Did we really just buy DVC at BLT? Taking MIL in Dec! Acronyms abound!

So one of the questions brought up my time as a cast member......so thought I would share a little more for fun!

CAST MEMBER MEMORIES

So I thought I would take a second to share a few of my favorite stories from my time as a cast member on the college program. While it was back in 1996, almost 14 years ago, the memories are still fresh as ever of the magic!

So enjoy!

I worked at Hollywood and Vine at the 'then' Disney-MGM Studios. The restaurant at the time only served breakfast and lunch- buffet style. It was decorated then, the same as it looks now- the 50's style hollywood diner. And i had to wear that same awful costume- light green and pink, cafeteria lady looking get up- including a hairnet! plus hose, with black shoes (usually tennis type shoes for comfort!).

I loved being part of the magic. I lived in Vista Way, apartments off of 535, just across I-4 basically from the DTD area (behind Vistana Villages). It was a 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment on the bottom floor, 6 of us shared it. As a senior in college at the time that had already been living with my boyfriend for a while (3 years), sharing an apt with 5 others and sharing a room with one was quite a change!

Luckily all my roomies were ‘older’ too, except one that was a freshman. In fact, two of my roomies were doing the college program for the second time around. Both went on to work for Disney after---one in guest relations and later Disney weddings. She dated one of the Disney ambassadors from a few years ago too. She finally moved back home just a few years ago and still works in events. The other one still works at Disney to this day, although her gig just got shut down (the Kodak lab at the exit of the journey into imagination ride- the professor type character in the lab coat doing the little show with the big camera). She was ‘friends’ with characters for a long time and worked in the parades and Hunchback Show at HS before it shut down.

I fortunately drove my car down so i had a car, but many kids didn't and Disney provided shuttles to and from work (and grocery store etc.). I had to always leave early for work- as I had to park backstage in what is now the Tower of Terror! it used to be cast member parking lot. Then a van would pick us up if we parked far back and take us to the door. Scan your ID, walk in and off to costuming to pick up my costume. Not all cast members get to keep their costumes at home- many/most have to pick it up before each shift and change in locker rooms there. Disney cleans them for you. So you had to have time to get your costume and change. That was a pain!

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

The job itself was not all roses. I did love 'Traditions', the training every CM goes through. It included some great history, trivia and tours of the parks backstage, including a tour in the utilidors---where there is the barbershop, cafeteria, computer lab and more. It would have been fun to work in the MK and be there all the time! Backstage at HS was okay too- there was also a cafeteria, HR areas etc. I always walked into 'work' by coming through the cast entrance at Starring Rolls bakery, there is a little gate/walk way there for CMs only. It was so fun walking in each morning (very early- remember- breakfast shift!)---the park was freshly sprayed/hosed down, music already playing and totally empty. I would cross the boulevard over to H&V taking it all in.

The job itself was hard. I was usually bussing tables, washing silverware or serving on the line. We served the food as people walked through pointing to what they wanted. Eventually i got to cashier.

So two of my favorite memories from my time there.

#1- Can I have your autograph???
While some tasks at work were not fun or glamorous at all as mentioned (i.e. loading heavy trays of jello cups into a fridge all day).........there were some fun ones. When it was slow- our manager would have one of us assigned as a greeter at the front. One day, i had this job and they gave me an autograph book and pen too. My job was to greet guests and ask any children for THEIR autograph! This was so much fun for me and a big hit with guests. They would come in and i would get down to the child's level and say "hey, Mickey heard you were here and he wanted to get your autograph. He is really busy right now and asked me to do it for him.". The kids' faces would just light up! It was such a fun little gig- and i loved spreading a little magic to make someone's day! It is those special little touches and details that make disney what it is.

#2- Stars, PR and Guest Service!
So I was fortunate enough to work at WDW during the 25th anniversary. Yes, fun, but disappointing as well to see that awful pepto-bismol pink castle every day- you guys remember it?
6a00c2251dc877f21900cd9786a5ccf9cc-320pi

Anyhow- there was a big press event planned on October 1st for the big party at HS. It was at night and for press/media only. Basically they had some bands come in to play, live entertainment and each restaurant venue was changed to serve something specific.

ry%3D400

H&V was designated as a dessert area. So media could come in there to get dessert and champagne. Other venues served appetizers and other food. so the party started and we served guests all night long. I had one female reporter that came in and spilled her champagne all over herself and well it was a little chilly that night- we didn't want her walking around wet all night. Her shirt was soaked. So, my coworker and I kicked into action- utilizing one of the BEST policies I think disney instills in their CMs.......fix the problem. So we did. I loved how disney trusts and empowers its members to make decisions when it affects guest service. We were empowered to run across the street to the store there and grab a nice embroidered 25th anniv sweatshirt. We brought it back over to the restaurant and gave it to her...free of charge. We didn't have to ask a manager or get permission. We were authorized to fix the problem ourselves, which I loved. She was thrilled and the smile on her face said it all. I loved that part of the job. Spreading a little magic, whether it was a free sweatshirt, or replacing an ice cream cone that a little kid dropped (we had a little ice cream station).

here is me and my roomies (and a few neighbors) at our big Grad Ball party, which took place after hours in the Land!

