Red Cross message conveys good news
POSTWAR IRAQ: DESERT DISPATCH

By FRED DODD

AD DIWNIYAH, Iraq -- The South Bend Marines' company gunnery sergeant received a message late Wednesday night that there was an American Red Cross message at the battalion headquarters for one of Engineer Company B's Marines.

Red Cross messages often mean that there's trouble at home, but the Marines were relieved to hear that this message had been for good news. Lance Cpl. Sean Justice, 26, of North Judson, is a new father -- his wife had a baby boy Tuesday, the message said.

Unfortunately, Justice is one of four South Bend Marines who went straight to Camp Betio, Kuwait, when the company left Camp Chesty a few days ago. A phone call was made to Camp Betio to relay the message.

The South Bend Marines finished their latest mission Thursday building more three-man latrines and waited for their next mission or their next move closer to home.

Cpl. Bobby Knight, 25, of South Bend, is one of the Engineer Company B Marines who are eager to leave. "I just want to say hello to my parents," he said.

"I'll take a couple weeks off of work to spend some time with my family and friends, relax and enjoy life. I'll think about what I participated in here and put things in perspective. It doesn't get to you now, but it will when we get home -- where we were at and what we were doing."

On the other side of the world Knight delivers Bonnie Doon ice cream to supermarkets and restaurants. That's something that sounds pretty tasty here in the desert. "I'd love to have some right now," Knight said.

Although he was only able to give his boss a couple of days notice when the unit was activated, the company took the news well. "He wished me the best and said he'd pray for me and that my position would still be there when I get back.

"I started working there in August. I enjoy that job a lot. It's a small company, the people are really nice, and it pays really well."

Knight is a heavy equipment operator for the Marine Corps. He said that the highlight of being here was back at Camp Chesty when the bulldozer operators had so much work to do building berms and leveling the ground for other units to set up bivouacs.

He hopes to eventually get into operating heavy equipment in the civilian world. "I've been trying the last couple of years to get into the Operating Engineers Union Local 150, but there's a waiting list.

"The first sergeant told us about the helmets to hard hats program (to help military engineers get similar civilian jobs), and I'll check into that too when I get back."

He also looks forward to hitting the lakes when he gets home. He has a couple of Jet Skis that he uses at Diamond Lake, in Cassopolis, and at Lake Michigan. He says he plays a lot of sports, too. He says he plays softball in the summer and basketball in the winter.

Speaking of basketball, you can't talk about Bobby Knight without mentioning the Indiana/Texas Tech connection. Knight says he's caught heck over his name since his family moved from southern Illinois to South Bend when he was 10.

"In my sophomore year at LaSalle, we were in the middle of basketball practice one day when WSBT came charging in asking 'Where's Bobby Knight?' " He also said that Purdue's head coach, Gene Keady, was in the stands one time to recruit a Clay player. "There was some write-up about it saying that it must've been weird -- Keady there watching Bobby Knight play.

"Then I had one drill instructor who always called me 'Private Bobby.' "

Marine Cpl. Bobby Knight, 25, of South Bend, goes up for a shot Tuesday at Al Qadisiya University in Iraq. The South Bend-based Marines won four straight games against other Marine companies Tuesday.

Yeh, well you guys just beat me to the punch this morning!! :D

His little brother, Kevin (15) opened the paper and said, "Where the HECK did he get those shorts?!"

I'm sure that after 3 weeks in the same uniform, it felt pretty good to strip down to his skivvies. I also imagine that if he had ANY clue that his picture would end up on the front page of the South Bend Tribune, he would have NEVER picked up that basketball.

He's actually a pretty shy guy.;)

Did you say where one of the first things he said was that he wanted to say "hi" to his mom and dad? That's when I started crying.

OK - my day is complete!!!!:Pinkbounc

That is just so cool! He is quit the local hero around there I am sure.

I had tears in my eyes too, when he said the first thing he wanted to do was say hi to his parents.

That really made my day reading that. I am so sure that seeing his picture really made you smile.

That's a great article. One for the scrapbook Patty! :) :) :)

It's OK Pam...but as his mom, I'm wondering why he's the only one in his skivvies???

I'm sure when he went out there to play basketball, he had no idea that Fred Dodd was shooting away and that this photo would be sent all over the world wide web!!!;)

I would say it was a gave of "shirts" vs. "skins".

Patty I'm so happy for you and your family - what a great thing to see and read today!

PS - I agree with the Hubba, Hubba statement (but don't tel my DH) :)

How great, Patty. You must be so proud. Hope he's home and safe soon.

.. or my vices if I admit that I said "Hubba Hubba" when I found out he drives a Bonnie Doon Ice Cream Truck!! ha ha!!

A Homegrown Hero, Good Looks, Great Family AND he drives an ice cream truck!! YowZa!! ha ha!! Now, why is it he's still single.....?

ckr - you're a hoot kiddo!!!

The kid is just too darn pickey!!! His younger sisters (twins) are always trying to "hook him up". Don't know what's wrong with that boy! (Actually - I think I do know....had his heart "broke" a couple of years ago, and he's gun shy).

His sister Colleen (pictured on the right below) says she's sending his name in for the next Bachelor TV Show as soon as he gets home. ;)

NOW that is definitely one for the scrapbook......!!!!!!!!!
what a great story, picture and all......skivvies or full uniform still a great lookin' guy...... also broke out in tears when I read just first thing he wanted to do was say hi to his parents. what a sweetie..

Patty-

Nothing wrong with him being gun shy, might save his heart some heart ache.

I just love reading these articles. It is so cool. I wish that every parent had an embedded reporter for their child. Guess that would be a few too many reporters, though. Huh?

Glad to see them having a break with some fun in the sun.

Well, that just made my day. What a great story!! :D And ya just gotta love that photo! ;) :p

This just made my day!! I'm so proud to be one of Bobby's Cyber Aunts!!! :teeth:

Wow! Great to see him looking, uh well. ;) I may be an old married lady but the "hubba hubba" definitely crossed my mind too! Then the mom kicked in and it was awww....please pass the tissues. :)

Deb

How great to read an article about Bobby & with photo's too!
