Did you know banana bread can explode? Yep, it can.

I had a loaf in the oven and I just heard a loud "POP!" sound. I checked the whole house before I realized it might have come from the oven. When I looked inside I saw a nearly empty loaf pan and banana debris all over the oven. :confused3

This isn't even my first culinary explosion...so...perhaps I should keep out of the kitchen. :rotfl2:

Seriously, how could this happen. Unless someone replaced my flour with gunpowder or something I am at a loss.

Anybody know???

I don't know! LOL But I do know that it sounds like something that would happen to me! :confused3 :rotfl:

Wow! I make banana bread almost every other week and never had this happen. What's in your recipe?

I dunno...I do know that eggs will explode in the microwave :lmao:

I have no idea what could have happened. That's really odd.

Just the normal stuff I promise! Bananas, flour, baking soda, baking powder, sugar, an egg, vanilla, butter, pecans...I think that was it :confused3. Oven was set at 350.

Maybe the baking soda/powder combo?:confused3 I know I don't put both in my banana bread, only the baking soda.....that is weird though

Very strange. What type of pan are you using?

I wonder if your over isn't heating evenly and an airbubble was in the pan and expanded until it just burst? No idea but I guess it sounds remotely feasible. :confused3 Sorry it happened--hope it's a self-clean oven at least.

oh you poor thing, get dh to clean it up for ya... ;)

Weird! I have never heard of that happening! Although I can definitely see it happening to me as well! :rotfl2: I wonder if it wasn't a combo of the baking soda/powder, a chemical reaction of some kind?

Hmmm...I don't use baking powder either. Maybe the bananas were overly ripe and caused it to be a little too acidic?

Were you using a glass pyrex pan? If so, inspect it and see if there is a crack in it. Pyrex can break and causes a loud popping sound when it does. Perhaps that pressure pushed some of the batter out of the pan?

I use both baking soda and powder too and I've never had it explode! That is weird! And now you have that wonderful smell and no bread!

i make banana nut bread on a regular basis and my recipe doesn't call for baking powder. otherwise, everything you put in it seems perfectly normal to me. i can't figure out why you had this problem, but i'm sorry it happened. don't give up! everyone makes mistakes, especially in the kitchen!

:scared1:
YOWZA! That sounds like something that would happen to me. ;)

Yeah, but I bet exploded banana bread smells a whole lot better than microwaved hard boiled eggs. Doing that little experiment broke my parents microwave. I don't remember how old I was- young teen maybe? It was one of the first-generation models with the dial knob. But the stench! It took weeks to get that smell out of the kitchen. :scared:

Thank you for the replies.

I never thought about the baking soda/powder combination...I was just following a recipe that was highly rated so I figured it should be safe.

ducklite, I agree your explanation sounds feasible. Maybe?

It was in a pyrex loaf pan and I did check it and the pan itself is fine. No cracks or anything.

nhrenee, the other thing that exploded was actually a pyrex roasting pan that exploded when I took the roast out of the oven. The floor still has melted patches from that little disaster. :rolleyes1 (I did manage to get the gravy stains out of the ceiling)

You're right about the aroma of banana bread..my husband came in and asked where it was because it smelled so good. I said, "It's in the oven, grab a spoon and scrape it off and it's all yours." LOL.

I think...THINK...I am going to be brave and try the recipe again since I bought more bananas this afternoon. I'll let you know if the kitchen comes out covered in bananas. LOL.
