Did you ever consider naming your kids something else?

A couple days ago, my son was doing homework for health class all about names...what your name meant, what other names your parents considered your you, what you would of been called if you were born the opposite sex..... Anyway, this got a conversation going with the kids. They each wanted to know these answers. Both my daughters, when they found out another name choice (girl names) liked the other name better! My DD Jeana Rose would of been Heather Rose. Her grandmother, Jean (DH mom) passed away 2 months before Jeana was born and we named her after her grandmother. With Jessica, I REALLY wanted to name her Kylie after my son Kyle who was stillborn the year before she arrived. I got a lot of flack from my family who told me it was 'too soon' to use that name  I gave in and we used Jessica instead. Now she doesn't like that name because it is so common.

Maybe we should not of had this conversation!!:bounce:

We had picked out Kimberly Grace as a girl name for my DS. We also discussed Elizabeth Nicole for a girl. These names might get used in the future if we have daughters.

For boys names we considered Ryan for a while before we settled on Nathan then we started playing with middle names. DS could have been Nathan Cole or Nathan Lore but instead we stuck with Nathan Alexander.

There were other names that I liked but they had common nicknames which I did not like. The names we ended up choosing are biblical and do not have nicknames associated with them.

I wanted my children addressed by the names they were given so was aware that we needed to stay away from those sorts of names in order to not be fighting it all the time.

I always wanted to have a son named either Ivan or Evan. My DH didn't like either of those names because they weren't common enough. I knew that I didn't want my children to have names that everyone else had. For a girl, I wanted to name her Avery.

Well, since we adopted older children, I couldn't even consider changing their names. I know that other's have done this, but we figured that although the kids were happy to join us in America, they were still going to go through a big adjustment in having to learn English, etc., so we kept their names... Ivan and Kristina. My DH loves the name Ivan now. His nickname is Vanya, or Vanishka. Their full names are Ivan Alexander and Kristina Marina. We had considered Kristina Yekaterina, but decided that it was kind of mean to give her the initials KY. Eventually, she could be teased about that in Jr. or Sr. High.

The only thing that Kristina doesn't like about her name is that everyone in America spells it with a Chr instead of Kr.

I really wanted to name my ds Luke, but my SO didn't want to. My mom told my ds when he was younger what I wanted to name him. He was about 3 at the time. He refused to answer to Dakota, we had to call him Luke for awhile.;)

I really wanted to name my dd Kaytlin Breanne, but my SO didn't like the name Breanne (he didn't like the name Kaytlin too much either, he's so fussy;) ). Her middle name is Kaytlin. She likes to be called Kayt or Kaytlin a lot just to aggrevate him.:teeth:

We considered a few other names for Jacob. Jacob was DH's first choice. I really liked Jonah but was fine with Jacob too. We chose a rather creative way to decide who got to name him. DH decided he'd give in on the circumcision issue and not have him circumcised, and I gave in and named him Jacob. :teeth:

Funny a person named Colleen started this thread - we almost named our DD Colleen.;)

I'm not sure how old your kids are now, Trapped Parent, but nicknames can emerge from the weirdest places. My DH was always supposed to be James. Everyone who grew up with him still calls him that. He is Jim to me, and to most of his friends and business associates to whom he's become close, he is Jimmy. It bugs his mother to no end. His really good friends call him Snake, but no one will tell me why. Actually, I think it's because they all forget why.

I wanted Kelsea's name to be Katie. Kathleen, Kathrine, Caitlyn, I was open to suggestions, but I wanted Katie. It didn't happen though.

We were going to name our son Scott. When his father and I were filling out the form for the birth certificate, his father said, "I changed my mind".

My nephew, who is a few months younger than my son, is named Scott. :( :D

i went through dozens of names. my son is Zachary Scott. i thought about elijah, tyler, mathew, micheal. lots of others.

if he had been a girl ( i found out at 5 months so i stopped looking at girl names early) i had decided on zachary for a boy or Zoe for a girl. the middle name HAD to be Olivia. its a family name thing. i have since changed my mind. if i was able to have more. and was blessed with a girl, she would be Olivia Rose. i love that name and i cant get anyone to use it!

We planned to name DS Andrew Stephen, until it one day occurred to us what his initials would be. Our last name begins with "S"

We realized that monogram wouldn't be so dandy...

Yup.....My DD Holly (sydally9367 here on the boards) came VERY close to being named Penny. Our last name was Lane....therefore she would have been Penny Lane. Her Dad was a VERY big Beatles fan.

I still wish relatives didn't talk us out of it, I really liked it. Still do.

So instead she was named after a street that was on his snow plow route. :D :D :D

OH GOOD GRIEF MOM! :o :o

Even though I didn't end up with Penny as a name, we've told that story to so many people, that they still sing "Penny Lane" to me all the time

I like my name thank you very much.....tee hee.....even if I am a road!

We had always said if we had a boy his name would be Seth Michael.

If we had a girl is wher the problems were. I like different names. I wanted to name my little girl Jurusha, or Pasley. Well DW threw a fit, (so did everybody else) I also like Katie, and Ellen. But we didn't have to worry since we had a boy.

We both loved the name Katie, but we each have a cousin with a dd named Katie (well, Katti and Kaytee). One lives near us, and we knew it would get confusing yelling for Katie and having his cousin's dd come inside instead of our dd.;)

Well, our Cameron was going to be Zachary up until a couple of days before he was born. DH finally told me that he didn't like Zachary. He went to work finding something we could agree on -- never did agree on Cameron but that's what came out of my mouth in the delivery room. He would have been a Cassandra if he was a girl.

Walker was my mothers maiden name and we found it in a baby name book. I wanted something a little different to compliment Cameron. When I saw Walker in the book, I think we decided at that point we would use that if we had a boy.

This is a funny topic, because my son Michael just asked me the other day why we named him that. I really wanted Andrew but my husband had a mean Uncle Andy and he couldn't get past that name. He also wanted to name him Michael Jordon, because he was born on the 23rd and thought that would be neat. I said no to that one (not sure why I didn't like it then) and he became Michael John. He would have been Carly Marie if he was a girl.

Well, my sister was originally going to be named Katrina, but my grandfather Paul died just wks before she was born, so she became Paula instead. She still sometimes wishes she were Katrina. I think I was going to be Michelle at one point but then my parents got tired of the name. I've been told I probably would have been Eric if I had been a boy.