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

Another perk I loved there was working during the holidays. I started my program in late August 1996 and was done on January 2nd. It was about 4 months and a few weeks. Of course being low on the totem pole meant working over thanksgiving and Christmas, but it was fun. A LOT of hours though. I think I probably worked like 60 hours Christmas week and it was SO BUSY!! One day, I never saw the end of the line. I was cashiering on Christmas day and the line just went out the door for our cafeteria. I don’t think I saw it ever end until closing- it was literally that crowded! We managed to try and find time to do a nice holiday meal together with our roomies and neighbors, but sometimes it was at midnight or crazy times! Lol But we had fun with our newly created ‘family’. One perk of working during the holidays was the cast member discount. I was given I think 4 free passes (one day tickets) I could give to friends or family. Plus we were given this ticket that allowed us 50% off merchandise for an ENTIRE day!!

ry%3D400
There was like a two week period within which we had to use that discount/ticket. When we decided to use it, the store we first went to would put a hole punch in it of some kind and a stamp to identify that this was our ‘shopping day’ and we couldn’t use it after that day. You could go to DTD, resort stores, park stores- anything owned by Disney. I went nuts, to say the least. I bought dishes, glasses, toys, clothes, ornaments – you name it, I bought it. All on credit and I was still paying it off years later, since Disney didn’t pay us much while working there (basically they took your ‘rent’ and utilities out of your check, so very little was leftover). Anyhow- it was amazing to shop with that discount! The funny thing is- I had gotten VERY ill with the flu. They had sent me home from work, I was coughing so bad. I went to the Disney med center and got meds and did have the flu. I was miserable for a week and missed a week of work. Finally, I was feeling a little better, but time was running out for me to use my ‘shopping day/discount’. So I called in sick one more time, even though I was feeling better, so I could use my shopping day. I know- bad bad!! But I was still not 100%. Anyhow- while at World of Disney, who do I run into- yep, one of my managers. OOPSS!!! He was super cool about it. I still didn’t look that great, so he knew I still wasn’t up to par and needed to use my shopping day too. I was so thankful he was nice about it.
So there are some of my memories that were special to my time there, and I think really showcase the disney magic.........so what if i was sharing a 3 bedroom apartment (and my room itself) with 5 other strangers (who quickly became my friends!).....or if i had to bus tables while others were on vacation having a ball? or if I got paid minimum wage and barely had enough to live on??? it was all worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat and i only regret i didn't take more advantage of my time there by doing more or applying for an advanced internship (very hard to get). BUT..........at least my love for all things disney parks can live on now with our DVC purchase!!!

I need to hit the lottery so I can go work as a CM. I would probably do DisneyLand though since it gets so hot in Florida. Or DisneyLand Paris, or HongKong. Ah, screw all that, if I hit the lottery I would visit all the Disney Parks, then go check out the resort in Hawaii. Take the Disney Cruises to the Caribbean, Mediteranian, and Alaska. Then after that, um, hey I'm rich and retired, go back to step 1.
Come on lottery

So Good to see you again! (online anyhow! lol). yes, so excited to go back again! I didn't know you were pregnant!!!! CONGRATS!!!! I need to go read your posts and catch up then! what awesome news. :wizard: Yep, i had 'planned' not to take Will until he was say 4 or 5. but NOPE, ain't happening. So what if he doesn't remember last December (he was 2), I remember. And he remembers some of it and loves looking through the photo album- in fact, he points out everyone in our pics and even makes the same poses as he does in the pics, so even if he doesn't remember, we do and it is still a great memory! you will have that too, whether you go when your son is a baby or older! ;):thumbsup2

Thanks!! We found out in February. :cloud9: We are SO excited to take him! There was a little boy, probably a little younger than 1, meeting Mickey & Minnie in line ahead of us on this quick weekend trip, and the photographer had to keep calling his name to get his attention because he was just looking at the characters in complete awe! It was about the cutest thing ever, and I can't wait to have those experiences with our little one! And traveling with a toddler will make it an entirely new vacation, I think!! I can't wait!!

