What is the difference between AKL and AKV?

My interpretation of it is that AKL is Animal Kingdom Lodge, which is a deluxe resort hotel. AKV is Animal Kingdom Villas like Jambo house, which is a deluxe villas. Am I correct?

Can we use DVC points to reserve standard rooms at Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Yes, AKL refers to the lodge and the rooms there are reserved from Disney. AKV are the villas and are part of the DVC. There are villas at the lodge, Jambo House--5th and 6th floor--as well as at Kidani Village.

You can not use points to reserve at any of the deluxe resorts that have a DVC component so no, booking standard rooms at AKL is no longer allowed.

Animal Kingdom Lodge was the name of the hotel before any villas were added. When they added the first set of villas on the fifth and sixth floor of the original building, they referred to those as Animal Kingdom Villas. They also gave a new name to the building, Jambo, and that the second building to be constructed as all villas would be Kidani. Finally, after they opened Kidani, Disney decided to name the entire resort the Animal Kingdom Lodge. So now that name refers to the entire resort, both Jambo and Kidani, and both the villas and the hotel. But members still commonly refer to the hotel portion as the lodge and the DVC portion as the villas.

In Dec I stayed 3 nights at KV and then 4 nights at the lodge for a conference. The KV was in a villa. Did I notice a big difference no not really. Other than the fact there was a second bed in the room. No it was not as big our room was by the people pen. You can not book rooms for the lodge just the villa.
