Did anybody see the Granddugger baby birth show?

It was a 90 minute special on TLC last night.

I heard they had a home birth. I was suprised at how it came about. (For those that didn't see, their dr was out of town and Anna didn't feel comfortable around another dr.) My dr always has a back-up for when he's out (even unexpectly) and has his patients meet the back-up dr during their pregnancies. So, I'm suprised she never meet another dr while pregnany. Unless she did meet one and didn't care for him/her.:confused3

Anyhow, people who have home births plan well in advance and generally have at least a midwife present. They just had their doula. I don't believe doula's have medical schooling. I kept thinking they are so lucky everything went ok. So many complications could have arisen, cord around neck, bleeding, breathing, etc. And they had no doctor or midwife to help.

I also found it interesting that Michele was in TX flew back to help, but Anna's Mom did not. I wonder how long it will take Jimbob to recover from purchasing 2 last minute airplane tickets, plus a TAXI ride. Maybe he was able to haggle with them.:rotfl:

Before she had the kid, she went to a big flee market to shop. She bought 2 used car seats. I didn't think it was legal to buy used car seats.

I wish the new family much happiness.

I don't think it was a flea market. I think it was a consignment type shop. Did you notice the number of people outside the door waiting to go in? That seemed more of an event instead of a flea market. Almost like the consignment shop was having a huge advertised sale or something. I do agree that while the other stuff is no problem buying used, I would never buy a used car seat. That's just me though.

I didn't see the birth show. I watched part of the first show but didn't realize it was continuing later. I'm sure TLC will blanket us with re-runs though.:goodvibes

I did notice that at one point when Anna was speaking directly to the camera she called her MIL "Mrs. Duggar". I thought it was odd that she wouldn't call her mom or by her first name or something. Seemed odd to me, but what do I know. :confused3

I found it interesting.

I do think the Doula was also a midwife--as they failed to mention. Articles published prior to the show stated they had a midwife present--but I never once saw her and very rarely would the Doula be doing all the "set up" and prep for it.

There are "black market" midwives who are not suppposed to do homebirths, but do. But then they would not have televised this if this was the case in Arkansas IMHO. (There are states where homebirthing is illegal--hence the....hush hush midwives.)

Homebirths can be perfectly safe as pregnancy and childbirth in and of itself isn't a medical event. I do not choose them for myself for a multitude of reasons, but I have known several women who have done this safely and successfully.

However around here they require notice and hiring a specific midwive who does the homebirths to the tune of a few thousand dollars.

I was rather surprised at how this all came about.

They probably had not planned on going 10 days early.

As for the Duggars--they are frugal--not cheap. There is a difference. To them, there is no value in buying brand new when they don't have to. But attending a birth that occurred much earlier than expected. There is much value in that hence their cash purchase of only 2 airline tickets.

As for MIL--I was afraid to call my MIL mom for years. Just a conversation we have never had. lol! I do call her mom now--but now I realize she is cool with that.

As for the "flea market"--it was one of those huge consignment sales. We have those here once per year. I've never been--but they are HUGE. I wouldn't buy used car seats either--but it is not illegal to sell them as long as they have not been recalled. No you cannot tell if they were in a collision--which is why I don't buy them used. But they are not illegal to sell. I did have a collision with car seats and opted to toss them. I dissambled them, sliced the belts and marked all over it in permanent marker so that soneoen wouldn't dumpster dive for it.

Forgot to mention, didn't Anna's sisters look so "modern"? They had cute haircuts and wore make-up. They were still "modest". Looks like they have a bit more "modern" lifestyle.;)

(As for "flea market", does the word really matter? It was some sort of sale of used items. Call "it" whatever you like.)

It doesn't matter exept in how you used it and as though it were some how wrong of them to shop that sale. Flea markets often have a negative connotation.

Yes--I thought the sisters looked cute.

I recall that Anna HATES to wear makeup. They made her wear it for her wedding and she went along with it--but didn't care for it much.

I enjoyed the show and was surprised to see it aired so soon after the baby was born. I couldn't get over how modern Anna's sisters were, and their kids too! They are beautiful women.
I thought the baby shower was lovely.
I was touched by the story to see how young and "green" Josh and Anna are and thought back to my days of being newly married and so young with a baby. Ok, I feel old now!
I wish Josh and Anna all the best and am very happy for them!

well.....I've been with dh for almost 22 yrs, and I don't call his mother mom! I do call her by her first name, or by "mawmaw" which is what my kids call her. But she will never be mom!

I like the show but was a little surprised by a few things.

I call my mil by her first name. I thought it was odd that she called her Mrs.

The phone call where Josh told Jim Bob they were thinking of a home birth was kind of funny. The silence on the other end of the phone was telling.

Where was that girl's mother? I have posted this before and been mildly flamed but I think the Duggars have full control and are kind of pushing her family aside. Really I did not want my inlaws at my kids births. They actually showed up with Tim Horton's and sat down like they were going to stay...umm NO!

She was uncomfortable with a different doctor but not a room filled with a film crew....really????

I actually really like the Duggars..really I do but this episode was just strange....although I really liked the baby shower game with the diaper. Wish I knew someone to through a baby shower for.

i would never choose my personal comfort level over my baby's safety, but i'm relieved the home birth went well for them and wish them all the best. the duggars seem like nice, down-to-earth people.

