Did not get paid

Recently I started a new job at a new school (teacher). I had previously worked at a preschool/daycare. I stopped working there August 28th. So I was supposed to get paid for 3 days of work plus all my unused vacation time.
So I look in my bank account and no deposit. I text my former boss and she said she forgot. Even though I handed in a time sheet and even reconfirmed with her via text the day before.
She said she wont be able to pay me until the owner comes back on Monday.
Im so upset by this. I was a good employee there and the parents and children loved me. I feel she is being spiteful because I found a job at a public school.
Is there anything that I should do or just wait until Monday and hoped to get paid then?

It is the worst when something like this happens, but unfortunately has happened to me several times. I was stranded abroad with very little money because my manager thought I would be getting paid by my new store (but the store hadn't opened yet and I was in training). At another job, they were training someone on payroll and they made my check out to be an astronomical sum, which my employer asked me to write them a check back for that exact amount and THEN they would give me my real check. Even my current employer (during a prior position) made an error - HR forgot to put in that my new co-workers and I had finished training and were due a raise. We had to wait for the next pay period for it.

Yes, there could be some resentment, or it could have just been human error. I would be on them on Monday, for sure.

I would wait until Monday with expectation that I would be paid that day. In the meantime, I would research my state's laws regarding this. The Department of Labor takes a dim view of complaints regarding non payment of wages. I would be prepared to make a complaint if this not resolved.

this-and i would go ahead and call your labor board today to find out what recourse you have. it may actually be better to file a phone complaint with them today even if your check is ready to pick up on Monday. years ago i had an employer pull this on me-the labor board not only got my back wages for me, but as a fine they made the employer pay me what had been my normal daily wages for every single day from the date the law mandated i should have been provided my check up until the employer actually provided me the check (and showed the labor board signed proof i had received it). if i remember right i ended up with about 2 full weeks of extra pay.

I would never burn a bridge in the job world until I had no other choice.

(This is my opinion on what you should do)
Wait until Monday, if it doesn't appear than contact them.
Tell them that you'll be happy to come pick up your check - this way you definitely have it.
If they refuse than you can start pushing the envelope a little more in regards to getting your paycheck (I sure hope it doesn't come to that for you).

Good luck - I sincerely hope everything works out well for you :wizard:

Thank you all for the suggestions. Im going to call the labor board today and file a complaint. I'm just lucky the school I currently work at pays me on the same day I expected the other check or I would literally have 0$. Also its not like this is a small amount of money from the previous company, with the vacation time in there it should be around 600$.

If the owner won't be back til Monday, and the owner signs payroll checks, there's nothing to be done this week, as the other person told the OP. It's a mistake to call the Labor Board or anyone else today. Geez. Contact the owner or her assistant about this matter first thing Monday and give them time to respond. It should all work out. OP -- the owner may know someone who could be helpful to you in your future work. Don't burn your bridges by giving the owner a negative impression of yourself. Be. Patient. !!!

I also would wait until Monday. If nothing happens after a reasonable amount of time and it's clear they are stiffing you, you could file a small claims case.

Completely agree with this.

What is it with our culture today and immediately jumping to needing to report somebody instead of waiting patiently over the weekend to resolve it. No one can make a mistake without someone getting even.

I get being out of $$ and needing a paycheck. But putting away a few bucks for a rainy day (on any budget) would help one take personal responsibility when an unexpected emergency comes up.

I agree completely. I once had an interpreter that we hired occasionally. He submitted his bill one day after the deadline for items to go to payroll, so he didn't get paid when he thought he was. He called me and I explained this and that the check was to be cut the next week. He reported us to the Labor Department for nonpayment of wages. It was the last time I used him to translate

Not sure having to wait 2 days is worth filing a complaint with the Labor Board about. Especially since it sounds like this is a small operation if the owner has to issue the check and the owner isn't around.

Why did you even bother to ask if you weren't willing to take the very good advice that the other posters gave you? Not waiting until Monday is very foolish.

raising a stink over this is completely absurd. You will be black listed from ever being employed at that location ever again. Also, the world we live in is quite small, word will get around that your behavior is bordering on beligerent. The boss explained it was an oversight. These things happen. We are all human. It was explained that the issue will be resolved. Certainly, it is not ideal, and the forgetfullness displays a lack of professionalism, but honestly, complaining to the labor board tops that by a million miles!

Forgive and move on about it.

Your last day was August 28 and they are just getting around to doing that week's payroll now? What kind of payroll schedule is that? You should have been cut a check by the owner on your last day.
