Did anyone major in something completely useless in college?

When I went to University I took Film Studies...which means I watched Casablanca 27 times in 2 years...

Then I went to college and took photography and been working ever since.

BS in Geography

What makes it useless is I really wanted to be a CS major but couldn't do the math/physics, so I settled for a major that was intresting at the time. After graduating I ran back to a Computer type job.

I have a friend who majored in theater and is working in animal control. :teeth: And I used to date a guy whose sister majored in German.

SmilingMouse, I'm jealous! Those are the degrees I originally wanted!

I started out majoring in filmmaking - which would have been a waste of time because I really didn't have the talent.

But I switched fairly early on to fine arts, and have always made my living creating art in some capacity or another.

I think you really have to study what you love, otherwise its totally useless.

Sonya,

Thanks for the reply;) I had no idea someone else wanted to major in French and Anthro:jester: :smooth:

We're a rare bread, so we have to stick together!!!!!

Danacara - WOW! - were you at Township or Borough?? :p: I never knew another DISer lived so locally! I sometimes take kids I babysit to the children's reading room in the basement at the Borough one. When I get my master's degree, I wish I could work in one of the libraries ... if it paid something! :)

Back to topic here ....... it seems that most people have turned out OK with their "useless" degrees! :)

I majored in political science.

Since college, I've worked in the carpet industry.

Never used it in my job,but has been rewarding in my hobby/crafting/creative side.;)

If you have a frivolous major at an ivy league college, does it work out being more useful than a frivolous major from a state school? Just wondering how it works?:D Or do you feel worse, because you spent more money on the education?

and urged my dd not to pursue a frivolous major. To instead take it as a minor, and take as many fun classes as you want, even if it adds an extra semester to grad time. I see college as preparing to earn a living. There is a certain element of exploring yourself and your interests but in the end as you make those student loan payments you want a job. I have alot of friends who work at fast food type places, wait tables, and clothing stores with degrees in psychology.
It's a bit of a peeve of mine that advisors don't talk about the employment possibilities of certain degrees. It does matter. If you are pursuing a field that is related to that frivolous seeming degree then they need to work with you. Get you lots of hands on experience in that field. Help you create a portfolio if applicable. And they should tell every psych major that without grad school the degree is pretty useless.
I have a highschool son who wants to surf for a living. I am encouraging him to find a way to make surfing pay. Or perhaps to take a year off to try surfing as a living (although this really makes me nervous)Or to take classes during the off competition season.
Tiggeroo ducks cause she knows lots of disers disagree with her. But I'm just trying to be a good parent.
