There is a group of people here at work responsible for preparing written reports which the clerks then type in. Well, they've been messing up their written reports and so management decided to show them what it's like when they mess up by having them walk a mile in our shoes. I was picked to teach them how to use the software and I figured that was the reason they were doing it....wasn't told directly. I mentioned it to the other two clerks and they expressed a concern that they wouldn't have work to do and since I'm sort of closer to management than they are (not in position, but I just associate more with them and I am given more management type jobs to do) I went to my direct manager and told her there was a concern. She thanked me, basically said that the reason I thought they were doing it is the reason they are doing it, and went and explained it to the other clerks. Did I do the right thing in discussing their concern with her? I feel like I showed leadership ability, but not sure.

You did a good thing, they did not have to be worrying about if their jobs were in danger!

That's what I figured....but one of them is giving me a major attitude (the one who was here before I came to work here.)

Personally, I don't think you needed to go to your boss for something like that. Sometimes co workers like to discuss things without managment being invloved. I doubt they'll confide anything in you again in the near future.

I agree...they may not trust you again.

I am a big believer in cross training. Knowing how/why someone does something that affects my job helps me do my job more efficently. Learning how someone does something doesn't mean they are a screw up. Even so, it's up to management to explain to them. You're not a boss and you might find they will start resenting you and not confiding in you. They might even think you're looking to get them into trouble in order to make yourself stand out.

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

By telling your boss what your co workers confided in you, you have created a rift with them.

I guess I can see your points, but I work more closely with the management than with the other clerks (we don't even sit in the same place....they sit in the back of the office...I sit closer to the front where the management is) so I guess it's more important to please the management than to please the other clerks and the clerks will get over it while management will remember that I helped them out.

They could also see it as you kissing *** and tattling on your coworkers to advance your career.

Wow I took the opposite spin on this one! I saw it as looking out for co-workers and wanting to calm them that there positions were not in jeopardy. In this market I would want the reassurance that my job was not in jeopardy and I would want that reassurance from management.

Just because you sit near the managers doesn't make you one. You are a clerk just like the "others". ::yes::

I'd be keeping my eyes and ears open. Management often says what they want you to hear.

The reason they want to teach them to type in their own reports may be just what they said, or maybe they want them to type in their own reports...permanently.

I think your co-workers have a valid concern. You might just be teaching yourself out of a job.

ita Peachgirl.

It is a difficult position, but Manager's are very rarely in a position to say "well sure, we have to cut $85k in Salaries next year and Data Entry Clerks are gonna have to go."
so they beat around the bush a little and say "Cross Training is good."

I don't blame your co-workers for being concerned and I doubt your Leadership attempt did anything to make them feel better.

Believe me, with my typing speed as compared to the other clerks and the reviewers (I type 19,000 ksph) I would be the last to go. They're also training me to do several of the management functions that none of the other clerks do and both today and tomorrow they told the other clerks to come in 2 to 4 hours later than usual but they're having me come in at the regular time. The main reason I did it was because my coworkers weren't listening to me when I told them they weren't going to lose their jobs but I will admit that I felt good when I was praised for telling my direct manager.

WOW! I must be getting old!! We used to do wpm (words per minute) I was 65 wpm way back when. Lord only knows what I would be in ksph!!

Well golly that's all fine and dandy what your doing but remember this, one thing higher up's can't stand is a kiss ***. They can't stand it when coworkers tattletale on other coworkers.
I don't care if you shine their shoes and kiss the ground they walk on if you continue doing what your doing I guarantee you it will bite you on the backside before you know it.

Many people have played your game by thinking they're gonna get in good with their boss, but in reality they were digging their own grave within the company.

Ever since the IBM punchcards in the 60's, 70's and 80's (and it's carried over in today's world with PCs), data entry is measured in KPH (Keystrokes Per Hour). If you typed 65 wpm back then, chances are your KPH would probably be around 11K - 15K, just above minimum.

In today's world, most companies want at least 10K for a DEO. (That's about 55wpm) The really coveted ones can do anywhere from 14K to 19K - which is around maybe 80-85 wpm.

When I worked a temp job last year, I was in the 18-21K range and could fly. My tested WPM at the temp service was 93. Honeywolfe is right about her keystrokes being above average and she should be proud of that.

As far as whatever else is going on in her work-world, kiss-ups rise to the top in this corporate world. I've seen way too many unqualified people in management positions to think otherwise.