I've actually met that roommate of yours! When we were at Disney in Jan of 08, DH was wearing a Tigers baseball hat and she told us how she had used to live in Michigan. Then she took our photo with the giant camera. I saw the photo a while back of her. She seemed totally sweet. what a bummer they closed her gig!

That sounds like a serious amount of fun! I can't imagine how your heart sank when you saw your manager!

Thanks so much for sharing your "cast life" with us. I too think it would be an awesome opportunity for college aged students.

yeah, you definitely can't count on actually making much money working there, unless you are salaried and as we all know, those positions are VERY difficult to come by. Paris gets too cold! lol- yes the resort in Hawaii, that's the ticket for the perfect job!

i am so thrilled for you guys!!! What great news. You will have a blast sharing the magic with your little one! I really can't wait to take Pooh this time- he will be at the age where he can talk now and really recognizes the characters and will be very into the rides too. It was a blast last year too, but this year will be even better since he turns 3.

I'm sorry but this is already my plan and you can't have it

too funny!! she's worked there for ages. Yep, from Detroit! yeah, i've posted the photo of me and her before on here- here is she with me on a trip in 2004! so i know she has worked there at least 6 years. I hope to see her again in December- but not sure where she will be working then. She is the funnest person ever- so crazy and quite the actress. I remember she used to always want to dress up in my work costume (which I was allowed to take home occassion). She liked to put on the little pink apron and hat and pretend she was barbie. She would always be playing 'dress up' around the apartment. One day i came home and she had huge princess lea buns in her hair and a big white dress/robe on. LOL And when our program was over, she was so distraught about missing us all and especially her actual roommate- Kitty- so she wrote post it notes all over the apartment and room saying 'don't go Kitty!'. So darn cute, she is! Aside from her, the other roomies worked at- Kitty from NY at the turkey leg wagon and Pecos bill in frontierland (probably worst job out of us), Heather from MI worked at the Land Pavilion at the time- MC for that 'save the planet' movie upstairs, Claudine from AZ worked strollers at Epcot (and later guest relations and weddings!), Jenny (the young one) worked in culinary/kitchen at Crystal Palace (training for culinary career), and lastly, my roomie- Mary from PA was uh, friends with Pluto, Buzz in the parade, Rafkiki etc. She worked at the Studios with me, but i hardly ever saw her. Those friends of characters sort of have their own little 'club'. lol

Such great memories! Thanks for sharing! I'd love to read more. :goodvibes I especially loved this one. Are all CMs still trained to "fix the problem?" We had an experience at Epcot our first trip. We had purchased a funnel cake and were walking & eating through America. My DD was behind me and suddenly I see a lady coming towards me gesturing wildly and pointing....DD was behind me winding up for the scream (you know it...the silent scream before the LOUD scream) because a seagull had swooped down and taken her funnel cake out of her hand and bit her finger! :scared1: We all surrounded her to make sure she was ok. A CM came running over from the DVC kiosk and took my husband back to the funnel cake shop and got him a new one. As he was walking back to where we were waiting for him, ANOTHER seagull (or the same blasted one!) swooped down and took the ENTIRE funnel cake off the plate and took off with it! (dropped it of course) Sooooo....the kind CM took DH back to the funnel cake shop AGAIN and got him ANOTHER funnel cake! He covered it with a plate and and guarded it with his life! :lmao: It made an impression on us that the CM was so kind to our family. :goodvibes To this day, DD doesn't like seagulls! :rotfl:

wow, too funny on the seagulls- now i know to guard my funnel cake with my life! :lmao::rotfl: but yes, as part of training, they instill that you should do whatever you can to ensure guest service. Of course some CM's have a bad day and don't go the extra mile, but most do. Heck, it is fun to 'fix a problem' and see that smile from a guest when you went above and beyond. Of course it depends on their actual work location too. i think so much of corporate america could benefit if they just used a little of the disney guest service values and empowered their employees more. :wizard:

DAY TWO- Saturday, 12/5/10

So Day two- our first full real day- Sunday, December 5th. So after catching Illuminations the night before (hopefully), we won’t be back to our room and in bed probably until 11pm or later. But, the parks call and so does Pooh Bear, so time to rise and shine! Today’s plan takes us to the Magic Kingdom for the first time! I love walking down Main Street early in the morning, hearing the music and just enjoying the sights and sounds. Just as Walt meant it to be. We have an ADR for 8:05am for Crystal Palace. The park itself doesn’t open until 9am. So our plan is to be up by 6:30-6:45am and walk or monorail over to the MK from BLT around 7:30, so we can get in and explore Main Street a bit maybe before heading over to CP- depends how early they will let us in.