I don't think Anna's family has a lot of money.

During the part where they were waiting for her at the airport, I thought she mentioned about they weren't sure whether or not her mom was able to come (as in not be able to get a plane ticket :confused3).

Who a woman has at the birth of her children is her business. I don't see the Duggar's as controlling at all in that regarde.

As for the camera crew --- they don't look at her va jay jay.

My OB is solo practice and while he does have a back up when he is out of town, it is not customary to meet with the back up at all during prenatal care.

Not sure if Dr. Sarver's practice is that way, but it would make sense to me that if she was a solo practice then there would be no reason for her patients to meet with the back up.

I could see with her modesty on why she would be uncomfortable with a new doc whom she hasn't met. In the end, if she needed one I am sure she would have dealt with it fine.

I know folks are focused on home birth safety--but they are very safe when done correctly. I'm just shocked that they could turn around and make that decision so quickly.

I never met my OB's back up, luckily I didn't need to use him!

My cousin's wife still calls my aunt Mrs. XYZ and my cousin and his wife have been married almost 25 years! I admit I do get a kick out of that.

:lovestrucCongrats Josh and Anna!:lovestruc

I was most surprised by the handing around of the baby to the film crew right after she was born:eek: Germs and newborn babies...not a good combo.:confused3

Actually I thought that was sweet! :lovestruc I am sure they all washed up before they held her so it will be fine.

It did strike me as very "green" to decide to have a home birth spur-of-the-moment. It is a very teenager-ish decision so I very glad it all turned out well. I did chuckle at Jim Bob's response to Josh saying they were thinking of a home birth..."Um well, pray on it"!

My OB had a solo practice, too. She was an on-call at the hospital and her "back-ups" were the other on-calls. There were 3 others.

I did meet them-- as I had gallbladder issues and had a few stays in L&D for attacks-- and I liked all but one. I would have left and gone to another hospital before I would have let her deliver my baby. So I can definitely see where Anna was coming from.

That said...I absolutely do NOT understand home births. My labor was horrible, though. If I'd lived before the medical knowledge they have now I would have died in childbirth. Sooo... I'm pretty fond of the hospitals. :rotfl:

Jim Bob's reaction made me laugh too....the silence when Josh said they were thinking about a homebirth said it all, but it was nice that he didn't give him a lecture and trusted them to make the right decision for their family.

I never did see a midwife, only remember Josh saying they called their doula and asked her if she would be okay if they did a homebirth. It looked like someone brought medical supplies, they were wearing gloves when they cut the cord and they used a medical tool (not Fiskars scissors, lol) to cut it.

I wish they would have mentioned a midwife if there was one there. Unassisted homebirths (not having anyone trained to deliver babies there) are becoming more popular, and that can be risky for Mom and baby.

I thought the show was wonderful! Although I took some things a little differently then some of you. As for the decision of a home birth- when his dad asked if he had called the hospital, he didn't make any mention of the Dr. being out of town and they didn't show him calling the office or hospital all he said was we're thinking of a home birth.
He also said they had "talked about it for hours" yet at that time she had only been in labor a short time, also they had to have asked the lady to be their doula before that morning...anyway I took it as they decided before Anna went into labor, to have a home birth. And not as a last minute choice. I'm surprised no one has complained about Josh weighing the baby like a sack of apples! ;)
I don't really know a lot about home births so I'm curious- do they have to go to the hospital anyway after the birth??? What would they do with the placenta at home, throw it in the trash? If someon can fill me in, I'd appreciate it! Thanks

I've seen those scales used before in episodes of A Baby Story featuring home births. I think the doula had to have also been a midwife to have had all the supplies that she did (unless Josh and Anna had them, which I doubt). I enjoyed the episode. I loved Michelle's big smile when she got to Josh and Anna's and saw that things really were happening. And of course I teared up when little Mackynzie was born.

I did laugh at Jim Bob's pause on the phone though. I loved the idea of a home birth myself, but I was told not to try it with my first baby because you never know how your body works as far as labor and delivery go until you've tested it out once. It turned out that mine doesn't labor at all without pitocin, so I've always had my babies in the hospital.

I do use a used car seat, but one of my closest friends gave it to me and I knew its history completely. Otherwise, I wouldn't have either.

Some people eat it......seriously.

I would never dream of calling my MIL "Mom". She's not my mother and she sure doesn't treat me like her daughter.;)

And, I didn't meet my OB's back-up any of the three times I delivered and she wasn't there. It was awkward, but we all got over that rather quickly.

I don't believe there is any kind of law against using a previously owned car seat. They are just trying to use their money wisely -- nothing wrong with that.

I was amazed at how calm she was through the birth (well what little we saw of it). My first birth was without any meds (not by choice, labor was just too fast:scared1: ) and I was screaming like a lunatic in the hospital. I thought she showed great control. And I really never noticed the name Anna called her MIL. My dad was the only one alive out of the 4 parents when DH and I met, so we never had to deal with how to address the MIL's. DH called my dad by his first name and it worked well for them. I also cannot imagine anyone at the birth besides DH but I know it works for some people. I like the idea of a home birth, but I loved my epidural I had the second time around:rotfl2:
