I was thinking of giving Disney $$ to my kids for Christmas to use on our cruise.

I'll be using a credit card to pay off our balance at the end of the week.

The question is, can my kids use their dollars to pay off what they buy (I know they have to use the KTTW card) at guest services during the week but I can still use my credit card for the other charges?

Thanks all!

I dont' know the answer to this but if you can't, how about making your own "disney dollars" for them. They can be disney CRUISE dollars, good for whatever on the ship, and they can just pay them to you to "pay" their bill on the cruise and you can just put it on your CC. Seems like it would be the same end effect... I was going to say less hassle but maybe not if you don't feel like making the disney cruise dollars... depends on which is more of a hassle, going to the DS a few days before christmas or making your own.

Unfortunately you cannot use any form of cash on the ship to pay for anything except your bill! And Disney Dollars are considered a form of cash. They would have to charge what they want to the kttw card. You could still give them the disney dollars and have them bring you receipts and you take the money out of the disney dollars. Similar to the same idea of making them, but they are real.

How old are your kids? Are they old enough to be roaming on their own onboard? If they are then you may want to do as I said. Then, once they have reached their limit you can have the charging privledges removed from their cards.

Hope this helps!

You can pay off what they spent with disney dollars at guest services. My family gave my boys disney dollars last christmas, and we charged what they wanted to buy on our KTTW cards and then we went with them to guest services to pay off the amount with the Disney Dollars.

You can pay on your account at Guest Services any time with any form of payment during the week. I pay with cash, disney dollars and then the rest is charged to my cc at the end of the week.
DD usually has her own money that we give to GS to be applied to the account after she has made her purchase.

When a certain limit on your account is reached they will charge your credit card during the cruise as well. I just came across an old statement where they charged my card after my account was over $500.00.

We're doing the same thing, giving DSs Disney dollars through the next 8 months until our cruise. Just like others have said, your kids would have to use their Key to the World cards to actually make the purchase (unless they don't have charging privileges, in which case you'd have to be with them and use your card), then the kids would give their Disney Dollars to you, and you can use them to pay off the bill.

Now I have another question.... If my DSs have their Disney Dollars with them, can THEY go to Guest Services to make a payment on our family's account, or can only adults make payments??? I would think that they'd allow kids to do this, since it's a PAYMENT and not a charge.

I learned something else on this thread a few weeks ago and someone please correct me if I am wrong...
I am under the assumption that if a child has they're own disney dollars/cash or whatever...this can be applied to "they're own" KTTW card...like as if it is they're own CC...this way they can charge the card but it is fixed to be seperate from the other accts... I can't find the original thread but I know I read it on here...lol
So~ if you have 3 kids and they are old enough and have they're own money/disney dollars...you can apply that to they're very own kttw card and that way it doesnt effect your card and once the amount applied is gone, it is gone .....then everyone has they're own charge accounts per say...
Did that make sense...:P I hope so, because that is what I am planning on doing...:wave2:

Yes, they will allow the kids to make the payments on the account. My daughter has used her Disney Dollars to pay on "her" room card.

They have to use the card to make the purchase, but they can go to the Guest Services desk at any time to make a payment on the account.

The only warning worth adding....if your child has charging privleges, they are essentially unlimited. It is a good idea to make them go to guest services every day to check their balance. If they charge over what you have allowed (or what they can pay) it will default to your account. Also DCL has been known to do weird things with excursion tickets. It is possible that their excursion ticket would show up billed to their account even though YOU ordered it and planned to pay it. It's not quite as clean a system as one might wish in terms of keeping their account separate.

Thanks for the answers, everyone!

I think what we'll end up doing is having all 4 of our KTTW cards hooked to our one credit card, but tell DSs they can make payments towards their purchases themselves, using their Disney Dollars, by going right to Guest Services themselves. We trust the boys 100% with having charging privileges on their cards, so that won't be an issue with us.

Thanks for clearing this up for me! :)

Nope, that's incorrect. You CAN place the money on your child's cards, but once that amount is used up they can still charge, it will just be placed on your credit card when you depart. So, if you place $50 on a child's card, yes you can charge $50 but once you pass that, the cards are still linked up to your credit card and you can charge past that $50. So, you can't use them as debit cards and once they reach that $50 limit they turn off, unforunately DCL doesn't do that. So, be sure that your kids will be "adult" enough to realize that they are close to their limit, because if they are not, you could end up with a LARGE bill at the end of the cruise.

A few years ago my son went to WDW with FIRST Robotics, I purchased him a VisaBuxx card andx am considering it for our cruise. It is a card that you put $$ on and has no additional charging authority but the set limit. This cards can also be 'reloaded' several different ways. One is you can call and put in whatever you want OR what was rather an interesting feature is you can set it up to have $$ taken out of an account (checking, savings, credit credit) at a set rate and set intervals. So, if you give your children an allowance of $10 a week you can have it deposited right to the card. The card can be used everywhere Visa is used and can be used at ATMs also. One other nice feature is it teaches the kids about using credit wisely by sending emails of where they are spending and has online 'quizzes' as well. My son goes to college next year and I will probably use this then as well.

We opened a Visa Buxx card account for DS15 a couple of years ago and it worked out fine until the bank it was through decided to discontinue their participation with Visa Buxx. So that one had to be closed, and we just haven't gotten around to opening a new one for him yet. Otherwise, I think it's a good idea.

The Visa Buxx sounds like a good idea, but there is still unlimited charging priviledges with your KTTW card on the ship. If you go over your set limit with your own card you will still get a bill at the end that you will have to pay for with another form of payment. Just make sure you get a printout of all KTTW cards each day to keep track of charges.

I really didn't read all of these in detail...but we just got off the MAGIC Saturday...

Here is my experience...

The ressie was in my name....dd had her own KTTW, dh had his...I had mine....we all charged. I had been having money held out of my paycheck for the cruise. I had a 200 shipboard credit, I gave GS 800 in cash.....I actually got 50.00 back.....imagine that...lol DD had Dis Dols to pay for her arcade cards...she gave them 20.00 at a time...they gave her an arcade card and when she needed another one...she'd go back. Each time...the Dis Dols showed they were applied to her account. All three accounts were on the same account sheet...there was a charge in Promonade Lounge on DD's account.....I went down to GS and asked what the $40 charge was in PL for a 10 yo....the girl asked did she get a drink mug...I said of course...that was it...we had a great laugh and I was embarrassed.....

You can use Disney Dollars...you just have to go to GS and have them apply it to your account or your kids account....

WE HAD A MARVELOUS TIME......trip report should be ready by the end of the week............
