Difficulty level of renting DVC points at Aulani?

My husband and I are looking to possibly travel to Hawaii in September 2017. I've been tossing ideas around in my head for a while and I fairly recently discovered the option to rent DVC points. My question is: how difficult is it to secure a reservation at Aulani by renting points? We are looking for probably 5 nights, but I want to make sure I don't get my hopes up for this if it's going to be difficult to grab.

I have no idea how the rental market is with Aulani points to rent - but I would contact a service like David's DVC Rentals and just inquire if he gets Aulani points on a regular basis and I would be prepared to have him find an Aulani owner promptly at the 11 month window and secure it immediately (so in October). An Aulani owner would be your best bet as everyone else has to wait for 7 months to book it.

(Note - Just as a matter of my own preferences I would use a rental service like David's rather than trying to seek out an Aulani owner on my own. I would just feel safer and more protected working that way.)

Owners of a resort, such as Aulani, can book their home resort 11 months out from arrival date. All other DVC members can begin booking the resort at 7 months out from date of arrival. To get a reservation 11 months out means you need an Aulani owner willing to rent; at 7 months all you need is an owner of any DVC resort.

Your rental issue thus boils down to whether you or a broker can find an Aulani owner to rent 11 months out and owners of other resorts at 7. Brokers tend to have a fairly easy time finding owners to rent at 7 months out, but it can sometimes be difficult to find an Aulani owner to do the rental at 11 months out.

The main issue then becomes what type of room you actually want and will it be available when you try to rent. Based on Aulani historical reservation patterns for Sep, you will likely find the following: (a) you will not be able to get the hotel room or standard view room category at 7 months out and thus for those you will need an Aulani owner to make the reservation with the 11 month window, meaning your chances for those rooms are less than others; (b) ocean view (the most expensive category), and poolside garden view (the second most expensive) are highly likely to be open at 7 months out (they were for all of September 2016), and thus it should be fairly easy to rent those views because all you need to find is any DVC owner of any resort who is willing to rent at 7 months out; (c) island garden view, third on the expense list, was open part of Sep 2016 and not open part of Sep at 7 months out, and thus you may need an Aulani owner for that view but you may have good fortune at 7 month out.

Be aware that if you cannot reserve 7 months out or more. then chances decrease significantly since the further you get beyond that 7 month window, the greater the chance that anything you might want is already filled.

I rent my points all the time and find it easy to get reservations at my home resort aulani. I recommend renting points David's is good but you end up paying more than if you rented from owners.
