Did you ever have a giant stoplight in your lunchroom in school?

DD's school has one of these. It's ridulous. The lunchroom has 10 tables so often there are that many classes (3rd-5th grade) in it at a time and when there are 200 kids in a room, it's gonna be noisy, KWIM? Sometimes the aides do turn the lights out which means no talking. I have seen the light immediately go to red as soon as they allow the kids to talk. And they aren't being loud or yelling, they are just talking. Sometimes the aides ignore the traffic light altogether.

My son's preschool has a stoplight in it for time out purposes. It's a giant stoplight, and each child has a clothespin with his/her name on it. If you're behaving fine, your clothespin is clipped to the green light. If you're cruising for a time out but just not there yet, you're on yellow. If you're in time out, you're on red. I had never heard of this before, and when he told me about it, I thought it was a great idea.

My daughter's kindergarten class has something like that only they have smiley face, straight face and sad face. I never really associated it with the mean stoplight I had until I read your post. I guess it is pretty much the same thing though.

My son had a stop light in the lunchroom in a Catholic Elementary school!! He'd forgotten all about it until I started reading this thread!!

Our elementary school had it for a month-long trial period. The kids hated it and the 5th graders actually put together a very comprehensive and respectful petition which they presented to the principal. He wasn't thrilled with the light anyhow and was impressed with the kids' opinions, so out went the light. Lunch should be a time for the kids to relax a bit, not worry constantly about the "talk light".
