Did you work while going to HS and college?

During high school in the late '50's I would bale hay some summer days and during the summer of '59 I worked at a Sinclair gas station. This was when you pumped the gas, cleaned the windows and checked under the hood. During college I worked at a General Motors plant in Anderson, IN, one summer. Another summer I worked for the Indiana State Highway Dept.. I loved the highway job. I got a great tan and good exercise.

High school: Babysitting, Carpet Cleaning (summers).
College: Carpet Cleaning (summer). Editing papers. Waitress. Computer Lab.
The summer after my sophomore year, I had a paid internship at a small daily newspaper near my college.
The summer after my junior year, I had a paid internship at a small daily newspaper near my home. They wanted to hire me, and were willing to work with me on completing my degree. So my senior year of college, I commuted 2.5 hours (one way) two days a week to complete my college courses, and worked four long days a week at the newspaper.

I worked in our local public library in high school and also volunteered at the local hospital. I didn't work in college except as a TA for labs; that's how I got my gas money.

Hard to remember a time I wasn't working. My parents worked hard just to make ends meet so I knew if I wanted to have some extras I had to earn them myself. And that was fine--gave me something to do, taught me the value of work and gave me pride that I was doing for myself to some degree.

Around 11 I started mowing yards, washing cars, raking leaves and picking up my neighbor's glass pop bottles (yes, I'm that old). I had a "paycheck" job in high school working in a grocery store, and in college I had a couple of different jobs, working in the college bookstore and refereeing intramural sports. In the summer I umpired baseball (Little League through American Legion) and worked for a company in its office products warehouse.

I had a couple part time jobs in high school. I worked full time summers during college. First year in college I had a part time work study job. After that I worked off campus 30 plus hours a week at a book store.

When I was 12 I had an afternoon paper route until I was 15. Then I worked in a grocery store after school for a year, followed by a janitor job in a wood working factory (full time during summer breaks). In college I worked full time during the summer breaks as a security officer at a defense plant.

I started working at 14 in the summer. When I was 15 I worked in retail and did so until getting my big girl job. While having my adult job I went to school and finished my degree.
For my girls i encourage them to volunteer and to give back over working.

High school - lifeguarding, part-time during the school year and full time through the summer.
College - some lifeguarding, one summer working for my father (plumbing) and a couple years working as an office assistant in our Business department

During HS I worked a few jobs--at a gift shop at the mall during the week, and then at a doctor's office on the weekends. Once that store went out of business, I also left the doctor's office and worked at a watch shop until my Sophomore year in college. I then left there to work as a data entry specialist at a bank, where I stayed until graduation. But throughout all of that, I'd help my uncle with his specialty toy business when he needed it. Yeah, I was very busy in my teens and early 20s!! But my mom was a single parent, so we needed it.

Just babysat in high school. In college I worked at a campus pizza place and Rite Aid.

ETA: I forgot - I worked at McDonald's the summer between HS and college and then sporadically my freshman year of college (when I'd come home on the weekends).

My parents owned a business, so I always worked for them. I did a lot of babysitting as well. Senior year of high school, I got a job working as a cashier at the grocery store. During college I worked at 7Eleven during the summer and during school breaks, but I didn't have a job during the school year, my parents felt that with all the money they were paying for school that I should concentrate on school.

I babysat during my HS years and in college I worked in the cafeteria dishroom and during the summers I worked cleaning the dorms. And in between HS and going off to college I was a camp counselor.

Once I turned 16, I worked about 36 hours a week during the school year and a ridiculous amount during the summer. I also worked full time through college. I really struggle with my DS (15) working in HS. On the one hand, it is a good experience as far as having a job etc. and it could be a nice way to figure out how to balance money etc. -on a larger scale than just allowance, but on the other hand, once I started working it was my main focus and I really should have put more into school instead of my high school job...it's also where I met a lot of not great influences and had many more opportunities to do stuff I shouldn't have been etc. I was lucky and it didn't really effect my life at all long term, however it def. could have.

High school, no, there wasn't any opportunity. College, yes. I worked as a waitress mostly and then was a teaching assistant my Sr. year.

High school - child care programs, lifeguarding, swimming instructor, babysitting - up to 15 hrs a week
HS summers - camp counsellor - full time
College - lifeguarding, swimming instructor, language instructor, outreach program coordinator - 30 hrs a week
College summers - Camp counsellor, University orientation program coordinator, camp nurse

I'm very lucky I've had quite a bit of work experience up until this point! With one year left of my second degree I'm considering getting a serving job before heading out into the real world
