I know this must sound strange, but did you ever notice that all "Disney" places have the same smell (scent). It doesn't matter if your cruising, on a ride at the parks or any of ther resorts, even the bathrooms, they all have that distinked "Disney" smell.....Well my question is how do they do that?

Can't help you...all I could smell on our cruise last week was salmon....everywhere.....

Disney uses a unique air deoterizer (not sure of the name) that they use at all of their properties. In some cases it is large canisters that is set on a timer to freshen up a large room or open space. Warning here is a Disaney spoiler don't read futhur unless you want to know a smelly secret.........

The smell on Main Street USA, of the fresh baked cookies? From a can. The cookies in most cases aer not even baked in the location they are sold. That sweet smell from the sweet shop? Canned. It is all a marketing tool to lure you in to buy stuff. I would imagine if Disney owned a car dealership there would be a canned smell of leather! LOL!

The cast members at my local Disney Store thought I was crazy when I told them that their store smelled just like "It's a Small World"! I thought I was just odd....I have extremely sensetive nasal passages, and smell memory is a big thing for me. Our first cruise was 3 years ago for our anniversary. I am a teacher...needless to say, I get lots of soap/lotion from students (and it is all appreciated). As I was packing for the trip, I just grabbed a matching soap/lotion combo w/o paying attention to the scent. A while after we got home, it was time to change the soap in my shower. Again, I didn't pay attention to what I grabbed, I just grabbed something and stuck it in the shower. As I was washing, I kept having the most distinct feeling of being on the boat! Then it dawned on me that I was using the same scent as I had taken on our cruise. So, now a scent that would have probably never been my favorite just b/c of personal preference, is the 1 fragrance that if Bath and Body Works ever stops making, I will have to go stock up on. Any time I need to feel happy, I can literally just open the lotion, and I feel better!
Soooo, what I took a long time to say is that I know what you mean, and have experienced it with regard to Disney several times!

krhardy,

I know exactly what you mean! Our last trip to Orlando, we stayed at a Vacation House and we forgot to bring hand soap so we stopped at Publix and bought some milk & honey soap.

When we got home, we bought the same soap and now everytime we use it, we think of our last trip!

I really wish we could BUY that scent that Disney uses cus I LOVE it!!! :cool1:

I have noticed the Disney scent. When I smell it, I know I am really there. It actually makes me happy

Many years ago we went to EPCOT. In the France area, there is a patisserie (bakery) selling croissants and such and the smell outside the shop is very alluring. At the time, I thought it was the butter being baked into the pastries. After reading this thread, I now believe it must have come from a can. How dissapointing.

Just like in Vegas where they pump in alot of oxygen to keep people awake. There aren't very many windows and definately no clocks. It's all a plan!!

It's probably the same reason the beds are so uncomfortable on Disney property, to get you out and spending your $.

At Disneyland and Calif Adv. we always thought we were smelling the burnt waffle cones from the ice cream shop, but one day I was working in my yard and smelled Disneyland! It was the lady next door making home made tortillas, so know we know it comes from the tortilla factory at Calif Adv!

On our recent cruise, April 16th, I was taking the stair sback to the stateroom and a CM was spraying the carpet/stairs with a freshner. I thought at first she must be cleaning the carpet or something but no...she just squirting the freshner on a few stairs and walked up a few more and squirted those too. It sure did smell good! :)

Thanks Thom, I did mean H20! Have you ever been to Vegas? They throw all kinds of things at you, including a splash of water to keep you awake!

Actually, thanks for the catch. I feel stupid, fingers were a little quicker than the brain. Not to mention the lack of sleep due to the little ones of late. Can't get rid of this flu bug.

Whenever we return from our stays at POR, I purposefully don't unpack the suitcase for a day or two (I always do all the laundry the day before we leave so they are all clean clothes), then when I open it it smells just like POR. Sounds silly, but smells/fragrences do transport us "back" for a few moments.

Thanks for this thread! I thought I was the only one who noticed "the Disney smell".

I did know about the "baking aromas", though. My DH says that he's found a way to make our fortune so that we can continue to pay for our cruises...he wants to develop an air "freshener" which smells like frying peppers and onions. He says that all the men he knows would love it! :rotfl: He always thinks that my kitchen smells wonderful--like maybe I baked pies or cookies (like I really have time to do that during the week). I make my own potpourri for my simmer pot. I use vanilla, cinnamon and cloves--smells very much like the bakery on Main Street!

In Vegas they do not pump oxygen into the casinos, however what they do do is re-circulate the air quite often and at a lower temp. so you do feel more "refreshed" in the casino. Thanks to all who responded, its amazing the most of the scents are "canned". A marketing genius at work!!!!

Actually, I have a very good friend that works for one of the "premiere" hotels/casino's on the strip. At least at this hotel, they do in fact direct pure oxygen onto the casino floor. FWIW, that is what he told us.
