I am cracking up! My friends 1 yr old WILL NOT crawl! She scoots :rotfl: I mean the girl sits, one hand in front of her, one in back and she pulls herself around !!! And she is fast too!!! There is nothing wrong with her. If the darn girl doesn't look so awkward doing it!

My friend said her oldest son did this too! What's up with that?

Tell me there are other babies who do this and tell me why? Anyone know? She looks more like this ----> :fish: LOL

whew I found this:

Q. My son is 12 months old and skipped crawling. He is not quite walking yet. He pulls himself up and walks along the furniture and leaves go every once in awhile. He scoots around on his rear but never did crawl. I was told by unprofessionals (friends)that babies who do not crawl have a good chance of having learning disabilities when they reach school age. Is this true and should I still attempt to teach him to crawl?

A. Most pediatricians have heard this from time to time in the course of their practice.
However, an extensive review of the medical literature failed to confirm the existence of any relationship between a baby who does not crawl and future developmental abnormalities. Furthermore, many developmental pediatricians do not even consider crawling a developmental milestone! Crawling is not mentioned once in the popular parenting book What to Expect in the First Year. “A few children never crawl,” according to the American Academy of Pediatric’s book Caring for Your Baby and Young Child. The book goes on to explain that as long as a baby is able to explore his or her surroundings on their own, there is no cause for concern. Some babies who skip crawling learn to crawl after they start walking.

All of us have had many children as patients who did not crawl and grew up to excel academically. Therefore, our advice is to add this to your list of “pediatric myths” and not to worry.

Yep. I used to work in childcare and I've seen 1 or 2 kids that never crawled. When my younger son started crawling a few months ago, my mom wondered how babies ever learned to crawl since they never see adults do it.

My third son never crawled, he scooted on his bottom. It was pretty funny, he'd sort of rock from one cheek to the other, and he was fast too. He was a big, heavy baby AND we had almost no carpet in that house. I think bumping his little nose on the hard tile and wood floors was part of the trouble, and it was easier to scoot on those suraces. I've never seen another baby do that.

My husband never crawled. He's perfectly normal now. ;)

My Nephew crawled only one day because he saw my DD doing it. Never crawled again.

Both DDs never crawled - and they are both fine walker.

DD#2 took much much longer to walk though - turns out she's very loosely double jointed. It makes things much harder for her. She used to stand the on the tops of her feet (yes, I said that right - just try to imagine it).

We had dd's over to a friend's house last weekend. Our oldest (2) was running everywhere and their only was literally scooting on her bottom and pulling herself with her hands. She kept up with DD and I was laughing hysterically. This kid was sooooooooo fast!!! It's perfectly normal and I would imagine it wears the bottoms from her pants and diapers!!

Our eldest dd who is now 14yo never crawled either - she scooted. It could be personality or preference.

She's still very smart, unconventional, and beats to her own drum. :)

My middle daughter scooted just like you described. She's a good, well adjusted 8 year old now :)

Actually, crawling isn't considered a milestone like, say, sitting up, because some kids never do. So long as they have a style of locomotion, they're okay. Both my girls crawled, but DS never did--her did a butt scoot with one leg under him and one out to the side, pulling himself by his arms. It was very efficient--he could carry something, was really fast, and didn't have to transition when he got to his destination. Of course, he was SOO good at it, he didn't walk until 18 months, but he's always been an "outside the box" kid, so in retrospect, this was just one more of those odd things he does/did.

If a child has no way to get around by the end of the first year, evaluation by a physician is in order. DS was in physical therapy for a year--not over the scoot, because he wouldn't walk. Better safe than sorry--he's quite the athlete now.

Neither of my sons crawled. Well, DS19 did--once. I took a picture of it. He used a military crawl--belly to the ground, pulling along with just his arms. The fronts of all his shirts were worn to a frazzle. He just graduated high school, headed for college in 2 wks.

DS10 is developmentally delayed. Crawling was too hard for him; he couldn't hold his head up. So he scooted on his back, pushing with his feet. Later he learned to sit up and propelled himself on his butt, pushing off with his hands. His shoulders and back were very strong--built like a diver :goodvibes Eventually he learned to walk & run.

Crawling doesn't seem like a make or break thing to me. :dog:

My eldest son never crawled...........he would scoot around on his bottom or he would do all fours.......hands and feet. Did that from 9 1/2 months till he was 15 months with walking around the furniture and letting go from 12 months...walked unaided at 15 months and was very sure footed. Was actually running 4 days later. People never believed me that he was running, but I took him to Gymboree and they were surprised and told me he was extremely sure footed.....never stumlbed, never fell. Unlike his younger brother who did crawl but walked at 13 months, stumbled alot and was covered in bruises from all this tumbles.:)

My brother never crawled. My mom said she was really worried about him - he would only move around if he could pull up on something and use it to help him walk. Then one day he just took off walking by himself.

Of course, my mom also took him to the doctor because he slept so much and the dr was :rotfl: because he said most moms come in begging for Valium to make their children sleep!

Hannah never crawled. She actually never moved herself around until she started standing and "cruising." It was terribly frustrating for both of us, because if I left the room, she would start screaming because she couldn't follow me. She started "cruising" (holding on to furniture as she walked along) at about 11 months, and walking at 13 months.

She is now a perfectly normal 6 year old.

My son rolled for quite a while. It was not a very effecient way to travel, since he never knew where he would end up. He would just roll until he ran into something. He did start crawling a bit at 11 months, but at 13 months he was walking.

Inever crawled. I rolled and then I walked. I turned out OK (I think??!!??!).

Wow, this is quit normal I see, to skip crawling. Funny I never saw it before in my life... hmmm always something new to learn!

My 3rd DS never crawled-or ever attempted.

Whenever he wanted to go somewhere he would lie flat on the floor and roll around till he reached his destination. Then one day...he just took off :)

My DD used to scoot like that as well. We called it a crabby crawl. She started walking at 13 months and would then crawl occasionally. It did look funny but I thought it was pretty smart of her to figure out a way to get around much faster than conventional crawling. My DD just turned 6 and she runs, climbs, bikes etc like any other kid so there's no long term affect in doing this. It's funny to watch but I wouldn't worry about it.