ry%3D400

So Crystal Palace is a tradition for us. We’ve done it every trip and always breakfast. We just love the breakfast buffet here and who doesn’t love Pooh? I mean come on people, it’s Pooh Bear! Well my son loves Pooh Bear. We did this breakfast last December and he had a ball. I don’t think he actually remembers it, but he loves looking through our photo album and seeing the pictures of it. He asks us every day when he can go eat with Pooh Bear again. In fact, when I put him to bed each night, it is the last words out of his mouth. So CP has a lot to live up to for my little guy!

ry%3D400

So the plan is head over, get down Main Street, take a few pics, check in and enjoy CP! I am hoping we can be done by 9, but we will see. I plan to ask for the check in advance, so we can be paid up and ready to go when we need to. I’d like to beat the crowds over to rope drop, so we can head to Dumbo first thing.

ry%3D400

After Dumbo, we will probably grab a Peter Pan FP, then hit Pooh. The maybe the carousel and snow white- just get Fantasyland tackled! We’ve been able to get all of that done in about an hour and a half before (when doing it at RD), so here’s hoping for the same luck. I figure after that, maybe we head to Tomorrowland and get a Space Mtn FP and then do Buzz or Monsters or the TTA. From there, we will just go with the flow- maybe spend some time at Toontown. Last year was the first time I ever really spent time there- we rode Barnstormer with our son 3x during MVMCP with no line and saw Mickey’s house. We didn’t do much else. So we might explore it before it is gone!

No official plans for lunch here- but we usually end up at Cosmic Ray’s or Pecos Bill’s for the selection and toppings bar. So when we get hungry, we will eat. We will do as much as we can until our Pooh gets tired and then take a break back at the hotel for a bit- probably about 2pm or so.

I figure we will take a break in our lovely one bedroom at BLT from 2pm-4pm or so. Maybe swim and explore a bit, depending on if we need naps or not. I am really looking forward to the quick and convenient transportation options for MK from BLT. I know we can walk over or monorail pretty fast. I am going to love being so close, which is one of the reasons we chose it as our DVC home.

kitchen.jpg

BayLakePool2.jpg

After our break, we will spend the evening in Hollywood Studios. We currently have two ADRs that evening at Sci Fi diner, one for 6:30pm and one for 7:45pm. I need to figure out which time we want and then cancel the other. I might do the later time. Any suggestions here? We have eaten at Sci Fi many times and I know even with an ADR, you usually will wait 15-20 minutes in peak times. Plus, it is near the exit of the Osborne lights area, so I figure the later we go, the less crowds we fight. So I think the 7:45 is best. We can make sure Pooh has a good lunch and snack to tide us over. He did really well this past December on our trip with the odd eating times we often had- with no consistency. One day we ate at 5pm, the next at 9pm for dinner. So he is pretty flexible, thankfully!
ry%3D400
So if I use the 7:45pm ADR for Sci Fi, then we will probably arrive HS about 5ish. We might go check out the wait times on RnR and ToT and grab a FP for one of them. Then probably head over and do Great Movie Ride- I know a lot of people hate this one, but I actually love it! We will probably play it by ear from there- maybe just shop, explore or let Pooh try out the HISTKs playground. He loved it last time. We will head to our 7:45pm dinner ressie and eat. I love the BLT soup here and skipped it last time, since we were on FD and it would have been extra. But I plan to get that this time and maybe share a burger with my son. I did the ribs last time and they were just okay. Hopefully be done by 9ish with dinner.

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

The park officially closes at 8pm this night, but has evening EMH until 11pm. So by the time we finish dinner, it will be EMH! I figure we will check out the Osborne lights then, the crowds should have died down by then. We will take our time going through and getting pics. This past December, we found that it was most crowded right when the lights came on and probably for the next 2 hours after that. We visited the lights later at night during EMH and it was such a difference in the crowds. Pooh really enjoyed it. He loved the fake snow. We have a great picture of him putting his hand up to catch the snow. This is one of our favorite memories now. We have it in a photo album at home and everytime he sees that picture, he makes the same pose- arm up and mouth wide open. We love it. That’s one of those moments that I think put DH over the edge to buy DVC- seeing Pooh’s reaction and the joy on his face did it! So we can’t wait to share this unbelievable site with my MIL!!
ry%3D400
ry%3D400

Then I know RnR, ToT, TSM and Muppets are open for EMH- but my sister also ran into the Disney playhouse area and they had a ‘dance party’ with characters. It was empty and her two kids got the characters all to themselves- so we will check that out too. So we will check all those out and see what we are up to doing.

