A month ago I booked a packaged vacation from the disney site. It was a quick decision with not very much thought. I had a budget and it fit. Since Im here looking around for more knowledge I fell into the dvc-rental forums. I did some quick math with limited knowledge. It's really too late to change my plans. But can I bounce my logic around in here to see if Im thinking clearly.

If I was able to rent the points needed to stay at AKL-savahanna for 5 nights for 70 points @ $13 per point
add 5day tickets for 2 add my airfare from Southwest. I came up with the following number

910 - dvc rental
670 - tickets
508 - airfare
------------
2088.

I was unable to find what the dining plan would cost per day but am I on the right track or did I miss a bunch of extras??
be gentle on me, Im learning as I go.

Booking a DVC room through Disney will always be more expensive than renting.

You will pay airfare either way so don't include it in your numbers. You can buy tickets from an authorized ticket broker at a discount. The DDP cost changes yearly.

The regular dining plan is around $60 per person per day for 10 and older and around $20 ages 3-9
The counter service dining plan is around $42 pp/day 10 and older and around $16 ages 3-9
This is for 2015 and if you rent points you have to rent with someone who will add dining plan for you (I could be mistaken but don't think the one big point broker does)
Also in case you hadn't read this previously in your research often DVC rentals are non refundable and often not able to have dates moved once booked (unlike booling direct with disney) and your best chance of avail is to book prior to the 7 month window opening if you are looking to travel in the fall (high DVC time)

So my thoughts and math are correct. Lesson learned for my next trip. Kinda feel a bit stupid now considering where I am staying and what I'm paying.
with thr info CMNJ just added. its a even trade on price points. oh well live and learn
CUE up Homer Simpson and a big old DOH!!

Keep in mind that DVC also doesn't work well for "last minute" travel. At one or 2 months out you'll likely only find something at SSR. During holidays and anytime in the fall, most people are booked 7+ months in advance. And with renting, there's not much flexibility for change.

...and there are typically no changes (and most times refunds) allowed on a DVC point rental agreement so you need to be absolutely certain. The transaction is 100% between you & the owner. WDW will not get involved or talk to you about it at all. If something goes south you are on your own as it is at your own risk. Your DME & DDP will be arranged by the owner & they will provide confirmation numbers for you to link.

I would check out the "What you need to know" thread before assuming this is the best route fr you.

Since you are going in June, no you didn't make a mistake. It isn't likely you would have found a rental for June at VAKL in June for sequential nights. You need to plan ahead for DVC.

Also note that a DVC room is a queen bed and pull out couch. If that makes a difference.

I agree...you did not make a "mistake"...you just acquired more knowledge for next time:flower3:.

Like the others have said, a DVC rental can save you money, but the trade off is that you have to book a non-refundable, non-changeable room at least 7 months in advance and pay in full at the time of booking. This is a huge deterrent for some folks. You also have zero control over the reservation and you must rely on an individual to take care of adding your dining plan, room requests and DME information. As an owner, I am usually planning out our trips 12-15 months in advance so that I can make our reservations when my 11-month home resort window opens. This fall, I am taking a non-DVC trip to WDW with my mother and it seems strange (and nerve-wracking!) to wait until the end of April/beginning of May for discounts to show up. I've never booked airfare before booking a room:crazy:.

Just to make you feel better, OP...in 2001, before I had heard of the DVC, I thought we were getting a great deal when I booked my then-boyfriend (now DH:flower3:), myself and my parents in a 2BR at OKW. I paid FULL RACK RATE:scared1: and thought is was a steal at $429/night for 7 nights:sad2:. Live and learn:teeth:.
