Did they decrease the size of a carry on bag since last year ?

I was checking the size of our bags and it says Baggage may not exceed 22" x 14" x 9". I thought it was bigger than 9" ? Is that 9" tall or wide ?
I also wanted to know if we could take a sub lunchable with no drink in it but just the sub from home unopened ?

It has to have dimensions of 45" or less, that is the standard carry on size. So, it could be 25 by 10 by 10 etc.

I have never had any problem carrying food on as long as there is not a liquid/gel to worry about (that is if you are bringing it from home and have to go through security)

It differs by airline. United mentions 22" x 14" x 9" maximum but also mentions 45" maximum which latter, upon closer examination for this example, is redundant.

Made up sandwiches are okay but separate ingredients such as mayonnaise, if in larger quantity than the liquid and gel limits, will be confiscated.

These are the demensions listed on the JetBlue website for carry-on to fit in the overhead bin...these are huge compared to what I am use to!

To fit in the overhead bin, your item must not exceed: —for our Airbus A320: 26" L (66 cm) x 18" W (45.72 cm) x 12" H (30.48 cm) —for our EMBRAER 190: 24" L (60.96 cm) x 16" W (40.64 cm) x 10" H (25.4 cm)

Sorry to hijack your thread OP but I was thinking the opposite of you that when did carry-on's get to be so big! I guess who you fly really does make a difference.

Anyone have actual first hand knowledge about JetBlue and what fits in the overhead bins?

No, it cannot.

They give you two sets of numbers on purpose. The total has to be 45 inches or less AND each of the planes (height, width, and depth) have fall within 22 inches (height) x 14 inches (width) x 9 inches (depth). So, your 25 by 10 by 10 would be "illegal" based on two of the planes.

Now, you could have a piece of luggage that "sits" funny - where the height is longer than the width, so you may have to flip around the numbers (i.e. it would be 14x22x9), but the numbers give you the limits.

I just happened to check the size of my luggage this morning and found that the bag is slightly bigger than what is listed on the airline's website. I was about to post a question when I saw this thread.

I did some quick research, and it looks like a few airlines made changes to the requirements last summer/fall. Also, different lines have different size requirements. My bag fits Southwest which I've flown in the past, but not American which I'm flying in a couple of weeks.

Since I'm trying not to check a bag, I'll put the $50 (that I would have paid to check both ways) toward a new carry-on.

Remember the bag companies don't measure handles and wheels. the airlines do! So get out your OWN tape measure don't trust the tag!

Thanks for the tip! I'll be sure to take a tape measure with me. I'm also going to try to purchase a bag that has the wheels at the same level as the bottom of the bag - as opposed to adding inches for the wheels.

I would go for the lower measurements, they may revise them next time and your new bag will be too big. I know AirTran was high - 55" I think and they lowered it to 50". The problem is if the length will not fit wheels in, it has to go sideways which takes up alot more room in the overhead.

Ad dont assume that the airlines will use any common sense in enforcing the rules. My DH and I used to share a carry-on which was 18 X 14 X 11. This meant it would not fit in the sizer. After a few close calls, we now each carry a compliant bag. Instead of taking up 11 inches of the horizontal bin space, we now take up about 18 inches. But rules are rules. -- Suzanne

What do they do if you get there and try to carry on bag that is to big ? My bag measures 1 inch to long by what I just read on the Delta website. I took it last year in September and had no trouble. Now I'm wondering if maybe they are getting stricter and lowered the measurements ? Should I be worried or find another bag which I dont have right now and leave on Sunday?

From my experience with Delta you might be okay with a bag slightly large - or you might have to check the bag at the gate and send it to baggage claim. Alot depends on how full the flight is and what type of aircraft. MD88/90 aircraft (that Delta has many of) have small overhead bins. Once bins fill up, even small bags that are size compliant might have to be checked to baggage claim. (FYI-there is no charge at the gate if this happens)

Thanks I guess I will go ahead and try to take it as a carry on I measured it and it is 23x12x10 counting the wheels.

They could make you check it but I've found Delta to be pretty lenient. I can't believe some of the big bags that they let on. Last year I was on a flight and a girl got on with a bag so stuffed full it would not fit in the overhead top to bottom. The FA gave her a bag and she took jeans out and then a couple guys helped her force it in. Meanwhile they are holding up boarding.

Well I went and bought another bag I dont want to worry about the hassle of my bag not fitting.

That doesn't always work. If they use the sizer box at the gate, the 25" length will not fit.