We caught the Lights, Motor Action show this past December and have no desire to do it again. I also have no desire to do the backlot tour- it seems a total waste of time these days. So unless DH and his MIL really want to do that tour, we will skip those two things at least. Star Tours will be close for refurb. We also don’t care about American Idol. B&B and Indy will be left up to DH and MIL if they want to try those or not. If so, we could catch the 5:30pm Indy show when we arrive. I haven’t seen either of these the past few trips. We also plan to skip Fantasmic probably. DH and I don’t like to wait for anything and just hate the huge crowds that build, plus it might be a little too much for Pooh. So we plan to skip it probably this trip. There isn’t one on this night anyhow.
ry%3D400
We will save PlayHouse Disney for our day time visit to HS. Same goes for TSM, I know our chances of riding TSM when we arrive at 5pm are slim to none without like an hour wait (we won’t wait more than 20 minutes for anything usually). So we will save these two , plus maybe the animation tour for our day time visit. I’d like for DH to have a chance to do the drawing class if he wants- he used to love drawing. We will try and tackle as much of the other stuff as we can that night. The park closes at 11pm and we will stay as long as we can hold up! The funny thing is our son will rarely fall asleep during those late hours or sleep in his stroller, so we will just see how it goes and remain flexible to his needs.

It will be another long day, but with a nice 2-3 hour break in there, plus a nice sit down breakfast and a nice sit down dinner. This is the only day we have two sit down meals.

So today was THE day for Candlelight Processional Packages.....i am sure some of you (if anyone left reading) were also on the phone at the crack of dawn, coffee in hand, wondering when you might hear it's a small world blaring through the hold music. Never have I ever wished to hear that dreadful music, except.........for today.

I called at 5:59am CST- got the 'not open yet, call during business hours' message. Good- i have the right #. I continued to spend the next hour and a half calling repeatedly, from a landline and cell phone- redial, redial, redial. my poor finger is sore now. I got a busy signal, or the 50s guy saying 'all circuits are busy' OR the nice lady saying 'experiencing problems beyond our control, please try your call again later'. lovely voice, but man was i pissed after an hour.

I was keeping up on the CP package thread just to make sure i wasn't the only one experiencing the busy signal repeatedly. i wasn't, but didn't make me feel better! Finally, another kind DISer that I've had dinner with before saw me post my frustration and offered to book mine for me. She was already on hold. I believe she was on hold for at least 30-50 minutes or more. I got the call from her that she had booked my ressie!! woo hoo!:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

12/8- Le Cellier at 5:10pm for the 8:15 show with Jodi Benson

now, it is the most expensive package and the late show, which doesn't seem popular, but we figure that maybe Pooh will be really tired by then and sleep in our arms during the show. If not, one of us will most likely have to sit out with him at some point during the show. He just doesn't do well in the shows like that. But i will make DH get up and take him out if he starts fussing- but we really are hoping he will just pass out!

So did anyone else book the package?

Now all that is left is trying to get the Hacienda ressie when those are available!- hoping for our first night- 12/4~!

I'm definitely still here!!!! I'm SO glad that your CP ressie!!!!:banana::banana: I really wanted to go to the show, but DH wasn't really interested, and all of our nights were already booked! Thanks again for the LeCellier offer, I just wish it would have worked out for us! I'll cross my fingers that the little man will be all tuckered out from so much fun that he will sleep for you guys!!

Your day 2 plans sound great! I love the Osbourne lights in fact thanks to your pictures one of our resort nights I am going to head over there by myself and get some good video. The kids get bored when I wanna hang out there:confused3

Great job on the CLP! I got busy signals for 40 min then was on hold for 33 min. I got a good ressie but you will have to go to my PTR for that info :rolleyes1

Why haven't you made your way over to the DISmeet thread yet? There is also a facebook group

You haven't lost me! I am all caught up, your day 2 sounds awesome! I cannot wait to start thnking and planning my days, I love reading everyone else's as inspiration! And I already mentioned on December thread, but wanna say again, YAY on CP dinner package! Worked out well!

Congrats on getting that CLP dining package! Le Cellier + Jodi Benson.. amazing! :santa:

We're not doing the CP this year, I went last year with my sister on our trip & we enjoyed it, but it's not really DF's thing.. while we're there we might catch a glimpse of Whoopi Goldburg or Steven Curtis Chapman if we're strolling through World Showcase one evening :goodvibes

I'm here. I was without the internet for 5 days. Didn't want to be online too much during working hours.

Good to hear you got your cp ressies. We won't be doing the CP thing. I don't think my kids would like it much.
