for some insane reason he still HAS to have floppies sony is the only one i know who made one. I believe its the sony mavicia but i could have the model wrong. I don't know if they still make it or not.

I heard that Sony has come out with a digital camera that records directly to a CD, rather than a floppy!

Sony does indeed have a camera that records directly onto a cd. I have the Sony Mavica CD250 and love it! That being said there may be some downfalls to this camera for some. You can directly download your pictures via USB cable to your computer. I happen to love this option because I can download them directly to my laptop while on vacation. The camera takes the smaller cds and requires an adapter to use in your computer. Also, the disk must be finalized in order for it to be used in your computer. (Which is why I love the option of downloading) My husband, on the other hand, loved our old Mavica that used floppy disks. He liked the ability to just pop the disk in the computer and go. He says it's too much work to download the pictures to the computer from the camera. But with my New England Yankee upbringing, I refuse to finalize a disk to use in the computer when I can get loads more pictures on it! So I download  Since I do most of the picture taking we know who wins out :D

I just bought a Sony Mavica MVC-CD400 and have been slowly practicing. I took some test pictures, finalized the cd, then viewed the pictures on my computer.
I then put the CD back in the camera and took more pictures. Does that automatically unfinalize the disk?
I am having fun, but this is my first digital camera and its got lots of features I haven't found yet.

you can also get a flash path addapter you put memory card into ad read in a floppy drive.

no where near as fast as usb.

thanks for the advice. we have a digital camera. it does ok. but not great. but i am not complaining because it was free! LOL
i saw the camera that takes the CD's but they are about $600. kevin needs if for work for before and after pics. he fixes trash dumpsters and he would like the pics to show to potential clients. i still dont understand why he can't use the 35mm camera for this. or even the video camera. the problem i have with paying so much is that he tends to break things at work. he went through 3 cell phones last year. and at $600 a pop that will get real expensive real fast. but i will tell him.

I did not even think they still made the floppy ones any more. Shows what I know, LOL. I think he big limitation on the floppy ones, besides the physical size of it, is the severly limited capacity. A floppy can only hold about 3 to 6 decent quality pictures (only one very high quality), whereas the more popular flash card or smart media cards can hold hundreds. A 256 meg card can be found for about $75 today, maybe less if you really dig around with rebates and whatever. My suggestion is to go with a flash card camera.

Just did a quick Google searc hand this was the first one, a 512 for $109 after rebate and a 256 for $68.

I agree with the rest! You should probably stay away from a floppy format. If Dell is dropping them from their portfolio they will probably be like an 8 track or Beta Max in a few years.
