We are planning our first cruise with a verandah - finally biting the bullet!! I have read that some have a solid wall and others have see-through rails. How can you tell which roome have each and what are the advantages of each? Are there other variations?

Most of the verandah's are the plexiglass type. The only ones that are metal are the ones along the back of the ship. I don't really think there is any disadvantage to either. The only thing I could see is that if you have young children they couldn't see through the metal ones like they could the plexiglass. Also you couldn't see through them when your sitting in your stateroom and not on the verandah.

There is one other type of verandah: a Navigator's Verandah. This is a Cat. 7 stateroom. It is an enclosed verandah, but it has an open window, kind of like a porthole, but without the glass. It has a built in bench and a little table out there. There are a very limited number of these rooms though.

If you have a choice, get the plexiglass verandah by all means. Believe me, there is a big difference.

While having any verandah is great, if you wish to view the ocean you must always stand up in front of the solid bottom verandah. If you sat down all you could view was the sky. It was just too closed in for us.

For our Oct. 16 cruise we reserved a room with the plexiglass verandah so we could sit out there with our coffee, etc. and enjoy the full view.

Have a wonderful cruise and enjoy your view.

Plexiglass Verandahs are Forward of the Cat 7 cabins (see Deck Plans) and metal rails Aft of Cat 7 cabins.
