Went last week as my drivers license was expiring in February anyway - was stressing so much ! Basically about the identification that you have to bring - (specifically proof with FULL middle name included) - and since I live in a building where we don't pay any utilities , I didn't have a utility bill ( needed for proof of address)

Luckily, I listened to a friend of mine and brought a current bank statement which did suffice -

I heard that so many people were being turned away - just wondering if happened to any Dis-ers?

I was able to do mine online. So was my husband. Took about 60 seconds.

We live in South Carolina - moved here six years ago. I’m assuming DMV had enough recent documentation on file that we qualified for online.

Did mine in April. Took the required docs and had no issues.

But I've never been married or had a name change so the name on my Birth Certificate is my current name.

Did mine in October with no issues. Had all the proof I needed, they only asked for 2 things. Was in and out in 10 minutes.

This shouldn't be a stressful thing. I just did it -- I printed the list from the internet and gathered all the necessary documents on a clipboard. I was in and out in about 15 minutes. The thing is, you need to get a copy of the requirements and BRING THE RIGHT STUFF. If you follow the list, you cannot go wrong.

I don't know if it's the same in every state, but here's what I had to have:

- One document proving my full name /birth date. I brought my driver's license and my birth certificate (one would've done, but I brought both). A passport or Green Card would also have been acceptable.
- One document proving my social security number. I couldn't lay my hands on my SS card, so I took my W2 from last year's taxes -- every category allows several different choices for documentation, but whatever you bring MUST be from the list.
- Two documents proving my address. I think I brought a bank statement and my car registration /insurance. Other options included a voter registration card, school records, a mortgage or renter's agreement. They allow about a dozen different things in this category, and a utility bill is only one of the choices.
- Since I'm married, I also brought a copy of my marriage certificate to prove my name change.

It's not a lot of stuff, but -- again -- you must PLAN and bring the right things. Do not think that they're going to allow you to sub in different things -- you must have the items from the list.

Gathering these things is never going to be convenient, so go ahead and do it. You'll never have to do it again. Eventually it'll be required, and it doesn't cost any more than a standard driver's license.

I did mine on Friday. My license expires on my birthday (Jan 7) and I’m flying out that day so I decided to get it taken care of early. I had no problems with the required documentation. I brought my passport, SS card, current pay stub and water bill.

I did it 3 weeks ago. Had to make a second visit without an appointment because I made an appointment at my closest DMV for Nov 30 on a Saturday. I made the appointment 10 weeks in advance because it was the first one available. About 6 people waiting at opening time (8 AM) and maybe a dozen without appointments. They didn't open, didn't have any signs saying they were closed, and it took me looking up on my device that they were closed over the entire Thanksgiving weekend.

I brought a bunch of items. My passport, my original SSN card, my credit card mailing, an old credit card statement I found in the house (I pay online so I don't always open them), and my property tax bill. It was suggested that the credit card statement (even if a year old) was better than the card mailer. All my accepted documents were scanned - or at least the stuff with my name/info and my address. They specifically tried to limit what parts of the documents were scanned, like avoiding the credit card transactions.

In California all driver licenses are made at a central location in Sacramento, and mine arrived in a week. I did get a temporary paper license that doesn't expire until Jan 30. It's strictly text on their official paper used for registrations and other documents.

I guess the key is that there's some sort of star. In California that's a white star inside a gold bear.

Most states seem to have a pretty ordinary looking star within a circle. Not all states have that. As far as I can tell, Washington isn't going to have that, but will issue enhanced driver licenses and IDs, which state that and are Real ID compliant.

I haven't done it yet since my license hasn't expired yet. I will probably just stick with the regular ID and get a passport which I've been meaning to do anyhow.

My license expired in June. The DMV that is 2 blocks from my house was booked solid for 3 months, which would have been a month after my license expired. I didn't want to go without an appointment. So I went to another DMV office 15 miles from here, one that had an appointment almost immediately, and with a reputation for quick service. Well, I waited 90 minutes with an appointment, while my neighborhood DMV I am usually in and out within 10 minutes of my appointment time. So not so quick, but as far as documents, no problem.
But I get that some folks have issues. Back 15 years ago when I was on the Little League board and LL required proof of residence, I ran into several people who have everything sent to a Post Office Box, even their license has the PO Box number. And their utility bills had the PO Box on them and no mention of the address that the service was being provided to.

I'll do mine the next time I renew, which I believe 2022. I have a passport and will use that for travel until I get a real ID. No sense doing it sooner than I need to.

I think that's when mine is up for renewal too. Based upon the appointments I made for my family this year, it seems like the earliest appointment is 2 months later :P So I know to try to make an appointment in May or June and hope for something by September, LOL.

I’m in New Jersey. I’m getting mine in January of 2021. From October 2020 until then I’ll just use my passport for air travel.

I didn't do it.....come next year I will decide or just stick with the one I have and take my passport when needed.
When I went to get my license renewed, no idea about what was needed, didn't have it, no time to get it. I was due to go on vacation and needed my new license.

I've had mine for a year or so. I live in Georgia and it lists all the items needed. I was a good little citizen and had it all with me, no utility bills since they are all in honey's name not mine. The person didn't even ask for anything, just took my old license and that was that.

We are in MD. My DH, DM, and I went the beginning of Nov. We are not due for another year or 2 but wanted to get it over with. Because of that they would not let us make an appointment so we just walked in right at opening on a Thursday which we heard is a less crowded day. We brought more documents than we thought we would need. Since I am married I had my marriage license plus my birth certificate and my old and current SS card but all they wanted was my driver’s license, passport, current SS card, and my 2 proofs of address which was my bank statement and car registration. My DH used his voter registration card and utility bill as proof of address. I forget what DM used. We got taken right away and were in and out. My DH and I received ours in the mail the following Tuesday. My DM waited almost a month before calling about not getting hers and found out it was mailed the same day as ours and apparently got lost so she had to order a duplicate and pay the $20 again but could do that online and it came very fast. They do not change the expiration date if you go early so when our licenses are actually up for renewal we will have to pay again and then it will get in the regular cycle of 6 years or whatever it is but we won’t have to go in can do it online.

Same here in Texas. I did them for my whole family - no muss, no fuss. Got them in the mail a week later.
