Didj or Leapster2v

My 6 yr old ds has $75 left in Target gift cards to spend from his birthday. He has no wants left so I was thinking of a bigger item perhaps a handheld game? Currently the didj and leapster2 are about the same price. Which would you recommend? If you have both which do you/your kids prefer? Why did you buy the one you did if you only have one? Any rumors on a didj2 or leapster3 soon? I'd rather not buy a game to have it become obsolete in 2 months.

Btw ds just turned 6, is in kindergarten. he started off slow in his class since he didn't attend pre-k but seems to catch on quickly to new things. While I do want something he can use thats not way above I would also like for him to be able to grow into and not grow out of it in 6 months or so.

My son (7) has both and actually still plays with both. I think that the leapster is good for the 4-8 range where the didj is more like 6-10. My son is an advanced reader, so he probably transitioned to the didj earlier that most kids. Honestly, I'd have your son look at the games and see which ones he likes best and pick the machine that way. He's probably going to be happy either way. Of course, I don't know if either machine is on the way out in terms of technology.

DS7 has a Didj and LOVES it. I don't know about the Leapster other than what I heard when researching for it, it's for younger ones. I know with the Didj you can go online and set it up for questions to go with what they are doing in school. I haven't used this option yet, but I'm excited to do so. He's been learning a lot (well reinforcing what I teach him... homeschooled) and he takes it with him everywhere. We even got one for DS turing 4 for his Bday. No, he's not going to be able to play it like older brother, but he loves watching and actually does pretty well with it, we just help him answer the questions mostly. His guys dies a lot, but he has fun with it!
