Did husbands and wives in the 50/60's really sleep in seperate beds?

Growing up my parents slept in one bed that was actually TWO. It was two separate twin type beds anchored together at the base??? :confused3 They did manage to have 5 kids.

Now fastforward, they have two homes one in Maine (summer) and they sleep in the same queen size bed. In the winter they are in Florida where they sleep in the same room in twin beds. :confused3

Seems odd thinking about the different sleep situations they have between the two homes. They are 79 and 80 years old.

Both sets of my Grandparents had seperate bedrooms & beds.

Several sets of my parents friends also sleep in separate beds & most in separate rooms. Mostly due to snoring, one because the couple can't agree on a single mattress that they both find comfortable....

Did you ever notice in "I Love Lucy" that Lucy and Ricky slept in the same bed until she got pregnant? Then they got twin beds ..... hmmmm :rolleyes1

My parents were married in 1959 and slept in the same bed until my dad passed away 3 years ago. :teeth:

However, my grandparents did have twin beds. DH's parents had separate bedrooms but still managed to have 4 kids. :teeth: They have a pretty big house.

However, I don't care that DH snores like a freight train--he's staying in my room and we're not sleeping in twin beds. I can't sleep without the noise anymore. When DH had a conference out of town, DD ended up sleeping in my room (she's 15) because she said with DH gone and it being so quiet, "I can hear all the burglars." :lmao:

My grandparents slept in seperate beds; my mother says when she was a kid you could hear them fighting over pillows, covers, & space. :rotfl:

Really, do you think there would be half of us here if they all really slept in seperate beds? I think it something some couples do as they get older b/c other things become less important.

My Granny and Grandpa had seperate bedrooms. We didn't give it a second thought.

It was for television-they couldn't show a man and woman in the same bed. Mike and Carol Brady were one of the first couples shown sleeping in the same bed.

Useless piece of trivia

The Munsters were the first non cartoon TV couple to be shown sharing the same bed. :cheer2:

Exactly.

When my parents were first married, the average person only had the choice between a twin (single) or full (double) bed. Most hotels nowadays have queen beds, which are bigger than doubles.

We have a king bed now, so DH and I sleep together; we had a full when we first married. I think if that was our only option now, we would be sleeping in twin beds, also. Trust me, after 30 years together, having a good night's sleep has become more important than cuddling all night.

One set of my grandparents slept in different rooms. They didn't like each other much.

My parents had twin beds. Never thought anything about it. They would be the equivalent of most Dis readers grandparents.

My grandparents did.

as did mine. And they slept in separate beds for their 40 years of marriage too ( not just in the 50's/60's)

You know how the media influences our culture, I wonder if people in the 50's/60's thought it was normal to have seperate beds because that's what they saw on TV all the time? :confused3

My husband's grandmother slept in the same bed with her husband, but I don't think that means much.

For example, when the whole Monica Lewinsky thing was going on, we had to explain to her what they were talking about...and she couldn't believe anyone would EVER do something like that! :rolleyes1

My parents slept in seperate twin beds and yet they somehow managed to have 4 kids :rotfl: . My dad was a big guy and my mom just liked having her own space. King beds weren't very common back then.

I think you nailed it. None of my parents or grands slept separate from their spouses, and they all had double, or full-size, beds. King mattresses were nearly un-heard of back then, and a queen was just about as rare. My in-laws made their own King bed, by pushing two twins together. That way they each had their own space and didn't wake each other with getting up to the bathroom or moving in the bed, but they could still sleep together.

My parents and grandparents all slept in separate rooms from their spouses. I don't really know why except they just preferred it that way.

i was born in 1961 and my parents had been married about 18 years before i came along-they always slept in the same bed. i remember my mom being thrilled when king sized beds became more affordable-before that they shared a double bed.

look it up.

I did, and I'm sorry to say that you're wrong.

Mary Kay and Johnny was a sitcom in 1947 on the Dumont network. They shared a bed.

In addition, Ozzie and Harriet shared a bed in the fifties. (The reference I've sited doesn't mention it, but dozens of TV books do.)

The reason? These two couples were married in real life. The censors, therefore, didn't mind it.

Two master suites-It's the wave of the future. people need their space-even from a spouse.
