Did I pay too much for bedding?

Today I just bought my first set of real bedding. I usually just buy "Bed in a Bag," but while at Macy's, I saw some bedding I really liked. It is by Style & Co. and I bought everything I needed (2 std pillow shams, 2 king pillow shams, comforter cover, cal king sheet set and quilt). It totaled $381.53. But it was on sale and I saved $252.91.

Wow! I think what I paid is pretty pricey, I can't imagine spending $630 - - -for sheets?

I have not opened any of them because I'm debating if I want to keep them.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

It would be too much for me but I'm a cheapskate. I think if I were a millionaire I would still be clipping coupons and shopping sales. If your feeling unsure because of the cost maybe you can keep the shams and comforter and get some less expensive coordinating solid sheets? Another thing to consider is the thread count of the sheets you purchased. If they are a super high thread count (600 or more) I would say that would justify the cost but if they are anything less I would probably take them back. I'm sure they are beautiful though. If you love it and can afford it then I say go for it!

About 9 years ago I decided I wanted to have a bed and breakfast bed. Dh had given me a large sum of $$ for our anniversary for furniture. So I went and bought everything I wanted. Down Comforter, duvet, european pillows w/shams, throw pillows, etc. I ended up spending $1000. I still have it all and i still love it and it still looks new. 9 years divided by what I spent is nothing. I know if I hadn't gotten high end stuff I wouldn't have any of it today.

A heavy weight very soft brown and yellow quilt with huge wear spots that I got when g-pa died.

Guess I think its wonderful you could afford such a wonderful bed.

If you love it, and you got it on sale....go for it. Really good sheets last for a long time, so it's not like you will be replacing them soon. I like high thread count sheets....well sorta high....400 thread count sateen sheet set (yes I know that they go up over 1000) .....for 42.00 at Smartbargains.com & two 300 tc for 32.00 at the same place. Love that store!!!

I spend alot on bedding and thats alot even for me.

I just got bedding, quilt, sheets, valances the whole deal for DH and myself and DS from JC Penneys and it was $330.00 for all of us.

But hey if you like it and can afford it, keep it.

Sheets are expensive. But, there is no better feeling than collapsing into bed when exhausted and feeling like a princess. There is a difference between cheap bedding and expensive bedding. You love it, obviously you had the money to spend on it. So, enjoy the feeling of being at a fine hotel in your own bedroom!

If it is high quality (thread count etc.) then I don't think that is outrageous....considering you have everything including shams and comforter, I think you did pretty well. If you love it and can afford it, I say keep it.

I just bought a nice new bedding set and it set me back about $620. So your deal sounds amazing!!

I bought a 600 thread count sheet set from Costco: $68.00
Bed Skirt $40.00
Euro Sham $30.00
New quilt and matching pillows, shams etc: $480 (pottery barn)

I just wanted to get exactly what I wanted. My husband wasnt to happy but he got over it. I save on everything else, just wanted to treat myself.

If you love it and can afford it I say go for it. I don't spend a whole lot on bedding because we have pets and some of them refuse to sleep on the floor. I wake up, shoo him off and he sneaks up like a Ninja as soon as I'm snoring again. As a result my bedding stays covered with a sheet that can be easily replaced when it gets furry and washed.

I love comfy sheets but I buy mine at a Wamsutta outlet near my home. I LOVE outlets.

sounds too high to me....but that's me! I'm a sheets snob...I buy from the wamsutta outlet nearby,from the mix and match bins about 400 thread count(necessity) with pillowcases for about 20-30 a set....they are pure softness and comfort!
My point is you CAN spend this much on super comfort for sheets,but you can also get it for WAY less
I'm thinking of buying some from the local fair today,they're selling a king set of 400 thread count cotton for $30- and my other 2 sets are getting worn,I've had them for years
bedspreads? buy one you LOVE,they don't really wear out if they're well made.....

Is it something that you will use for years or something you will tire of and want to replace soon? If you get tired of things in a couple of years and would need to replace it, I would think twice. If it is something you will use for several years, it makes more sense to keep it. Is the comforter dry clean only?

Personally, I buy less expensive things so I can change them out more often.

If you put it on credit or will be giving up something else, I would think about it a little more also. There are less expensive alternatives available.
Only you know what kind of budget you have and what you can afford to spend more than anyone else.

I stumbled on this around 5 years ago. At that time you could buy irregulars, from different places around the US, you need to call the different stores. The ladies in the different stores were very helpful they would tell you what was wrong with the items. Anywho, we purchased a croscill comforter for $99 that was $500 in the stores I really liked it, and I still love it. On the inside of the comforter there was a single faint white dotted line where maybe the material should have been sewn or cut about 9 inches long. No one but me knows it is there. I really really had to look for the flaw. It was set shipping, 16.99 ish per each shipping. We got the matching bedskirt, sheets and we even got the matching shower curtain, I remember the curtain was $99 in the store and less than $25 shipped to us, its flaw was at the very bottom of one corner, the material was folded and sewn over itself for around 3 inches, my mom picked the seem out and viola perfect. PS I lucked out, my mom made the room curtains, which of course I used a coupon to purchase the matching material. Croscill info is for DIS friends.

Now for OP if I could easily afford the bedding and I loved it, yes I would keep it. It sounds like it will last.

1) I can easily afford it, but I'm a very frugal person. That's why I'm torn. Even if I can afford something, I don't want to buy it if I think it's too expensive for what it is. I don't mind spending a lot of money I something if I believe the craftsmanship is there...For ex, I bought my whole bedroom set at Ethan Allen - it is beautiful Every piece is so well made. It wil last a lifetime. They also kick in free delivery and a free home decorator expert. It was exspensive, but well worth it. I have never regretted it.

2) But here, to me sheets are just sheets. These are very pretty sheets, but they are still just sheets. They are egyptian cotton, which I know is good, but still, just a 250 thread count.

3) Other problem, though, even though they sound expensive (to me anyway), I got them on a good sale.

4) I think what I'm going to do is go to Target today and see what I can find. If I find something I like, way less expensive, then I'll return the Macy's sheets and keep the Target.

5) I have such a hard time spending money on luxuries for myself. Do you find yourself doing that too?

6) I also keep thinking how $382 would get me anywhere from one or two nights at a deluxe to up to a week at a Value hotel at WDW.

I am about as cheap as they come, and I don't think that it is too expensive. I have a very hard time finding bedding so when I do find something I like, I go for it. I would rather pay for something I really love than get something cheap that I want to replace in six months.

Looks like you think like me. If you have a Ross in your area, they carry some pretty things also. It's kinda hit or miss but if you are not in a hurry, just keep your eyes open. Anytime anything is more than $100, I give it a lot of thought before I buy it.

I have learned through experience to buy my furniture at Haverty's after shopping all the bargain places. I spend days looking at the good sales and then end up at Haverty's after all. Some times it is better to pay more for things that will be around awhile. I don't buy new furniture until I need it, not just because I want it.

I had an aunt that rebought everything every 2 years and I am talking about nice things. She was a Dr's wife so I quess she felt she could. She would have a big yard sale every couple of years and get rid of everything.

I have a battle with myself anytime I feel like I am being extravagant with something for me. I quess I have been on Dave Ramsey and Suze Orman and all the frugal websites too much lately.
