Difference between checked bags and carry on

I have never cruised before and have my first one booked in August. Yay! I am trying to read up as much as possible, and I keep reading about checked bags and carry on bags. What is the difference? We plan to spend some time in Vancouver before the cruise, so Disney won't be transporting any of our bags.

Checked bags are the ones that will be delivered to your stateroom later in the day of your first day. Usually after everyone has boarded. Carry on bags are the ones you actually keep with you. Since you will not have immediate access to your regular luggage, it is suggested to keep things you may need immediately in your carry on. Id's, passports, any money, change of clothes, makeup, sunscreen..things of that nature.

Checked bags are items you check at the port terminal, typically with porters, and are delivered to your stateroom later on. This would be your main luggage items.

Carry-on bags are items you keep with you the entire time as you embark.

Sort of like airlines -- checked bags are those you entrust to the airline/cruiseline to handle. Carry-on bags are those that you literally carry yourself. Carry-ons generally are smaller, though of course that depends on the luggage you choose, but must fit through a scanner similar to the airports. Larger suitcases must be checked with the porters.

Enjoy your cruise!

If your bag is too large to go through the x-ray at security (it's like a regular airport x-ray machine) then you have to check it with the porters and it will later be delivered to your stateroom. You don't have the option of bringing larger bags through security with you.

Also, liquids MUST be carried on. Not TSA-style liquids, but water, sodas, beer, wine all must be carried on. You cannot check them in your checked bags.

Thank you all so much! Does anybody have suggestions of what I may need to keep in my carry on?

Make sure your 'carry' on bags for the cruise day isn't too heavy. You'll be locked out of your room until the afternoon so you'll be dragging it along with you to each restaurant and each shop you might want to look at. It can become heavy when you have a whole bunch of them.

These and any Adult beverages.

Sunscreen (yes, even for Vancouver), bathing suit if you plan to swim that first day, I keep all formal clothes with me (not an issue for our DCL cruises so far but for royal it is) and that includes my dresses I wear to dinner even on non-fancy nights and one pair of shoes that *could* match all those dresses. IDs, CCs, inhaler (any medication you need for the cruise), camera. Computer, kindle.

If you park in the garage at the cruise terminal, where/at what point do you tender your checked bags to the porters?

This is Port Canaveral
You will pull into the drop off/parking/ terminal at the far end of this picture. The parking garage is on the right the Cruise Terminal is on the left.

They will first check your name and ID's and will direct you to one of two drop off places to drop off your bags. Porters will be at both places to take your bags. Make sure you have your luggage tags on you bags and are ready to go. They are trying to move 4000 people.

This one is along the outside curb. The parking garage is on the left. There is a overhead crosswalk on the 3rd level.

Any medications including prescriptions, add to this list.

I always have at least one change of clothing, extra socks and underwear, some toiletries, medications, my formal dress and shoes, bathing suit, jewelry, phone, iPad, passport, important documents. My bag is usually quite heavy because I always plan for what would happen if my luggage doesn't show up (although it always has in 9 cruises) or is unreasonably delayed and I had to live out of it for several days. I travel the same way by plane. Never had to live out of my carryon but just in case...

Don't forget to keep your cruise documents with you in your carry on and not in your checked luggage!

AND easily accesible. They ask for them before you enter. I was not expecting to be "checked" until check in, but they got me at the door. Thankfully, my paperwork was right inside my bag and I was able to get through fast. The poor family behind us was asked to step out of line while the lady dug through an entire suitcase.

I totally second this. I have our entire cruise/trip in a file holder pictured below. It holds cruise docs, our passports, flight info, etc. it is always in my backpack and very easily accessible. It's kind of my travel bible.
