Did You See Bill Maher's Disgusting Croc Hunter Halloween Costume?

It took me a long time to even open this thread. Now, I wish I wouldn't have. I find it to be totally repulsive, especially with who it's coming from. Is he jealous of Steve's notoriety, or what?

The world mourns the passing of Steve Irwin. I don't think I've ever seen a more united front in my life. With Steve (and his family) we were able to put everything else aside for a bit and truly mourn the loss of a great human being. I am really saddened by this display.

Personally I don't like him but this is beyond low.

Wow. What a sorry, pathetic fool. He must have no heart. I cannot even begin to imagine what that would do to those poor children. I don't envy Terri Irwin's job of trying to shield them from every tasteless, heartless idiot in this world....all while she is grieving for her husband. Bill Maher, you are a moron. :furious:

While I don't think it's particularly funny, I also dont think it's offensive. I bet there will be a *LOT* of dead Steve Irwins out there this Halloween season. There is always ONE tasteless costume every year and this is no exception. I remember a few years ago every other teenage boy was the Unibomber. It's not really a big deal.

So just what kind of costume would someone have to wear for it to be offensive to you (and a big deal)?

Why is it that some people just can't show respect for the dead and their family? Epsecially a person like Irwin.

I think it's appaling and I would question the character of someone who would wear this.

there isn't a costume you could dream up that would offend me.

Irwin did great things for animal protection, but he also made a great deal of money and became a celebrity promoting them.

tasteful, no. fair game, yes.

Looking at that picture just gave me a sick feeling in my stomach. I don't see how someone with any concern for fellow humans could do that. He has to know Irwin's wife and children could potentially see that. What a shame to make a joke of someone's tragic death.

I usually like Bill Maher but I don't like this decision. It's way too soon for something like this and wish that he would have shown a lot more sensitivity.

ETA: the Southpark episode aired and Comedy Central took more complaint calls than any other show including where the make fun of religion (hot topic!)

This is amazing to me. While I can see why it's not in great taste to make fun of his death, South Park doesn't have much taste when it comes to anything (I believe one of the first episodes I ever saw that convinced me to watch the show sometimes is when everyone begins pooping out their mouths). I just would have thought if people were going to call to complain about South Park there would be a lot more that offended them than making fun of this person's death.

I didn't even really know about him until his death when suddenly everyone on these boards was talking about it and it was on the news. Was he an especially popular personality? I can't remember hearing anything about him until after his death when I suddenly heard about him all the time.

The creators of South Park also are supposed to have a SP show coming out soon that displays Steve Irwin in that exact same way, showing up to Satan's bday party. I was mortified when I heard that. I can't believe people are that cruel.

yeah well after they killed Chef nothing surprises me with them anymore. i still love the show tho.

OK, outting myself as a closet South Park watcher... (I swear, my husband watches, not me!) But the episode last week that included Steve Irwin had Satan telling Steve that it was too soon for that kind of a costume. SATAN said it was in bad taste. Of course, Steve then revealed that it wasn't a costume (and got kicked out of the party for not having one), which implied that he was in Hell. In the same episode, Ghandi and Princess Di were in Hell. Why is Steve Irwin any less or more offensive than Ghandi and Princess Di? Just because his death was more recent?

Anyone who regularly watches South Park would probably not be offended because every time there's an episode involing Hell, famous people who really shouldn't be in Hell are there. (I don't know if they've done Pope John Paul yet, but I wouldn't put it past them.) And I'd really be surprised if the Steve Irwin joke got more complaints than the pooping Jesus...

Anyway... I am in no way defending the costume - I think it is tacky and tasteless. I'm just defending South Park for some God-awful reason. Please don't tell my husband.

I understand your point, but the thing is, while Steve Irwin did make money, money wasn't his goal. His heart was with wildlife. He promoted the cause to raise money for things he believed in. If you don't share this opinion, I'd bet you haven't followed his career very closely.

Disagree with his POV all you want, but to mock him is nothing less than repulsive.

People who are offended certainly have a right to be. Everyone is entitled to their own feelings. Obviously, I don't feel the same way.

I'm sure that I could find a few adult costumes that I would find offensive. For instance, trashy women's costumes make me go  at about the same level as this Steve Irwin costume. Back in the day (when I was child free) my DH and I would go to the annual State Street Halloween Party just to people watch. I have to tell you that a lot of the costumes were both offensive and funny ... like the 4-pack of giant walking condoms.

I really don't see the difference between this costume and other similar costumes like the Unibomber or Roy (of Siegfried & Roy) with a white Tiger ripping out his throat. I remember many adults and older teens with these costumes. Were they in bad taste? You bet they were! Is this one in bad taste? Yup.

I will count the sting rays tonight and get back to you tomorrow.

I think Bill Maher should be ashamed of himself, and I feel the same way about the Roy/Tiger costmes. It doesn't have a single thing to do with whether or not I was a fan of Steve or Roy (or anyone else who endures or dies from a tragic circumstance), it's just heartless and cruel to make merry of terrible suffering like that.

I don't care if this makes me sound like a crochety old lady. If this kind of behavior is acceptable, then that's a symptom of our society sinking ever lower.

Dressing up for halloween should be all in GOOD fun.

How anyone can look at that costume, and think that it was done for the fun of it, needs serious help.

UNREAL. :sad2:

Assuming it's him (even though it looks like a bad photophop job - must be a bad angle or the lens if it's him) it's obvious the reactions are colored by peoples feelings for his politics. Same as people were claiming when people were looking at Rush differently for his comments and actions concerning MJF.

Both were cases of real bad taste, but also not out of character for for Bill or Rush. They make their money by doing stuff like this, they live to shoc and create controversy.
